The Alpha Mafia King -
Chapter 34
After sitting with them for about ten minutes, agent Fox was sure that Alyona had not recognized him. He believed now that she was an amnesiac patient just left to roam free. He watched her smiling multiple times as they conversed and listened to her beautiful innocuous laughter in between his funny jokes.
Agent Fox stood when Taleela had drunk her wine to the last drop and said, “Alright, so I should give you the space you need to get to know each other. Hey, bro, break a leg!”
“Thanks, man,” Jamie replied.
Jamie leaned into the Devil’s outstretched arms! Agent Fox slipped the bottle of arsenic into the man’s coat pocket. He patted Jamie on the shoulders with a confident smile.
“Have fun,” he whispered, and Jamie nodded.
Agent Fox briskly strolled out from the Casino, knowing fully well that in thirty minutes to an hour, what would happen to Miss Alyona. Her central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) would slow down. She would experience a cardiovascular system shutdown, and lastly, death, which would occur within the hour.
“Are you alright, miss Taleela?” Jamie asked with a feeling of concern.
“Why, of course!” Taleela responded, and Jamie let out a sigh of relief. He turned to look for agent Fox and caught him observing them from afar. Just then, Alonso materialized in front of them. He glared at Jamie, and Jamie forced a nervous smile.
“Hey, Don Alonso, how’s it going?” Jamie said, fidgeting with the bottle of arsenic in his coat.
“Jamie,” Alonso said tersely and added, “move.”
Taleela realized that she had been sitting down with the spy all along. She gritted her teeth at the man as he scampered to his feet like God had just commanded him to move.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know that-“
“No need to apologize; it’s not your fault!” Alonso said, cutting off her sentence. “I shouldn’t have let you out of my sight. What did he want?”
“Nothing, he just wanted to talk and share a drink with me,” Taleela answered. A growl almost escaped from Alonso, but he held it in his throat.
“What was he talking to you about?”
“Nothing, he just thought I was adorable, so he offered to buy me a drink.”
Alonso could hear the growling almost escaping, but once again, he gathered enough control to keep it at bay.
“Let’s go to my suite,” he said.
“You looked pissed,” Taleela said, worried about the look on Alonso’s face. “Come on; we only shared one drink.”
“Don’t accept drinks from strangers next time; what if it’s poisoned?” Alonso said sharply.
Jamie corked his head down as they walked past him. He had heard their discussion, and he thanked the moon goddess that he had not fallen victim as Fox bait.
Callisto would have been pleased to hear that Taleela was dead. He had only saved her because he wanted to save himself. He had new information to share with Laslow, but he was still making deliberations. Someone wished Taleela dead but also tried to do it lowkey. It would displease Callisto greatly that he helped Taleela survive.
Jamie could still pick up the agent’s faint scent. His advantage over the assassin was that he was a werewolf. Jamie was capable of picking up feelings. That said, he also had another advantage that helped him tonight.
They said arsenic has no color, taste, or smell, but Jamie had worked with the deadliest assassin of all time, his boss, Callisto.
Callisto was a specialist in poisoning as he was with his guns. Over time, Jamie’s nose had developed an acute reaction to the poison, and he could pick up the non-existent smell of arsenic.
Something was not right; the agent hunches told him. Alyona had not displayed any signs of acute poisoning, and now he watched her leave with Alonso, and the bodyguard followed closely. He still had not known that Jamie had switched the drinks right back after Taleela had her first sip.
Something was wrong, terribly wrong! The agent thought. He clutched his chest. Everything he was expecting to happen to Aliyona was happening to him. Agent Fox realized that at some point, the drinks had to have been swapped again.
His eyes were permanently fixed on Taleela, leaving his suspect to be Jamie, who had made the switch. He fished in the deep pockets of his coat for the injection. He injected himself, putting a chemical called a chelating agent into his bloodstream. The chelating agent combines with a toxin to help absorb the arsenic from his body.
The gun was tucked into the agent’s boot. He could barely reach for it before the couples disappeared. He had another use for the weapon, though. Ultimately, his plan to kill Taleela tonight had gone through a turnaround, but definitely, he was going to kill the one who had helped her life.
Outside, agent Fox had been waiting in his car for Jamie to come out from the casino. Snow had covered the hood of his car, and it was so cold that his breath was shaky. Jamie was now in his full view, and the agent took careful aim at him.
He lodged four bullets into the man’s posterior region and sped off. Jamie was bleeding on the pavement as he clutched his stomach. Jamie took off in a different direction before the crowd could gather around to identify him.
Laslow tracked Jamie into the cold street and found him fully recovered and alone. He had witnessed the shooting, and he thought the shooter was one of Alonso’s men.
“What the hell happened?” Laslow said as his steps receded.
“Someone shot at me,” Jamie replied.
“One of Alonso’s men?”
“No,” Jamie said. Taking a deep breath, he pulled out the bottle of arsenic. “It was someone else. You know what this is, right?”
“Arsenic, where did you get that?” Laslow said, trying to make the connection. Jamie helped him out and explained everything that had happened.
“Someone else wants Taleela dead,” Jamie said.
Laslow beat his hand frustratingly in the air and said, “You just f****d up a perfect opportunity to eliminate the target!”
“I had to,” Jamie defended. “I was going to be used as bait, and I am not ready to sacrifice myself for anyone.”
Laslow walked away in a fit of rage, then he suddenly stopped abruptly and turned.
“Find out who the shooter is!” he barked.
“Oh, I have plans for him, alright!” Jamie barked back. He followed Laslow behind, and they made their way to his apartment.
Meanwhile, Jerald, who had been tracking Jamie for weeks, watched both men and decided he had heard enough. He decided to report his replaceings with Alonso.
Taleela watched the snow falling out of the window of the enormous bedroom suite. She was sitting on the fluffy king-size bed.
“Wow, it’s so beautiful!” she remarked.
“Yeah, it is,” said Alonso. “Hey, Taleela, have you been able to remember anything since we came to Russia?”
“No,” she said. She was lying, and Alonso could tell because of how her heart skipped a beat. The phone rang, and he rolled over to answer it. It was Jerald.
“Speak,” said Alonso.
“Someone might have attempted to murder Taleela tonight! I overheard Jamie telling that to another man. Apparently, the man was the shooter at the casino.”
“Alright, I know what to do!” Alonso said, climbing out of bed. He was going to review the footage of the man that was with Taleela and Jamie earlier on.
Earlier, Alonso had gone through the security footage after the series of gunshots. The camera could not pick up the shooter’s identity, mainly because of the angle he had parked and taken the shots from.
Alonso also did not see the shot victim, but he suspected that it was Jamie because of how swift he had moved. Any normal human being would have fallen to the ground after taking a round of four bullets, even if he managed to get a few feets away.
“Hey babe, what’s wrong?” Taleela asked as Alonso slipped on his slippers hurriedly.
“Nothing, just make sure you lock the door behind me!” Alonso said, heading out for the admin’s office.
He cursed silently as he moved. They had not even spent up to twenty-four hours in Russia, and things were already getting heated up. He swore to punish whoever wanted Taleela dead when he found out just who that person was.
Alonso barged into the office, surprised to see his grandfather watching the same video he was here to examine.
“You already know?” Alonso asked.
“I suspected there was foul play with these men, but go ahead and tell me what you know.”
“Jerald just reported to me the most bizarre thing; he said that Jamie might have helped save the life of Taleela tonight.”
They watched it and saw Jamie swapping two glasses of drinks back and forth as the video progressed to rewinding and moving forward again.
“Fetch Jamie; it’s time we had a word with him!” Mazza said, his eyes turning yellow.
