The Alpha Weredragon's Favorite -
CHAPTER 43
Ryan Brittany trailed me all the way to my office. That was fine. We needed to have a chat that was long overdue.
I sat in my office chair while she perched on the edge of my desk, leaning forward to give me an ample view of her cleavage. I quickly stood and crossed my arms over my chest.
I used to replace Brittany irresistible. She came to my pack when her mate rejected her. It was lust at first sight. We'd spend hours tangled in the sheets, bodies intertwined as passion consumed us. I couldn't get enough of her curves, the way she moved against me, the breathy moans that escaped her lips...
Once upon a time, that was the case. The mere idea of spending time with her any time soon made my skin crawl. It wasn't entirely her doing, though. She remained the same.
It was me who had changed.
And it was all because of Lyra. From the moment I first saw her again, she captivated me in a way no one else ever had. It wasn't just her beauty, though she was undeniably gorgeous. No, it was her strength, her courage, the way she stood up to me and challenged me at every turn.
Even her saucy mouth-how she fired off retorts and refused to back down-drew me in, made me crave her presence, her touch, her everything. Taking over her training wasn't about making her suffer after all. It was to allow me to see the best of her in action.
Brittany could never compare. She was all surface, no substance. But Lyra? She had depths I longed to explore, a fire within her that ignited something inside me. I knew I was falling for her, hard and fast, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
"Ryan," Brittany purred, batting her lashes as she moved closer. "I've been thinking... We would make a powerful pair, you and I. The Alpha and his Luna."
Brittany continued, her voice taking on a smug tone as she spoke about the Luna trials. "I've already secured my Second, you know. She's a fierce fighter who knows all the latest combat moves. Together we'll be unstoppable." She paused, waiting for me to react, but I merely grunted in response.
Undeterred, she went on, "And I had my eye on Professor Harbringer for my scholar. I mean, who wouldn't want him on their team? He's brilliant, and his knowledge of the trials is unparalleled." Brittany's bottom lip poked out for a second before she sighed dramatically as if the world was conspiring against her. "Unfortunately, he promised himself to another she-wolf." She tilted her head, trying to play coy, but I could see the calculating look in her eyes. "Are you jealous I asked him instead of you?" she purred.
I met her gaze, refusing to rise to the bait. "Jealousy is a waste of time, Brittany. I have more important things to worry about than who's on your team for the trials."
She pouted, clearly disappointed that she hadn't been able to provoke a reaction from me. But I wasn't going to give her the satisfaction she thought she deserved. Brittany huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Fine. Suit yourself. But don't say I didn't offer you the chance to be a part of my team."
"That would be a gross conflict, don't you think?"
She smiled and wagged a finger at me. "We all know that the Alpha helps his favored contestant behind the scenes. It may be frowned upon but it's not against the rules."
I merely grunted again. Brittany could scheme and plot all she wanted, but she would have to leave me out of it. Regardless who participated, if they didn't fight for me, they weren't worthy of being my Luna. Including Lyra. I needed someone by my side who would help me tear down Vivian and Gregory once and for all. I needed someone who, if I fell, would carry on the fight.
Brittany plucked a speck of lint from my shirt, straightening out the material of my tee. I tried to suppress a flinch. "Ryan...why don't you drop by my cabin later? I had plans to perform at the bar, but I could always reschedule_"
I stepped back, putting distance between us. "Brittany, unless you win the Luna trials, I'm not interested."
Her lips curled into a sneer. "So, you do like her? That Lyra?"
I simply held her gaze, saying nothing.
She backtracked, changing tactics to play the seductress.
"Ryan," she pouted, revealing even more of her tits with the flick of a button. "Don't tell me you're trying to get into that frigid virgin's pants. Lyra wouldn't know how to handle a man like you."
My eyes widened. Lyra, a virgin? In the wolf world, even true mates rarely came to each other untouched. I had assumed she'd had lovers, given her age and beauty. But this knowledge, it both shocked and pleased me in a primal way. The thought of being her first, of showing her the heights of pleasure...
I shook my head, dispelling the tantalizing images. "My personal life is none of your concern, Brittany. What I do care about is your behavior. I've been told that you were the one who spread it about campus that Lyra didn't have a wolf. That was unacceptable."
Brittany scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Oh please, Ryan. She's just some pathetic wannabe wolf who doesn't belong here. She's not even one of us!" She moved closer, trailing a finger down my chest. "But you and me? We're the real deal. Imagine the power we could wield together."
I grabbed her wrist, stopping her in her tracks. "Enough, Brittany. I'm not interested in your games or your power plays. And I won't tolerate you bullying Lyra any longer."
She yanked her hand away, glaring at me with a mixture of hurt and anger. "Why do you care so much about her? She's nothing! Just a weak, pathetic excuse for a wolf."
I clenched my jaw, fighting back the urge to lash out. "Lyra is a member of this pack, and as such, she deserves to be treated with respect. If you can't handle that, then perhaps you don't belong here."
Brittany's eyes widened, and for a moment, I thought she might actually back down. But then her expression hardened. She jutted out her chin, eyes flashing, "You're making a mistake, Ryan. You'll see. When the Luna trials come, I'll prove to everyone that I'm the only one worthy of being your mate."
As she stormed off, I exhaled a deep breath. I needed answers concerning Lyra, and I had a clear idea of where to begin my search - the Cells, home to the captive from the Wolfsong pack. He'd remained mute so far...
It was high time for that to change.
As I headed there, Conner interrupted my strides with an urgent mind-link that needed attention. His voice was strained and hurried, and I could sense the tension in his words.
"So much is going on, Alpha, but as a rogue seeking refuge, I'm being watched every moment. As soon as I can, I'll try to tell you everything."
The link severed before I could respond, leaving me with a sense of unease. What had Conner uncovered? And why was he being watched so closely? Did it have something to do with Lyra?
