The Alpha's Exchanged Mate -
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 61
Author’s POV…
It has been more like what he has been going through as he assumed the position as the Beta just became amplified. How could he begin to phantom how to come up with solutions for each of the problems that had been started.
Now he was before his desk, caught up in his thoughts, trying so hard to think that the trial would be tomorrow, and there was nothing worse than being unprepared.
He glared at his screen for the umpteenth time and still hadn’t figured out what to do. Then he heard a knock on the door which made him almost kick start from his chair, and he knew whoever was at the door just saved him from being buried in his thoughts. It was crazy to be immense and locked up in a prison of your thoughts. He headed towards the door and opened it. A part of him was hoping and praying it would be Ramona. Maybe another office s*x would set his mind straight or confuse him the more.
He headed for the door, and as soon as he opened it, he sighed because it was Becca. She held a cup of coffee on a tray. How did she know this was exactly what he needed?
She always had some sort of superpower to read through his mind and innermost thoughts.
She was glaring at him, and that was when he noticed that, in the heat of his thought, he had unbuttoned his shirt and was not wearing any singlet.
“Sorry,” he apologized with a smirk.
“Show off,” she muttered as she stepped into the room and he smiled at her before buttoning up his shirt. He went back to his desk, and she walked and dropped his cup of coffee at his desk.
She sat opposite him.
“How have you been? I know it has been overwhelming for you,” she asked with a sincere look of genuine care on her face.
“I have lately been overwhelmed by despair, it’s been a lot for me and I can’t help but wonder if I am cut out for this position,” he mumbled.
“Of course you are. Don’t you ever doubt that you know?” She almost cut him mid-statement.
“I know you would always say that. You always see the best in me.”
“That’s because you are the best,” she said and almost bit her tongue as soon as the statement came out. She didn’t want to sound too clingy and overly. That was just way too much. She thought to herself. Then disguising all she had said with an uproar of awkward laughter. At first, he gazed at her and soon decided to join her in the laughter.
“So how is preparation for Luna Sonia’s case? You know you would be doing the bulk of the work tomorrow, being the Beta.”
“Yes, I know that. I am trying to comply with all the case files and do a case study. I need to be conversant with it,”
She nodded her head.
“But between you and I, do you think that Sonia deserves a second chance?” She asked him.
“Well,” he said and paused, taking a cup of the coffee she had brought for him. It tasted so sweet. She had mastered how he liked it and always made it exactly that way.
“Well,” he repeated, “everyone deserves a second chance, but I am just bothered that her being set free will do more harm than good. There will be a lot of chaos; you know she doesn’t know yet that Edwina is now the new Luna, and coupled with the fact that she is pregnant,”
“Yes, true, and I think the Alpha is happier with Edwina than he ever was with Sonia, despite the fact they have their issues,” Becca mentioned to him.
“Yet despite that, I prefer Edwina for the Alpha than Sonia,” he said sincerely, and Becca nodded in agreement. There was then an awkward silence in the room, but Caleb faced back to his laptop, crunching some of the keys.
Becca glared at him. She always did that with that a kind of intensity when she wanted to ask him something but didn’t know how to go about it.
“So what about you and Ramona?” She finally gathered all the courage to ask him and quickly blurted it out.
“Well, Ramona and I have been cool. Things have been going so smooth,”
Not the answer she was expecting, she frowned because she knew Caleb well enough to know that whenever he gave that kind of answer, it was mostly. After all, there was more, and he was trying to spare some details.
“Is that all?” She asked, knowing the very moment she asked that she was ultimately going to regret it.
“Can I trust you with something?” He asked her, and all her being wanted to say no, she knew she was going to regret saying yes, but her curious side kicked in.
“Yes, of course. What is it?” She asked.
“Ramona and I had s*x,” his last line echoed in her ears about a million times. She knew there was no way she was going to get over such painful words.
“Really?” She asked with a feigned smile on her face. She was trying so hard not to seem so angry and jealous, but it was so hard.
“What happened after that?” She asked, hoping it wouldn’t be any talk about relationship.
“I don’t know, we haven’t talked after that, but I am hoping we will soon take it to the next level. I think that we will make a perfect match.” He muttered with a smile on his face.
Becca knew she couldn’t take it anymore.
She stood up, “I think so too. I have to go, have a pile of work, just wanted to drop by,” she said, almost rushing out immediately.
“Becca,” he called out her name, and she paused at the door.
“Thank you for the coffee, you are the best,” he said and winked, trying to reference her own words. She nodded, hastily opened the door, exited, and went directly to her bed to soak its pillows with her tears.
