The Alpha's Exchanged Mate -
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 85
Authors POV…
Jared nodded as he held the phone to his ears closely, his eyes darting back and forth, watching out for anyone who might listen in on his conversation. A message could have been sent instead of a call, but it was urgent, and he couldn’t hold back.
“Do not let that happen, ensure my child is safe and I don’t care how you do that.” The voice on the other line barked.
“Of course. Trust me, my Lord.” Jared responded, getting off the phone.
He left the secluded corner before straightening out his cloth, then he cleared his throat as he began patrolling the prison yard. He had been assigned to the prison to work as one of the pack guards because of his swiftness, he worked under close scrutiny at first, but when the coast became clear, and he’d earned their trust, he was later allowed to roam about freely. Today was one of those days he felt grateful to be able to pay back his debt.
Before becoming a guard, he had been a notorious swindler from the Gamma clan, and everyone knew Jared as one who would shed his wolf skin for money. It’s not a deniable fact; he had the skills, but he just wasn’t too keen on it anymore.
He had gotten himself entangled in a shady deal with some wolves in sizzlers pack, and the alpha got to know about it. His punishment was to be disowned by the whole pack.
However, the then Beta, Benedict, saw him differently, and because he was in a close-knitted relationship with the alpha, he had been pardoned. To keep him checked, he had been assigned to work at the correctional institution of the pack. He had promised Ben his life for this.
They both worked together during the attack of the sizzlers on the night howlers. He had also stood by Ben when he needed to escape prison. His loyalty to Ben was from the depth of his heart. He did the shady deals most wolves were scared to do on their behalf at hefty prices.
One of such deals is the one John Sinclair brought to him; he had been ordered to poison the ex-luna. Knowing he would not do so due to his allegiance with Ben, he didn’t refuse the job to prevent the desperate man from going to someone else.
On getting to the prison, he had called Ben immediately to inform him of the situation of things. And just as he expected, he wouldn’t carry out the job. Instead, he needed to warn Sonia about taking anything from anyone if she loved herself.
Making his way towards the cells, he moved with caution to avoid any suspicion. Sonia had been kept in a more secluded room due to her attachment with the Luna and, most importantly, her present condition. The room had a comfortable bed and chair to ease her back pain. Edwina had outdone herself to ensure her sister got a minimal measure of comfort in this awful situation.
Whispering into the ears of the one guarding her room, they shared whispers for a split second before the latter walked away.
Sonia recoiled into the bed when she sighted him; she knew immediately that he worked for Ben.
“What did you say to the guard?” She questioned, her wolf standing on guard as they both sensed danger.
Jared couldn’t help the small smile that danced on his lips. “You should take a moment to appreciate me since I am meant to take your life but I wouldn’t.”
“Did Ben send you here to kill me? Because I refused to come with him?”
“It’s obvious you do not know the father of your unborn child well enough if you think he means any harm.”
Still giving him a suspicious look, Sonia relaxed her muscles. “what are you here for then?”
“To deliver your father’s message. He ordered me to kill you.”
Sonia gasped, “that’s a joke, right? What makes you think I would believe anything you say to me? You who turned his back against his alpha and betrayed his own pack. You can rot in hell for all I care.”
Jared sighed, acting bored. He knew it would come to that and had taken the initiative to make a recording of his conversation with John.
Sonia’s eyes shone at the voice of her father. To make her believe him, Jared retrieved the packet he got from his pocket and showed it to her.
“If my father sent you to murder me, why are you telling me all of this then?” She asked calmly with her mind in turmoil. She folded her arms over her belly, protectively promising herself to fight tooth and nail for her child.
“I came to repay the favor beta Ben did for me. I just came to warn you to be careful of whatever you take from anyone. Have it at the back of your mind that someone wants you dead.”
With that being said, Jared walked away just in time before the former guard returned.
Sonia sank deeper into the bed, tears rolling down her face. Her father had totally gone wild if he wanted her dead to cover his tracks.
Over the years, she forced herself to believe that her father didn’t mean any harm. He was just lonely and depressed like she became years later. It never occurred to her that the man she had looked up to all her life intended to kill her.
He couldn’t even reverse such deadly thoughts for the sake of the innocent child.
Sonia wrapped her hands tightly around herself as the tears poured out continuously. She pitied her child so much and felt guilty for bringing it into her messed-up world. Her world was gloomy, and she felt alone and wished she had someone to talk to.
Something struck her mind as she cried bitterly. Only one person did love her and stood by her even when she didn’t deserve it. Edwina, her sister, would come to her aid.
