The Apple of My Eye
Chapter 1494 The Camera Is Broken

Charles frowned slightly and ignored Melissa's words. He passed Melissa and went to the children's bedroom. When he saw the door ajar, he peeked inside and saw that the children were already out of bed. Clark was helping Shirley put her clothes on.

"Good morning, Dad!" Clark greeted Charles with a smile when he saw his dad walk in.

"Dad! I had a nightmare last night. I dreamed of a monster..." Shirley started saying with fear in her eyes. She had just woken up, so her voice was hoarse. The first thing she wanted to do after having that nightmare was tell her dear father about it.

Charles tapped on their heads slightly and said with a wide smile, "Look at you! My clever children already know how to get up on their own. Good boy! Good girl! Especially you, Clark. You've learned to help your sister put on her clothes now."

"No, we didn't wake up on our own. Mom came and woke us up a while back, or we will still be sleeping now," Shirley said as she rubbed her sleepy eyes. She wasn't happy about getting up so early. 'Sheryl woke the kids up?' Charles thought, 'Where is she now? I didn't see her come this way.'

He turned around quickly and walked out the room. He needed to talk to Sheryl. He wanted to know if she was still mad at him.

Just as he was walking down the stairs, he saw Nancy coming up. When Nancy saw Charles, she greeted him with a gentle smile on her face, "Good morning, sir. Your breakfast is ready and is already served at the table. Sher asked me to help the children put on their clothes. She was worried that they might not be willing to get out of bed so-"

"Did you see Sher just now?" Charles interrupted Nancy.

"Yes, I saw her only a few moments back. She didn't have her breakfast. She said that she's got something to deal with at the office, so she left early," Nancy replied.

"Oh. All right," Charles said, frustrated. 'I didn't think that she would leave in such a hurry. She didn't even wait to have breakfast with me. I was right. She is still angry with me, and that's why she is avoiding me, Charles thought to himself bitterly.

Charles was actually far from the truth. Sheryl had only left early because she had some urgent business to attend to. She didn't want to wake Charles up, so she went away silently.

Nancy went upstairs to take care of the children and Charles went to the dining hall to have breakfast. He sat down and started to eat. While he was eating, he remembered that he had a meeting that morning. He was silently planning to go to Sheryl's company after the meeting to explain about the misunderstanding the night before when Melissa walked to the table.

"Mother, please sit down and have some breakfast," Charles said.

Although Melissa had done a lot of things which dissatisfied him, she was still his mother. That was something he could never change; he could only force himself to endure her. 'The tolerance I'm showing towards her is my filial piety,' he thought to himself. He could do nothing about the sour relationship between Melissa and Sheryl. It was what it was.

Melissa walked towards him and looked at him with concern. "Don't be so worried. That woman is very good at taking care of herself. It's useless to be worried about her," Melissa said calmly. She poured herself a cup of coffee and took a sip.

Charles didn't care about anything she said. He knew that Melissa was bad-mouthing Sheryl on purpose. Instead of responding, he continued to read the newspaper in his hand. Melissa threw a quick glance at Charles and saw that Charles was ignoring her completely. She was pissed off.

'What spell did that witch use on him? Why is it that whatever I say seems like utter nonsense to him? A thousand words from me doesn't even compare to a single word from her!' Melissa thought to herself angrily.

Melissa's face was filled with rage and all sorts of emotions, but she didn't notice the distortion in her expression because she was lost in her thoughts. But Charles saw her expression clearly and knew what she was thinking. He ignored her and remained silent on purpose.

"Charles, about what happened last night, that was all Sheryl's fault, but she never admitted it," Melissa started talking to Charles again, "She didn't apologize to you, and even thought that it was all your fault. How ridiculous is that? She had the guts to avoid you this morning and left without saying a word to anyone. Her attitude is even worse now. And you don't blame her for anything!" Melissa glared at him, trying to prove that she was only protecting her son from an evil woman.

"Blame her?" Charles finally responded. He raised his head from the newspaper and looked at Melissa coldly. "Mother, can you stop this farce already? I am married to Sheryl. We've two kids, for God's sake! And she loves us dearly. What else do you want from her? Why do you keep torturing her? Why are you insisting on parting us? Even if you don't like Sheryl, she is still the mother of my children. She gave birth to your grandson and granddaughter. Can you please be more tolerant of her for our children's sake?"

Charles had been waiting for so long to speak those words out loud to his mother. If Melissa hadn't pushed him so far that day, he wouldn't have said all that in his anger.

The things Melissa had done right after she had gotten out of prison, especially the things she had done to Sheryl, was very disappointing to him.

Melissa was so shocked by his words that she wasn't able to say anything for a while. She didn't think that Charles would see her as an unreasonable woman who always created a rift between him and his wife. 'I did everything for his own good and for the future of the Lu family. But now, he is blaming me for everything, ' Melissa thought.

Melissa felt a chill travel through her body. She was so disappointed by her son and his naive attitude. She didn't want to say anything more, but after a while, her fury rose again. 'Why should I be afraid of that bitch who came out of nowhere?' she fumed, 'I am the Mistress of the Lu family. Who the hell is she? She is nothing. She came from some ditch. I won't be beaten by a bitch like that. Charles is lost within Sheryl's web of lies. If I give up now, the Lu family will be under her control soon.

I will not let that happen. Never!'

She sneered and said, "Charles, I know that I say too much, but that's only because you just don't listen. One day, you will understand. You will understand who is right."

"I hope so," Charles said without any emotion in his words. He stood up from his seat and walked away.

Melissa bit her lips and looked in his direction with a raging fire in her eyes. She cursed Sheryl a thousand times.

In Sheryl's office, Sheryl was suddenly hit by a train of sneezes.

Phoebe came into the room and heard her sneezing continuously. She laughed and said, "Mrs. Lu, did you catch a cold or are you being cursed secretly?"

"I'm pretty sure that someone is trying to curse me to death," Sheryl said with a smirk.

'And there's no one other than my sweet mother-in-law who would do that," Sheryl thought to herself grimly.

Phoebe thought that Sheryl was just kidding, so she let it go and began with the report, "Mrs. Lu, you have two client appointments today. You have to talk about the details regarding the contract. And in the afternoon, you have a meeting."

"All right. By the way, Phoebe, did you get the surveillance footage?" asked Sheryl.

Phoebe shook her head and said, "I'm afraid not. I went to the real estate management office. They said that the camera had been broken for a while. So, we can't identify the person who damaged your car." "Broken? How did the camera break? Is it just a coincidence that it was broken at that exact time?" Sheryl asked. It was hard for her to believe.

Phoebe didn't believe it was a coincidence either. "Yes, I have my doubts about it too. I asked the staff about the details and the time when the camera was broken. They said that it was around the same time your car was damaged."

"What about any suspicious cars or people going in and out of the building? Did you check on that?" Sheryl asked, trying to figure out some other clues.

Phoebe hesitated for a moment and said, "The staff said that there were too many people and cars that had come in that day. The data is too large for them to narrow down in a short period of time."

After hearing Phoebe's words, Sheryl sneered. 'I already have an idea about how this is going to turn out. It looks like we need to completely reorganize the people of this building,' she thought to herself.
