The Apple of My Eye -
Chapter 1498 It Wasn't An Accident
"Ms. Xia, is Lancy insane? How could she do that to you? She even cursed our company. What a crazy woman!" Phoebe said disdainfully.
Sheryl, however, seemed to be lost in thought. She replied calmly, "I don't think she's crazy. In fact, I think she's very well-prepared. I wonder who else she's working with because whoever it is, well, they did a good job. Their plan is going very well. They must be planning their next step now."
Phoebe was startled to hear this so she asked, worried, "Ms. Xia, are you saying that this wasn't an accident? And that Lancy is an accomplice? Oh my God, do we have an enemy that we don't know of? Why would someone do such a thing to frame us?"
Sheryl remained silent. A woman's name came to her mind. Since she had come back, trouble seemed to follow Sheryl everywhere.
"Phoebe, you've had a long day. Why don't you go home and rest? I'll take care of this. You don't need to worry, okay?" Sheryl said gently.
After such a long day, Phoebe was already starting to feel tired. Her back was aching too so she didn't bother to decline. "Okay, Ms. Xia. Don't stay up too late. You need to get home and rest too." "Yes, I know. Bye, Phoebe." Sheryl nodded at Phoebe.
As soon as she saw Phoebe get inside a cab, she took her phone out and dialed a number.
"I need you help investigate someone. I need all background information on her and replace out if she's been meeting with a woman named Rachel."
"No problem, just send me an email about her name and information."
"Okay."
Sheryl hung up and opened her business email. She found the contract Lancy had signed with the company before. In the contract was her resume which contained her name, phone number, education background, etc. Sheryl sent the resume.
Sheryl remained worried as she thought it over. Lancy looked and sounded determined back in the hospital. And she was confident that the Cloud Advertising Company would get a very bad reputation after the accident in the mall.
Something like this had already happened before. Based on that, as long as the mall didn't demand anything from the company, the contract could remain valid so it normally shouldn't be a big deal. This was why Sheryl was so worried about how certain Lancy was that this accident would destroy the Cloud Advertising Company.
Sheryl racked her brain for Lancy's possible motive. She concluded that Lancy might go public with her face injury. If Lancy was acting alone, Sheryl wondered how much trouble Lancy could really get her into. So, Sheryl called the chief editor of the largest magizine in Y City.
"Hi, Peterson, sorry to bother you so late in the night," Sheryl said politely.
When Peterson responded, his voice sounded welcoming. "No trouble at all, Mrs. Lu. What's up? Did something happen?"
Sheryl had met Peterson through Charles in one of the dinner parties that she went to. So, Peterson, a big shot in the entertainment industry, was the first name to come to Sheryl's mind.
"Yes, Peterson. I wonder if you can help me out?"
"My pleasure. Tell me what happened. Let's see what I can do for you," Peterson said without hesitating.
Sheryl was relieved. She continued, "Here's the thing..."
Sheryl told Peterson every detail about the accident in the shopping mall and all about Lancy. Sheryl expressed her concern about Lancy's threats and she wondered if she was up to something else bigger. Unlike Sheryl, Peterson was pretty calm after he heard the whole story. He remained silent for a moment.
Sheryl's anxious grew when Peterson wasn't saying anything. She broke the silence. "Peterson, based on your experience, what are the odds of our company losing this case?"
Peterson sighed before answering, "Mrs. Lu, I'm going to be honest with you because we're friends. I think your company's in quite a big trouble this time."
Sheryl's heart tightened as she heard this. She pressed, "What do you mean?"
"I didn't know that your company was involved in the accident in the JR Shopping Mall. Just this afternoon, the board of directors told us to play up the accident and put the companies involved in a bad light. We were told to say that your company was more concerned with its own interests than the well-being of its employees and that all you valued was money."
"How come?" Sheryl was dumbfounded.
This had already happened before, but it wasn't dealt like this then. What made this time different?
Besides, this was just an accident. How come the Cloud Advertising Company was suddenly involved now? There was nothing wrong with the company's management.
So many things were racing through Sheryl's mind. She didn't know what to do, and that drove her crazy.
"Peterson, what should I do? It isn't that serious, is it?" Sheryl asked anxiously.
"I hate to say this, but it is. I'm sorry, Mrs. Lu. You have to prepare yourselves. Schedule a press conference too. Does Mr. Lu know about this? He might know what to do. He has a lot of connections. I'm sure he'll come up with something way better than what I can offer you."
Peterson made Sheryl realize how deep in trouble she really was. Sheryl thanked Peterson and hung up.
Sheryl sat in her seat, lost in thought.
She wondered whether it was an appropriate time to ask for Charles' help.
She only had one night. The news was coming out the next day, and she didn't know if the Cloud Advertising Company would be on the front page of every newspaper and magazine by the time she woke up. Sheryl founded the Cloud Advertising Company with Isla. Sheryl would never allow someone to ruin it.
Sheryl sped up her car because she wanted to get home right away.
After Peterson hung up, he called Charles.
Charles was tucking the children in. He instantly put his cell phone on silent mode when he got the call and left the bedroom quietly.
"Hello?" Charles answered the phone when he was out in the hallway.
"Mr. Lu, it's Peterson. Am I disturbing you?" Peterson asked politely.
"No, Mr. Yang. What's up? Are you calling because you can't sleep and you want to spend the night with me?" Charles teased Peterson.
Peterson chuckled before he answered, "Mr. Lu, has Mrs. Lu discussed with you about her company's issues?"
Charles was perplexed. Sheryl wasn't home yet. 'Did something bad happen to Sheryl?' Charles was worried.
"Mr. Yang, please tell me what you know. Sher isn't home yet."
"Oh, okay. Mrs. Lu called me just now and told me about..."
"About what?" Charles interrupted Peterson anxiously.
