The Apple of My Eye -
Chapter 1504 Another Person’s Life
Sheryl hesitated for a moment.
Just as she guessed before, Lancy had a troubled past and it concerned another person.
She took a deep breath to calm down and told herself to not get too excited because she was so close to replaceing out the truth. If she could figure out Lancy and her troubled past, it might just help her.
Sheryl finally made up her mind. "You're so brave for willing to give up your own life for someone else's. I admire you so much, but isn't there a way to help the both of you?"
Lancy burst into laughter. "It's always easier said than done. You have no idea what I've done for him. I spent my entire life trying to save him, but they told me that there was no hope anymore. He's not going to survive. Can you imagine how I felt? How could they decide on a human life just like that? I can't take it. I just can't..."
She repeated it in a voice that only she herself could hear, and the expression on her face could make anyone believe that she was going to die. But the next second, her eyes came to life again and she fixed her eyes at Sheryl, saying bitterly, "It's all your fault. You and your kind are responsible for all of these. You got so much money in your pocket, but you refused to just take a little of that to help him when he was still getting treated and it wasn't too late yet. If you'd only helped him, he wouldn't have wasted time and he probably would've survived!"
Sheryl held her breath, afraid to trigger her.
Sheryl had figured that the man Lancy was talking about was probably just a few breaths away from dying and Lancy had been the one to take the burden throughout the man's illness. But she just couldn't agree with the idea that she would murder another person just so she could save her partner.
"I don't think he's going to be very happy if he replaces out that you want to kill an innocent woman just to save his life." Sheryl chose her words very carefully.
Lancy's pupils dilated, when she spoke. She raised her voice and said, "Yes, he won't. He's such a nice person, the nicest I've ever known. You won't understand how much he means to me, and how much we love each other. I can't live without him. Oh, I can't!"
By then, Sheryl had already learned the whole story. Lancy's boyfriend was sick, but they couldn't afford the treatment, and he was dying now. Someone asked her to set Sheryl up in exchange for her boyfriend's treatment. Since she didn't succeed, her boyfriend wouldn't get the treatment. She was now choosing to die rather than have to live without her boyfriend.
Sheryl then realized how much Lancy hated her and this world. She racked her brain trying to come up with an idea to save her life. She also wondered who was behind all this, and who asked Lancy to frame her in the first place.
She was at the ends of her wits and getting more and more anxious. Suddenly, she heard Phoebe looking for her.
"Ms. Xia! Ms. Xia! Show this video to her!"
Sheryl turned to look at Phoebe, who was waving a phone at her a few steps away.
'Does Phoebe have something that can help me out?' she wondered.
"Don't move! I don't want you playing any tricks on me. Your life is in my hands now," Lancy threatened.
She'd already embraced death as if it was right there in front of her so nothing frightened her anymore.
"Lancy, it's me. Thank you for all the things you've done for me. I'm a lucky man to have you, and I'm sorry to put you through this. I know there isn't much time left for me. I'm not scared of going to another world, but I can't just leave like that because of you.
Look, you've suffered so much for me, and I hope you can live a peaceful, happy life when I leave. Meet someone, get married and have kids with him. Then I can rest in peace. Please promise me you will, and this is my last wish in this world..."
Lancy widened her eyes in disbelief. She hurriedly turned around and found that it was Phoebe playing a video. There was a man talking, and it was her Jarvis. She took a deep breath and tears were welling up in her eyes.
"Lancy, don't do anything stupid. Just let it go. Everything will be fine if you let go. I'll always be with you," Jarvis said on the video.
"Don't listen to them, Jarvis. Things aren't as they seem. I didn't do anything stupid, and I'm doing my best to save you. Please don't get mad at me!" Lancy cried. She needed to clarify things.
Jarvis was a gentle and decent man. Back when they were still young, Jarvis would get mad at her if she did something wrong and refused to take responsibility for it. One time, he didn't talk to her for half a month.
If there was anything in this world that mattered to her more than life itself, it was Jarvis' judgment. She couldn't stand going a day without seeing him and talking to him. It would kill her if he left this world mad at her.
Lancy reached out her hand absentmindedly to touch the phone as if it was Jarvis' face. She wanted to feel his warmth and wanted him to hold her in his arms.
However, Phoebe snatched her phone away.
"Lancy, if you let Ms. Xia go, I'll give this to you," Phoebe bargained. Her voice was trembling despite her best efforts to stay calm. She was glad that she had done just as Charles asked her to do. Charles called her earlier and told her his plan. He asked her to cooperate with him so they could set Sheryl free.
Phoebe trusted him. She followed as he told her so they could save Sheryl. It seemed as if their plan was working.
"No, I don't believe you. It must be fake. How could you know Jarvis? You're lying. I'm not stupid! I don't believe you!" Lancy shouted. She wouldn't jump at the bait and her instincts were telling her that something was off. She knew that she needed to be careful in dealing with these kinds of people. If she made one wrong move, she might lose her chance to save Jarvis.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Xia. You don't have any other choice but to jump with me. No one can stop me! Let's go!" Lancy said sharply, and her eyes were determined. She gritted her teeth as she dragged Sheryl to jump with her.
"Wait!" Sheryl shouted. Lancy was taken aback so she paused.
Everything seemed to stop at that moment. Phoebe was holding her breath, her heart practically jumping out of her chest.
Sheryl gripped Lancy tightly and looked at her face which was wet with tears.
"Since this is really what you want to do, why don't you finish the video at least? It's his last wish. The least you could do is hear it." Sheryl spoke slowly, afraid to set Lancy off. This was her last hope. Lancy hesitated. She quickly glanced at the phone in Phoebe's hand.
Phoebe hurriedly played it and held it up so Lancy could see. On the screen, Jarvis was crying. "Lancy, this is my destiny. No one can do anything about it.
Just, just let it go. I..."
He was so coughing badly that he had to stop talking.
He was still coughing that a medical staff soon rushed in and put an oxygen inhaler on his face. However, just seconds after, it looked like he'd lost his consciousness.
"No, Jarvis! Wake up! Don't scare me like that!" Lancy shouted. Her eyes were bloodshot as if they were going to pop out any minute. She screamed and screamed, her grip on Sheryl tightening.
"Stop trying to trick me! I'm not buying it! Fuck off! Jarvis is safe and sound in the hospital. He's feeling better!" she said, her voice panicked. After a few moments, she started laughing. Her laugh was maniacal as if she found everything to be so crazy and unbelievable it was hilarious.
"You saw it with your own two eyes, Lancy. You know what to do. You know him better than any of us do," Sheryl said calmly. Sheryl feigned calmness because her life was on the line. She knew she had to be careful.
"No, no... Jarvis would never say that. He doesn't know what he's saying. He doesn't know the full story. He knows I'm trying to save his life. He wouldn't ever say something like that to me. He just won't..." Lancy murmured. She paused before speaking again, and this time she raised her voice. "Save it, Ms. Xia! He won't get the treatment he deserves as long as you're alive. This is all your fault! You should be dying! Not him! You need to die!"
Sheryl was unable to move. This woman was crazy. She'd lost her mind. Sheryl needed to come up with an idea before this insane woman could do anything.
Lancy guffawed as she dragged Sheryl with her. It seemed as if she had run out of patience and she had decided to just do what she had planned all along.
"Jarvis is dead!" a man shouted from behind them. The voice sounded familiar to Sheryl.
Lancy paused and automatically turned to where the voice had come from.
