The Apple of My Eye -
Chapter 1609 I Didn't Mean To Hurt You
Confused by Isla's words, Sheryl gaped at her as she wondered, 'I'm not sick, am I? Why should I be hospitalized?'
As Isla looked at Sheryl's befuddled facial expression, she already knew what the other was thinking. She couldn't help but sigh and ask, "Want to see your face? I have a mirror. The kids will never believe that you're alright once they see you like that. Your face is as white as a sheet!"
Isla's words served as a reminder to Sheryl. She didn't want her kids worrying about her. It was better for her to replace an excuse to stay away. Since she was already in the hospital, she might as well complete the admission procedure.
But on second thought, Sheryl realized that there was a snag. She asked Isla hesitantly, "But I'm well enough. Will the doctors still allow me to be admitted?"
"You fainted right after the blood transfusion! Do you think that the doctors will let you go in that state? Of course, not! If anything bad happened to you, they would take the blame. They will surely advise you to stay in the hospital!" Isla didn't think that Sheryl's concern was a problem at all.
Realizing that the plan might actually work, Sheryl didn't oppose her anymore and decided to listen to Isla this time.
At Dream Garden
Two women were busy in the master bedroom. Melissa was packing some clothes for Charles, while Leila was sorting out his hygiene products in the bathroom. This was the first time that Leila was inside Charles' bedroom.
Holding Charles' razor tightly, Leila became lost in her thoughts. After a while, she muttered, "Charles, I didn't mean to hurt you! I didn't know that you would show up at that time!" "Leila..." At that very moment, Melissa came in.
It was a good thing Leila came to herself instantly and pretended that everything was normal. However, the awkward expression on her face betrayed her. But still, luck was on her side. The expression was gone as fast as it had registered on her face. Melissa didn't see anything.
"Aunt Melissa, I've got everything ready. How about you?" Walking out of the bathroom, Leila raised her hand for Melissa to see the pack she was holding. Then she opened it so Melissa could check its contents.
"Good. I'm almost done. Now, let's go to the hospital," Melissa said. Then, they both walked downstairs.
As soon as Nancy caught sight of Melissa and Leila, she approached them. When the two had arrived home earlier, she saw them rush into Charles' bedroom. Now, she couldn't restrain herself from not getting worried, for she saw the two ladies carrying out Charles' personal effects.
"Mrs. Lu, is there a problem with Mr. Lu?" Nancy asked Melissa anxiously.
"What makes you say that, Nancy? Are you looking forward to the day that some misfortune happens to Charles?" Leila snapped harshly before Melissa could answer.
"Miss Zhang, what do you mean? I've been taking care of this family ever since Mr. Lu was a child! Of course, I would ask! How could you slander me?" Whatever accusations or excuses Leila threw at her, Nancy could accept all of them. Well, there was an exception. She wouldn't and couldn't be insulted for being disloyal.
"Enough shouting! Stop, both of you! Nancy, please prepare some porridge. I'll take some to the hospital for Charles," Melissa interceded. Since Nancy and Leila were going to start a fight, Melissa decided to send Nancy away with an excuse to stop them. She didn't even consider that Charles was in a coma, and would be unable to eat anything!
"Yes, Mrs. Lu. I'll go do it right now," Nancy responded immediately. Nancy didn't dare waste any time since it was something that Charles needed.
After Nancy left, Leila pulled Melissa to the side and asked maliciously, "Aunt Melissa, do you really trust Nancy?"
Looking at Leila, and then glancing at Nancy who was busy around the kitchen, Melissa decided that Nancy had won this round. Sighing, she said, "Leila, Nancy is harmless. She is an old nanny here in Dream Garden. Even though I don't like her, I have to admit that she is much more loyal to our family than Sheryl!"
After hearing Melissa's explanation, Leila didn't continue with what she was going to say. She knew that the more she grilled Melissa, the more chance there was that she would be exposed for her plans. "All right. I'm glad that Nancy is a good person. I'm just worried that Sheryl and Nancy will once again..." Noticing Melissa's body shuddered as Leila connected Sheryl's name to Nancy, Leila stopped. As an added dramatic effect, she covered her mouth and rounded her eyes. It was enough for Melissa to think of it as a slip of the tongue. Then immediately she added, "Aunt Melissa, forget what I said! I don't think that it would happen again anyway!"
"What were you trying to say?" Melissa asked seriously, getting more and more suspicious. She didn't want Leila to hide anything from her.
Pretending to be perplexed, Leila seemed to think. Finally, she leaned close and whispered something to Melissa.
As soon as Leila finished speaking, Melissa's face clouded over. Her eyes turned in Nancy's direction and glared while she was in deep thought. A few minutes passed by, and Nancy came out with a box of food. Melissa had composed herself and acted naturally.
"Mrs. Lu, it's done. Do you need me to accompany you to the hospital?" Nancy asked in concern.
Even though she didn't know what had happened, she could tell from their behavior that something was wrong with Charles.
"It's unnecessary. The doctor said that Charles couldn't eat anything from outside the hospital. We have to go now," Melissa said coldly. Then, she grabbed Leila's hand and left Dream Garden without taking Nancy's food.
Nancy was at a loss. She gaped at Melissa's back, feeling confused. Suddenly Leila looked back with a satisfied expression. Instantly, Nancy realized why Melissa had changed her attitude in a blink of an eye. Watching them leave, Nancy shook her head sighing. She only hoped that Melissa could see through Leila as soon as possible.
Since she was still worried, Nancy decided to call Sheryl to ask her for some information. She didn't know whether Sheryl knew something or not, but she had to try.
Meanwhile, Sheryl had just finished talking with Isla. She was about to call the kids when her cellphone suddenly rang.
After checking who the caller was, Sheryl answered the phone.
"Hello, Nancy. Why are you calling me?" Sheryl asked as soon as she answered. Even though Sheryl had moved out of Dream Garden, she still respected Nancy as usual. Not wasting any time, Nancy immediately asked her about Charles' condition.
At the mention of Charles' name, Sheryl's heart skipped a beat. She bit her lips, then answered, "Nancy, don't worry. He's alright. I'm at the hospital right now."
Because Sheryl didn't want Nancy to worry for Charles, she lied to her. She hoped to assuage her concerns.
"Is Mr. Lu really fine?" Nancy asked again, not totally convinced by Sheryl.
To cover her uneasiness, Sheryl let Isla talk to Nancy to back her up. In a loud voice, Isla replied with a positive answer.
Nancy breathed a sigh of relief after Isla guaranteed that Charles was fine.
"All right! I'm glad that you're all well," Nancy sighed. Then, she told Sheryl to take care of herself.
They continued talking for quite a while before they hung up. Sheryl felt that Nancy cared about her much more than Melissa did, even though Melissa was her mother-in-law, while Nancy wasn't part of the family.
There were many insights that Sheryl had about relationships. She thought that in a relationship, it didn't mean that you would gain more if you devoted more. There were really people in this world who would never be satisfied with you. Melissa was one of the best examples. And, you couldn't do anything about it.
After ending the call, Sheryl suddenly became silent.
Isla had gone out to get some water. So, she was surprised to replace Sheryl in a trance when she came back. Rushing towards Sheryl, Isla asked, "What happened? Is there any bad news concerning Charles?"
