The Apple of My Eye -
Chapter 1643 Extremely Nervous
Hearing what Phoebe just said, Josef laughed in distress and shook his head helplessly. "Why do you all think that I have a girlfriend?"
Josef's words made Phoebe feel more awkward than she had initially felt. She had admitted that she had preconceived notions of him and she really assumed that he had a girlfriend because of his appearance and charm.
Moreover, his words suggested that she was not the only one who had mistakenly assumed to know of his relationship status.
"I believe Isla has told you a lot about me already, as much as I have heard about you from my cousin. I think we can get to know each other first as friends, and if we really feel that we are compatible, then maybe we can try moving to the next level." Sincerity was completely reflected on Josef's handsome face.
He glanced at Phoebe with his deep brown eyes, making her feel giddy.
"Please, don't misunderstand me. In fact, I am not a person who would initiate courtship. Maybe, after I know more about you and we decide to meet each other again, I think we might learn that we have much in common." Josef didn't want to scare a woman he liked, especially when they had just met.
In fact, it was not the first time they had met, but Phoebe might have forgotten their previous encounter already.
"Hmm, okay then." She was suddenly at a loss for what to say.
Josef called a waiter over and ordered for them, and then they both started talking about their interests while waiting. When the dishes were served, Phoebe looked at him in surprise.
Was it a coincidence, or did they really have the same taste in food?
When he ordered their meals, she hadn't even noticed.
"Do you like to eat these?" Phoebe couldn't help but admire Josef even more.
"Hmm, do you like them, too?" Josef returned her look.
When they looked into each other's eyes, Phoebe felt an irresistible spark.
Perhaps it was their destiny, and she couldn't avoid it.
In the hospital
Sheryl sat beside Charles' bed and gave him a sponge bath, while lovingly telling him stories.
She had been talking to him every day, but Charles was still in a coma, unable to respond.
Sheryl wouldn't miss a day not attempting to converse with Charles. It seemed that if she didn't talk to him, she would be missing a task on her checklist.
"Charles Lu, wake up. I have much to tell you. You always make me talk to myself. Aren't you afraid that others would think your wife is an idiot?" Sheryl pretended to be angry as she caressed her husband. He was still the handsome president of a large corporation, but his face was low and dispirited at the moment. When his eyes were closed, he seemed gentle. However, this was not what Sheryl wanted for Charles.
She thought she would rather have Charles arguing with her than lying there, fast asleep; trapped in a coma which no one knew how long it would last.
Because Sheryl knew clearly that she was almost losing it; if Charles didn't wake up soon, she might have a mental breakdown.
Time flew fast. As the special nurse came in and told her to leave, Sheryl finally came to her senses and realized that it was already 10.00 pm.
"Hmm, I will now go home. Please, take care of Charles for me. Thank you very much." Even in her most exhausted state, Sheryl still expressed her gratitude to the special nurse.
In fact, this special nurse who had been hired by Melissa had already gotten familiar with Sheryl. Especially after Sheryl gave her a reasonable amount of money to let her stay behind Melissa's back, she accepted Sheryl's instructions without hesitation.
Of course, the special nurse did what she had to do, especially now that she was paid extra.
Although she was already earning enough from care-giving, she thought she could still earn more. She eventually realized that it was problematic to make more if she had to consider Sheryl's requests while trying her best to keep Melissa from replaceing about it.
"Hmm, Ms. Xia, don't worry. I will take good care of Mr. Lu. It's already late now. Just return tomorrow." After saying that to assure Sheryl, the special nurse sat beside Charles' bed. Sheryl nodded with satisfaction and then walked out of the room.
On her way home, Sheryl was restless, and she felt that somebody was following her. She was subconsciously checking the car driving close behind, and she believed it had been tailing her since she started her drive.
She was nervous, so she firmly stepped on the accelerator, planning to get rid of the car behind. But after driving at a speed exceeding the limit, she noticed that the car had managed to chase her. There was no other way out.
If this car could tail her until she reached home, trouble awaited.
After careful consideration, despite the threats present, she figured out a solution, and took a detour, heading to Isla's residence.
When she was about to reach her friend's building, Sheryl notified Isla by calling her.
Isla was surprised to receive a phone call from Sheryl, and it made her worry even more.
"Sher, what's the matter? Why are you calling me at this ungodly hour?" Isla answered the phone in just a ring.
Sheryl faltered and then explained, "A car has been following me. I am scared right now. I will reach your neighborhood soon. Come downstairs and meet me."
"Okay. I am coming to get you." Isla immediately hung up the phone and got ready to rush downstairs.
After putting down the phone, she turned to Aron. "Come downstairs with me. Sher will be here in a moment."
Isla didn't have any more time to explain, yet managed to put on her clothes and took Aron's hand, preparing to go out. However, their kid came rushing towards their room. "Daddy, Mommy, where are you going? Don't leave me alone. I am scared." With a sweet voice trembling in fear, their child felt that he would be left behind.
Isla knew that they had to put their kid to sleep before proceeding downstairs.
On the other hand, Sheryl had finally reached the building where Isla lived.
Since Isla hadn't come, Sheryl didn't dare to get out of the car. She was unable to see if the strange car was still chasing her.
Isla and Aron quickly tucked their kid in first before hurrying downstairs.
When Isla came downstairs and saw Sheryl hiding in her car and looking around fearfully, she was amused by Sheryl's expression.
Isla knocked on the car door, which alerted Sheryl to finally get out of the car.
However, Sheryl was still terrified and couldn't help but look around again. After confirming that there was nobody else, she finally relaxed.
"What on earth happened, Sher? You said somebody was following you? What did they look like? Did you clearly see him?" Isla thought of what Sheryl had said and felt even more worried. She didn't know who followed Sheryl earlier. She just hoped that they were not Ferry's people who would take an opportunity to travel home after her.
"No, I didn't. I just noticed that a car was tailing my car all the time. I..." Sheryl stopped to think about her statements, and in fact, she was unsure if that car was really following her at all.
Hearing Sheryl's scared words, Isla shook her head helplessly and suddenly let out a big laugh.
"Sher, you are being extremely nervous if you actually think that everyone is your enemy. Don't you know? Is there anybody out there?" Isla patted Sheryl's shoulder to assure her and to remind her of her concern.
Sheryl felt a lot better as Isla comforted her for a while.
The three had a good chat for a while, and Isla decided to send Sheryl back home.
"Honey, stay with our child tonight. I will drive Sher home and return tomorrow." While saying goodbye, Isla stood on her tiptoes and kissed Aron's forehead.
Aron understood the situation and didn't have any objections, but reminded Isla to drive slowly and carefully.
He saw Sheryl and Isla off before going upstairs to their kid.
