The Apple of My Eye
Chapter 1648 Sheryl Slaps Leila’s Face

"I am the one Charles loves, not you!" Leila accusingly said to Sheryl. With her right thumb pointing at her own nose, she looked so brash.

Sheryl felt disgusted. She hadn't seen a woman as shameless as Leila before.

In Sheryl's opinion, Leila was the only one who could be that outrageous.

And she really shocked Sheryl.

Completely ignoring Leila's ridiculous words, she smirked and thought, 'Even if my marriage with Charles would end in a nightmare, I am sure he won't marry a woman like you! I have been with Charles for long enough to know who he is and what he wants, and from what I know about him, marrying you would be the last thing he'll ever consider. And if he does, it will be an unpleasant surprise!'

She almost failed to control her burning emotional rage and instead burst into laughter.

Sheryl also felt sorry for Melissa because she was so careless, and had invited trouble into Dream Garden.

Meanwhile, Sheryl averted her eyes and looked to her husband. Charles was still in a coma. And as far as she knew him, he didn't like any form of commotion, especially when it was people arguing in front of him. Despite her husband's unconscious state, Sheryl still wanted to make sure he was in a peaceful environment, so she tried as hard as she could for his room to be as quiet as possible.

But Leila misunderstood Sheryl's considerate silence as weakness, so she continued to carelessly insult, "What? Finding it hard to defend yourself? Do you finally feel the shame? Aha!" Sheryl, still maintaining her composure, didn't talk. But a trace of contempt flashed across her eyes.

Sheryl felt rather confused by Melissa's choice. To Sheryl's knowledge, Melissa was, after all, born from a noble family, so she was supposed to have more appropriate preferences based on her upbringing. But Melissa would rather choose Leila, who was such an uncivilized woman without integrity, compared to Sheryl. It was hard to believe that Melissa couldn't even see through Leila.

Why did Melissa prefer a strange and dishonest woman like Leila, instead of Sheryl? Why did she even want Sheryl gone, and choose Leila to be her daughter-in-law?

Sheryl really had no idea why. But before she became stuck in her thoughts, Sheryl quickly shook her head and came back to her senses. Then she quietly walked toward the door. Sheryl's action struck Leila as a little odd until she spotted Sheryl finally turning and waving her hand towards her. Clearly, Sheryl was gesturing her to come outside.

But Leila was still confused. She didn't know what Sheryl's intention was.

Without thinking too much, Leila yielded to her gesture. Leila felt like she was at an advantage, but she was proud and didn't fear Sheryl.

Outside the ward, Sheryl spoke at once, not wasting time. "If you really love Charles, you should know how to care for him! He is a man who's always been averse to noise. Your voice could disturb him! Don't start an argument in front of him!"

With a glare, Sheryl accused Leila of what she had done.

She couldn't help but doubt in her head, 'Leila, why are you being so hypocritical? You say that you love Charles, but you seem not to care about him at all! You're obviously just in it for the money and status instead of him!"

"It is because you didn't want to lose face in front of him, right?" Leila mocked, not taking Sheryl's warning seriously.

Sheryl endured it and didn't fight back. She continued to remain silent, attempting to see what else would come out of Leila's mouth.

Fully absorbed in her arrogance, Leila took Sheryl's silence as a victory. She thought, 'Sheryl, you can't even make your words fight me, can you? You make it so easy to win. What a joy!'

She continued, "Sheryl, you know what? Even without my meddling, you and Charles would still have ended up separated. You don't deserve to be Charles' wife! And don't be so proud because you have gotten another man to love you. Besides, Lewis is just infatuated with you; when he sees through you, I'm sure he will dump you! See, I know who you really are. So it's just a matter of time, and I look forward to it!" Leila taunted spitefully.

Leila thought Sheryl wouldn't dare to retort. She thought Sheryl would endure everything she said as per usual.

But to Leila's dismay, Sheryl suddenly raised her hand and slapped her across the face before she could react. Finally, Sheryl had had enough.

A sneer flashed across Sheryl's face. At that moment, Sheryl felt so furious. 'She just doesn't know when to shut up. Am I really afraid of her?' Sheryl cursed in her mind.

Dumbfounded, Leila hadn't expected that Sheryl would treat her with such violence.

But it didn't take too long for Leila to come back to herself and snap back. Seconds later, Leila was in a rage once again. She felt humiliated and angry.

Sheryl didn't allow Leila to react. She quickly grabbed Leila's arm with harsh force, and then she pulled herself closer to Leila. Sheryl whispered in Leila's ear, "Leila, there is one thing that you should be clear on. I am Charles' rightful wife! You are nothing! I just can't be bothered to waste time arguing with someone like you! I've been silent long enough, and you finally pushed my limits. I am not afraid of you! I warned you several times, don't push me! Even though Melissa agreed to allow you to stay in Dream Garden, there is still no good reason for you to be there. If I don't agree to any concession, your delusion will never come true!"

Sheryl had reached to her limits when Leila brought up Lewis. She felt her bottom-line was violated by her.

These days, rumors about her and Lewis had been spreading widely across the city. Sheryl had to put up with the fake news. She hadn't expected it would last for so long, and she was now sure someone was behind this, wanting her to lose everything.

And based on Sheryl's bad blood with Leila, she was certain that Leila must somehow be involved in this. By the looks of it, it was time to give Leila a taste of her own medicine.

Leila failed to strike back. Now she seethed with anger.

If there was a mirror in front of Leila, she knew her face must have looked red and swollen. Leila felt her dignity was damaged since she had never lost face like this in public. There was a strong taste of blood in her mouth, which left her rather fazed. She twitched her nose and stared at Sheryl.

Sheryl's slap had been a heavy one. She didn't hold back her full force when she struck out. At first, Sheryl felt a little worried. But thinking of everything that Leila had done to her, Sheryl finally wished she'd hit her harder.

Suddenly, passers-by started to notice the situation between them. Their focuses stayed on Leila's bruised face, some even pointing at her as if she hadn't noticed the mark. Leila felt so humiliated that she wanted the ground to swallow her at that moment.

Feeling helpless, Leila quickly buried her face into her hands. She was on the verge of crying and couldn't take it anymore.

Sheryl didn't relax her guard. Staring at Leila, she was ready to give her another slap. Her rage had not subsided yet.

Leila closely read the situation, and finally, she decided to leave the scene.

The hall became silent again. Sheryl turned her eyes back to Charles. In delight, she curved her lips into a smile.

Despite Charles' state of deep oblivion, Sheryl was convinced that he would wake up soon. She held on to his promise that he would never leave her alone.

Sheryl tenderly pulled out her handkerchief to wipe his forehead.

Meantime, a nurse entered the ward and saw them. She couldn't help but feel warm. The nurse was reminded of her own boyfriend. Truly, Sheryl and Charles' love was infectious.

Sheryl noticed the nurse's presence. She nodded as a gesture of greeting and saw a trace of admiration in the nurse's expression.

But in Sheryl's eyes, everyone just wanted what they couldn't have. That was just human nature.

Sheryl couldn't help but hope that she could stay by Charles' side forever, and that forever only started after he woke up.

On the other hand, she was frustrated following her quarrel with Leila. She was in no mood to continue staying at the hospital. After taking a look around the ward and taking in Charles' environment, Sheryl left Walking alone on the road outside the hospital, Sheryl felt lost. She didn't know how to continue moving forward, nor did she know where the future lay for her and Charles. Her heart felt so hollow. Gradually, tears welled up in her eyes as she started to sob. She was overcome with fear in an instant. She didn't know what could support her to continue her journey through life. Everything felt heavy and unsteady.

But she didn't let herself sink deeper into that depressing thought. She couldn't give up. Taking a deep breath, she quickly wiped the tears off her face, and then she managed a wonderful smile. 'Sheryl, you can't lose because of such a small thing!

There will be much harder and bigger things waiting for you to get over up ahead, and it will be worth it! The kids are depending on you! Charles may wake up soon. You can't afford to give up! Don't give up! Never give up!'

"Sheryl?"

Sheryl's thoughts were suddenly interrupted. She looked around, attempting to discover who it was.

Not too far behind her, she saw Lewis, who looked visibly exhausted. Their eyes locked, and they didn't know what to say to each other. In embarrassment, they only chose to smile at each other, at last. Sheryl had no idea why Lewis had shown up before her all of a sudden though. She hadn't seen Lewis for days, and she had expected that Lewis was finally giving up on her.
