The Apple of My Eye -
Chapter 1688 A Fake Letter
When David finished speaking, Charles didn't know what to think.
"Even a small company thinks it can compete with us now," Charles said in a low voice.
David could sense that Charles was getting angry. He kept his head low as he waited for Charles to scold him. However, Charles didn't say anything, and he raised his head again to steal a glance at him. Charles looked sullen. David was so terrified that he quickly averted his eyes again.
"Are you the actual owner of the company?"
"No. Sir, why?" David shook his head.
He had no idea what Charles was getting at.
While David seemed nervous, Charles was much more composed.
After noticing how nervous David was, he slowly said, "If not, then why are you scared?"
"Sir, I..." David was at a loss for words.
"All right. It has nothing to do with you. You don't have to be afraid. Is there anything else that you've found?" Charles put down the documents in his hand.
After thinking for a while, David answered, "Sir, although I haven't found out who the actual owner of the company is, I found out that someone within the Shining Company is involved."
This was what David had worried about the most. He had been thinking about how he was going to tell Charles this.
"In the Shining Company? Who?" Charles wasn't really surprised. After all, such a leakage wouldn't be possible without someone on the inside.
"Whoever it is, he's really careful, because even I don't know who he is," David answered.
"Okay, I get it. Continue with the investigation. Report to me if you replace anything." After Charles gave his instructions, he leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
Then David left Charles' office. When he closed the door, he heaved a heavy sigh of relief.
Then he walked away.
After David left, Charles opened his eyes again, clearly contemplating on something.
'Who could this person be?' he pondered.
He was racking his brain, trying to come up with possible names. However, he couldn't keep his focus right now. His brain seemed to be so preoccupied with something else that it couldn't function properly. Charles knew that no matter how much he tried, he couldn't concentrate, so he just gave up.
Soon, he left the company and headed towards the Dream Garden.
The Dream Garden was quite peaceful.
Melissa was sitting on the couch in the main lobby, as if she was purposefully waiting for Charles.
"Charles, you're back! How was your day? Are you tired?" The moment Charles opened the door, Melissa walked over to him and beamed at him.
"Mom, why aren't you sleeping yet?" Charles asked as he got himself a cup of water.
"I'm worried about you. Leila said that you got angry at work yesterday. Is there anything wrong?" Melissa wore a worried look.
After he finished the cup of water, he turned to Melissa and said, "Mom, the employees made mistakes. Do you expect me to just let that go?"
What Charles said made sense. There was nothing much Melissa could say about it. She then thought about Sheryl.
"Is there any progress between you and Sheryl?" She knew that the divorce couldn't be dragged out any longer. She had to force Charles to divorce Sheryl as soon as possible before anything unexpected happened to ruin her plans.
"I've been busy these past few days, and I haven't talked to her." Charles' eyes seemed to gleam for a moment; however, it was gone so soon that Melissa didn't notice.
"Then what's this?" Melissa asked as she suddenly held up a letter from a lawyer
She had everything prepared. When Leila told her that Sheryl had sent out a letter to Charles, she had asked someone to make a fake copy, so that she could use it to pressure Charles. Charles stared at the paper in Melissa's hand with disbelief. Never had he imagined that Sheryl would be so heartless. She even sent a copy of the lawyer's letter to the Dream Garden!
When she got no response from Charles, Melissa goaded him by saying, "Charles, I don't want to force you. You should know what this letter means. That's how Sheryl feels. Why can't you just decide?" Charles couldn't take his eyes off the letter. It was like it had consumed him. He couldn't believe that Sheryl would send a second one.
"Okay, mom. It's late now. You should go get some sleep."
Charles was suddenly snapped back to reality by Melissa. He felt as if someone was ripping his heart out.
"Charles, why are you prolonging this? Why can't you give up on Sheryl?" Melissa didn't get the answer she wanted from Charles, but she was getting it tonight, and she wasn't going to sleep until she did. "Mom, I'm tired. Not now!" Charles frowned, a hint of impatience flashing across his eyes.
Melissa just wanted Charles to divorce Sheryl, but he just wouldn't listen to her. What else could she do?
"Okay, I'm heading to bed. You should rest now, too." Even though Melissa still wasn't satisfied, she figured she couldn't do anything else. After she spoke, she turned and headed upstairs.
When Melissa left, Charles heaved a deep sigh. Just the mere sight of the letter had made him so angry. He had instantly grabbed it and tore it apart.
The pieces of the paper fell on the floor from his numb fingers, and his face was grief-stricken.
'Is this really it for me and Sheryl?
No! I'm not going to let this happen. When we got married, I vowed to her that we would stay with each other no matter what!' he thought to himself. Charles clenched his fists as he slumped onto the couch.
Meanwhile, Sheryl was feeling terrible too.
Although she'd already sent out the lawyer's letter, she didn't seem to be relieved. On the contrary, she became even more anxious.
'It's been a day. Why hasn't Charles done anything?' she wondered.
She pursed her lips as she worried over whether Charles had already received it or not.
"Mom, we're going to sleep now!" Clark had just gotten out of the bathroom. He noticed that Sheryl was deep in thought, so he walked over to her and held her hand.
"All right. Clark, you're such a good boy. Has your sister finished brushing her teeth?" Sheryl said to Clark, beaming at him.
Clark nodded as he answered, 'Yes, she's coming out soon!"
