The Apple of My Eye -
Chapter 1947 I Am Your Husband
Charles was amused by Clark. He put him down before he walked up to Sheryl. Without saying a word, he pulled Sheryl into his arms. Sheryl tried hard to wriggle free from his grasp. "What are you doing, Charles? The kids are watching!"
"You're my wife. I don't think there is anything wrong with my actions." Sheryl's denial only urged Charles to hold her tighter. He had missed her so much. No matter what she said, Charles didn't have the heart to let her go.
"Let go of me!"
Sheryl commanded, once again. He was making her extremely uncomfortable. 'What does he think he is doing? I can't just forget the past. I won't allow him to act as if nothing has happened. There is no way we are going back to normal!' Sheryl thought to herself with determination. Unless and until she was sure that she and Charles wouldn't go through another breakup, she wouldn't go back to the Lu Family. She was very well aware that she couldn't take another humiliation.
"Fine! If that's what you want." Charles reluctantly let go of Sheryl as he could see she was getting upset.
Sheryl walked away from Charles, letting out a sigh of relief. Earlier, under his control, she had felt suffocated.
"Clark, go ask your sister to come downstairs. Breakfast is ready," Sheryl ordered Clark as she walked to the kitchen.
In the following days, Sheryl couldn't avoid Charles, no matter how hard she tried. Somehow, she tolerated his presence.
Tonight was party night. Charles had come to her house to prepare for it quite early.
It was the first time Sheryl had seen Charles become so invested in the preparations for a function. Throughout the day, he looked enthusiastic. Nobody would have guessed that he was the president of the Shining Company. Sheryl couldn't help but soften her heart towards him.
"Charles, what will David say if he sees you like this?" Sheryl teased Charles, smiling.
Charles was at a loss for words when he saw Sheryl's smile. He couldn't remember the last time he had seen her smile.
Being stared at by Charles like this, Sheryl started to feel embarrassed. She realized she had let her guard down. To rectify her mistake, she looked away.
At 6 pm sharp, Sheryl glanced at Charles.
"I did not invite you to my party tonight," she said, urging him to leave.
Charles didn't argue with Sheryl. He said goodbye to the kids and left the mansion.
His reaction left her a bit confused. From what she knew, Charles wasn't the kind to give up so easily. 'What happened to Charles?' she wondered.
Realizing she didn't have time to dwell on such thoughts, Sheryl shook off this thought. 'Maybe he's just too tired,' she told herself and left the matter.
Going to her room, she dressed in a black evening dress, which displayed her hourglass figure perfectly. Even without any effort, Sheryl was very charming. But once she showed up in this elegant dress, she immediately caught everyone's attention.
Everyone came to talk to her since she was the hostess of the party.
Sheryl greeted everyone with a smile. But she caught sight of her kids constantly looking at the door. It seemed like they weren't enjoying the event. So she walked to them and caressed Shirley's head, asking, "Shirley, what's wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong, Mom. Why do you ask?" Clark answered, trying to hide his emotions.
"Well, if nothing is wrong, why are you two standing near the door instead of going inside and enjoying the party? All your friends are over there. Go and join them!" ordered Sheryl. She then grabbed her children's hands as she wanted to walk them to the living room.
Clark pulled back his hand. He shook his head and said to Sheryl, "Mom, Jackson isn't here yet. We're waiting for Jackson!"
"Jackson?" Sheryl's confusion only intensified when she heard Clark's reply. She turned around and pointed her fingers at Jackson. "What are you talking about, Clark? Isn't that Jackson? He's already here!" "Mom, can't you just leave us alone?" Shirley pouted and complained to Sheryl. She seemed a bit disappointed.
Shaking her head, Sheryl walked away.
At this moment, a man walked towards the mansion. Clark and Shirley's sad faces had lit up with smiles on seeing him. But when the man came closer, the smiles on their faces disappeared.
They had mistaken him for Charles. However, once he came close, they realized it wasn't him.
"Uncle Li, you're here!" Although Clark didn't like Damian, he still greeted him politely.
"Clark, Shirley, here are your gifts." Damian looked at the two children and pinched their faces, smiling brightly.
Sheryl saw Damian too. She walked to him and said, "Good to see you, Damian!"
"You too. Am I late?" Damian had always been a gentleman, and his figure was quite similar to Charles' so Sheryl liked him.
"You look stunning tonight!" Damian hugged Sheryl and then followed her inside.
While Sheryl was busy talking to Damian, her focus went back to her kids. All of a sudden, they had let out an elated scream.
Curious to know what had caused this, she followed their gaze.
"Dad..."
Clark and Shirley said excitedly and ran to him.
Sheryl was surprised to see Charles. She had assumed Charles wasn't coming to the party.
Immediately, she understood his wicked plan. He wanted the children to call him dad out loud in public. This way, Sheryl couldn't ask him to leave. 'How smart,' she thought with anger.
Sheryl was a little mad at Charles' behavior. Just when she wanted to ignore him, she saw him walking towards her. Sheryl looked at Damian, who was standing next to her. Before Damian could react, she grabbed his arms and moved closer to him.
Damian didn't move at all, although he was caught off-guard.
Soon, Charles was close enough to see the scene clearly. He noticed there was a man standing next to Sheryl.
The moment Charles noticed the intimacy with which Sheryl was dealing with the man, his fury became tenfold.
From the corner of her eye, Sheryl noticed the look on Charles' face. He was both sad and disappointed with her. This filled her with immense pleasure. She was happy that Charles' plan had backfired. Sheryl continued to ignore Charles. Moreover, she didn't even acknowledge his presence. Instead, she held Damian's arm and walked away.
Clark and Shirley ran to Charles seeing him standing motionless. They dangled from his arms and asked, "Dad, why don't you go replace Mom?!" "Yes, I'm going to replace her." Charles hugged his children and followed Sheryl.
Sheryl was holding Damian's arm very tightly, but her face gave away her fear. Damian could easily tell she was doing this just to show Charles. Deep down, he knew she had no feelings for him. However, he wasn't mad at her for using him to make Charles angry. Instead, he was glad that Sheryl was holding his arm. This was enough to make him content.
Damian pulled Sheryl closer to him and smiled at her.
Sheryl smiled back at Damian.
"I'll help you to continue with this act. Don't worry!" Damian whispered in Sheryl's ears.
Sheryl felt grateful to Damian. She lowered her voice and thanked him, smiling sweetly.
In everyone else's eyes, Sheryl and Damian looked like a happy couple.
Charles was standing not far away from them while watching the whole thing. His anger grew stronger and stronger as he saw how intimate Sheryl and Damian were.
His blood began to boil when he caught them whispering to each other. Now he quickened his pace and caught up with them.
With fire in his eyes, Charles stepped between them and asked Sheryl, "Who is he?"
"None of your business," Sheryl answered indifferently.
Charles grew even angrier. He clenched his fists and said to Sheryl, gritting his teeth, "I'm your children's father. It's my business!"
"Yes, you are my children's father, but that doesn't mean you can control my life," Sheryl retorted back.
Charles shot a cold glance at Sheryl. Unable to restrain himself any longer, he hollered, "How can you not care? I'm your husband for God's sake!"
What Charles said got everyone's attention. Every pair of eyes present began to look at them, enjoying the spectacle.
