William wanted to ask Brittany something privately, so he made an excuse to his mom: "Mom, I remember the doctor saying something about changing my medicine; could you go ask for me?"
Tracy Dillion immediately caught his drift, wanting to give him some alone time with Brittany. "Sure, Bri, you keep William company."
After his mom left,
William looked at Brittany, a sour feeling spreading in his throat. He stayed silent for a while before finally asking, "Are you married?"
"How did you know?" There was a moment of confusion in her eyes, but it quickly disappeared. It was inevitable that the news would get out.
Brittany's expression changed slightly before she admitted, "Yes."
William was taken aback. "Didn't you just break up with Finn?" Why did you get married so quickly?
Brittany tightly gripped her fingers, staying silent for a while before explaining, "The Dustins wanted me to get married. I didn't want to marry the person they chose for me, so I just got married." She didn't mention that it was a sham marriage. William felt a pang of sympathy for Brittany and regret for coming back too late.
"What's he like?" he asked.
What he really wanted to know was why Brittany had to marry someone so suddenly and why she chose a stranger instead of him. Did she not trust him? Or did she not know how he felt about her?
"Just an average guy." Brittany apologized, saying, "I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to hide it; I just didn't think it was necessary for the whole world to know I'm married."
Besides, this wasn't the marriage she had been hoping for. There was no need for the whole world to know about a marriage that was destined to end in divorce. William wanted to say a lot of things, but in the end, he chose silence.
Before Brittany left, she bumped into Tracy Dillion and greeted her. After Tracy Dillion returned to the room, she was still musing, "Bri is a good girl. Where does she work? What's her family situation like?" She didn't care about the background of her future daughter-in-law, as long as she was someone her son liked and was a good girl.
William interrupted her, saying, "She's married."
His mom choked up at the news, thinking about how her son got his head injured trying to save her, and now she was already married. "William."
"She doesn't know that I like her." William said, "We've always been just friends."
Tracy Dillion felt a pang of sorrow. She comforted him a bit and then made an excuse to leave.
Isaac was on a business trip and hadn't been in touch for several days.
Brittany didn't ask about his schedule. She kept working as usual.
Tracy Dillion's attitude toward her suddenly changed. The warmth from their first meeting was gone, replaced by a certain distance. Besides bringing soup every day, she barely stayed there anymore.
At the Imperial City airport.
A flight landed, and a tall man walked out of the airport, followed by Nathan, who just hung up the phone.
"Mr. Salter, I just got the news that William has been hospitalized for a while and hasn't been discharged yet."
Isaac stopped in his tracks.
No wonder Velvet Glow Jewellery had been quiet these past few days.
"Is it serious?"
"Apparently, it's a head injury."
Isaac changed his plans: "Let's go to the hospital."
Half an hour later, Isaac arrived at William's hospital room. Nathan, who was following behind, put down the fruit basket, expressed his concern, and left. "What are you doing here? I'm about to be discharged." William joked.
Isaac walked to the side of the bed, his gaze falling on William's head. It looked like a serious injury.
"I heard it was because of a woman? Why isn't she here taking care of you?"
He knew William had someone he liked, but he was always curious. Unfortunately, William never let anything slip.
Even though they were good friends, he didn't know who that person was.
William: "She's busy; she has to work."
More importantly, she was already married. He needed to keep his distance.
He didn't want Brittany to have a bad reputation, and he definitely didn't want her to be the subject of gossip.
Isaac chatted with him for a bit and was about to leave when he spotted a thermos covered in flowers on the bedside table. He paused for a moment. That thermos looked familiar, as if he'd seen it somewhere before.
Brittany had one just like it.
He turned his head and asked, "Is this thermos from her?"
