"Yeah, Grace was pretty antsy about it, so he tied the knot."
Even though Wesley was curious about who Isaac's bride was, and had the means to replace out, he didn't bother. He knew Isaac would spill the beans when the time was right, so why go to all that trouble? Besides, if Isaac found out he was snooping around, it could stir up a hornet's nest.
A thought flitted through William's mind, but it was gone as quickly as it came. By the time he hung up the phone after making plans with Wesley, it was too late to grasp that elusive idea.
At half-past seven, Brittany asked Isaac if he was off work. Once she got the green light, she sprang into action and started prepping dinner.
The Dustin family had a thing for seafood, so she picked up a couple of recipes growing up.
As she was cooking, the front door swung open. Brittany poked her head out of the kitchen, "Zakky, you're home."
Isaac took off his shoes, "Mhm."
He was always a bit frosty, but Brittany was used to it. She shrugged it off and said, "Wash up and get ready for dinner."
Isaac walked into the kitchen, sniffing the delicious smell, "I thought you said you were a princess of the Dustin family. How come you can cook so well?"
Ever since he met Brittany, he noticed her cooking skills were top-notch.
"My mom passed away early. The Dustin family never took to me, so I moved out pretty young. I learned all this myself."
Shortly after Julie passed away, Robert married Gianna and brought along Patrina, who was half a year younger than her.
Patrina was the apple of their eye. With Gianna stirring the pot, Brittany quickly fell out of favor.
The three of them were a picture-perfect family, and Brittany was the odd one out. She couldn't stand the sight of them, so she moved out.
Hearing this, Isaac took a look at Brittany. She seemed indifferent, but her eyelashes were quivering as she spoke. Clearly, she wasn't completely unaffected. Isaac wanted to comfort her, but Brittany turned around with a smile, "Let's eat."
After washing his hands, Isaac helped her serve the food. He looked around the table, "Anything special going on?"
Such a lavish dinner.
Brittany got up, pulled out a bottle of red wine from the cupboard, and said, "A friend gave it to me a while ago. Let's give it a try."
"You're allergic to alcohol, aren't you?"
"I can handle a bit of wine."
She wanted to celebrate. She poured two glasses of wine and pushed one toward Isaac, "Thanks for taking me in and saving my skin a few times." She raised her glass, her sincerity shining through, "I wanted to take you out for dinner but never got the chance. So, let's just eat at home."
She paused and added, "Also, I want to celebrate my decision to set up my own business. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly." As she said this, a sparkle lit up her eyes.
Isaac raised his glass, the aroma of the wine filling the air. He clinked glasses with Brittany, "Here's to smooth sailing."
He wasn't particularly fond of seafood, but Brittany's cooking made everything taste amazing. After dinner, Isaac started cleaning up the kitchen. Meanwhile, Brittany booted up her laptop and started hunting for a suitable apartment.
Having learned her lesson, Brittany was on high alert. Once she found a satisfactory apartment, she made sure to first vet the landlord thoroughly. Her phone rang. It was Hannah. She picked up.
"Bri, I found out. That landlord works for Patrina. I knew there was something fishy."
Hannah rolled her eyes in frustration, "Thank god I had a few people tailing Patrina earlier, or else we wouldn't have uncovered their connection." Brittany instinctively stood up, shut down her laptop, and retreated to her room.
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely. I even checked the landlord's bank statements. There's a payment from Patrina."
Looks like it really was Patrina.
Brittany put down her laptop, her expression cold. She and Patrina could never coexist peacefully, but Brittany never thought Patrina would stoop so low.
She began to suspect that Patrina had swapped her design drafts in a competition back in the day. After all, Patrina was the biggest winner in that competition.
