"Brittany..."
"Kari, head back to New York sooner rather than later, don't worry about me. I've got my ways to get through this mess."
"Meeting up now will only put you in the line of fire. It's better for you to go back to New York, so I can have some peace of mind."
Brittany ended the call, changed into a sharp suit, and headed to the Lynette Corporation.
Kari, phone in hand, contemplated calling back.
"Kari, let it be," Ronald saw through Brittany's intention, "Brittany is in deep trouble. If you get involved, it's only going to make things harder for her."
Brittany was distancing herself to protect Kari.
Kari felt helpless: "It's all my fault... I can't do anything..."
"It's not that you can't do anything. We'll head back to New York and wait for the right moment." Ronald believed that Brittany wouldn't just sit around waiting for doom, especially not when her own wedding was being manipulated! Kari nodded, "Then we'll go back today."
Ronald sealed it with a kiss, "Alright."
...
That afternoon, just as Brittany finished a meeting, she received an anonymous email.
Kari is back in New York. If you need anything, just let me know.
The tone was unmistakably Ronald's.
After pondering for a moment, she replied: "Take good care of Kari. As for everything else, don't get involved.
Ronald replied instantly: Mr. Salter is still alive. There's always a way out.
He then deactivated the account.
Brittany frowned upon seeing the message.
How did Ronald know Isaac was still alive?
Ronald's power was mostly in New York. How could he know something that happened all the way in Craneville? Lost in thought, the secretary came in, holding a bunch of sunflowers: "Mr. Lynette, someone sent you flowers." Brittany didn't need to guess who it was from.
She took the flowers, replaceing a card inside. The handwriting was sharp, quite contrary to his gentlemanly appearance. "Got tied up with work tonight. Can't make dinner."
Brittany placed the card on her desk and dismissed the secretary.
Once alone, she arranged the flowers in a vase and continued with her work, not stopping until late into the night.
Most of the company had left when Brittany, grabbing her coat and bag, took the elevator down to the parking garage.
The place was nearly deserted, save for a few dim lights casting soft glows.
As she approached her car and opened the door, arms suddenly wrapped around her, pulling her into a familiar embrace "Not here!"
Brittany was startled. There were cameras in the parking lot.
Isaac squeezed into the car, lifting her onto his lap, his hands tightly circling her waist. His warmth made Brittany instinctively lean back. Before she could speak, he leaned in closer, "Miss me?"
Brittany winced as his grip tightened, "That hurts."
Isaac noticed her discomfort, realizing she had gotten thinner.
"How was your 'date' with Eltham?"
He had been seething when he saw the news.
Knowing she couldn't hide it, Brittany nestled into him, "It wasn't a date. Dad was being blackmailed, I did it for him..."
"I know."
Isaac's eyes darkened, "Eltham is no simple character. Be careful around him."
Eltham was a mystery, with no weaknesses to exploit.
