"Grayson?"
Brittany was momentarily flabbergasted, instinctively turning her gaze towards Grayson. "You are, Mr. Keegan's father?"
The Wright family was synonymous with Craneville's chess dynasty, and Grayson was revered as a professional chess player by countless individuals. She had heard of the patriarch's name before, but they had never crossed paths. Naturally, she had not connected the dots between the Wright family's patriarch and an elderly man playing chess in the local chess club!
Piper approached Grayson with a smile, "Grayson, you finally made it. Keegan has been waiting for you."
"Waiting for me?"
Grayson, hands clasped behind his back, replied, "I've already said, I won't compete. I'm here for "
"Ms. Lynette, how do you happen to know Grayson?"
Piper assumed Brittany must have used some strategy to make the old man remember her.
"Piper, you know her?"
Grayson was surprised, wondering if this young lady was indeed a Craneville socialite. Why hadn't he seen her before? Or even heard about her?
"Grayson, this is Ms. Lynette, Brittany, the Lynette family's heiress."
Piper introduced Brittany's identity in detail, adding, "Yuri, Mr. Lynette is her father."
Grayson, often secluded, barely kept up with Craneville's news.
He had just learned that Yuri had a daughter.
"I see."
Brittany, not wishing to dwell with Piper, bid the old man farewell and left.
Grayson called out to her, "After the match, I'll wait for you at the chess club."
"Alright."
Brittany agreed cheerfully.
Seeing this, Piper became restless, "Grayson, did you meet Ms. Lynette at the chess club?"
"Yes, the young lady is quite talented."
Grayson didn't hide his praise.
Yet, Piper was skeptical. If Brittany was truly good at chess, why hadn't she joined the chess club?
Maybe Grayson, at his age, had mistaken someone else.
"Grayson, let's head over."
Unaware of Piper's doubts about his mental acuity, Grayson, hands still clasped behind him, proceeded to the chess club.
On the board, an intense hour had passed, with Keegan expending a great deal of energy.
Ulysses was no better off.
Both were getting restless, the pace gradually increasing. Ulysses made a rare small blunder, which Keegan seized.
Ulysses quickly regained composure, and the struggle intensified.
After enduring for over half an hour, Ulysses fell behind but managed a comeback in the final moves.
In the end, they tied.
Keegan, with a fine sheen of sweat on his brow, acknowledged, "Truly, you're one of Welandia's most gifted chess players. You have a bright future."
Ulysses bowed slightly, "Keegan, it's an honor to match wits with you. I'm satisfied with this experience."
In all of Craneville, few could match Keegan's skill. Competing with him, even in loss, was fulfilling!
After the game, there was a half-hour intermission.
Keegan stepped off the stage to see his father, "Dad."
Grayson was generally satisfied, "That Ulysses indeed has some skills, almost defeating you."
"I've slipped."
Keegan wiped off his sweat, "Dad, could you "
"I've been retired for years, not as sharp as before." Grayson waved his hand, "However, I have someone in mind."
"Who?" Keegan asked eagerly.
"Brittany."
The moment Grayson uttered the name, a flash of astonishment crossed Piper's face.
"Grayson, Brittany? Are you sure?"
Brittany wasn't a professional chess player. How could she possibly match Ulysses?
It wasn't just Piper who doubted.
The entire chess club was skeptical about Brittany's credibility.
