Isaac swung the door open; the room was as cold and desolate as a ghost town.

Stuff was missing, mainly Brittany's. She had really taken off.

The thought suddenly barged into his brain. Isaac froze for a moment, then saw the bank card on the coffee table, along with a note underneath. "Thanks for everything. Keep the money in the card. We'll sort out the paperwork later."

Paperwork?

Isaac's hand tightly clutched the bank card. He pulled out his phone and dialed Brittany's number. No answer on the other side, for three attempts. Isaac had a gut feeling something was up. He called Nathan, "Track down where Brittany's living, now."

Nathan, mid-chow, immediately sprung into action, "I've got Ms. Dustin's address, I'll text it to you. Do you need me to―"

Before he could finish, the line went dead.

Nathan was confused. One minute he couldn't be bothered to say hi to Ms. Dustin. The next, he was searching for her? His boss was a hard one to read.

Isaac received the address and was getting ready to hit the road when another call came in, "Zac, it's me."

Loraine?

"Zac, I had a car accident on the west side of town, can you come?"

Isaac's face hardened, then he hung up.

Bang-

A metal rod slammed on the door, Brittany's face turned as white as a sheet, "I don't know you guys, who are you?" The man at the helm sneered when he noticed Brittany was alone.

"You're just renting, huh? Well, the owner of this place owes us money. Either cough up the cash or come with us!" Where was Brittany supposed to get the money from?

These guys were no pushovers, and she needed to be on her toes at every moment.

"I didn't know the landlord was in debt. I just moved in."

The men exchanged a look and swaggered in.

Brittany darted for the bedroom, but was grabbed by the hair and harshly thrown back onto the couch. "Pay up!"

Brittany, in a panic, obediently pulled out her phone, "I don't have much left, this is all I've got."

"Eight grand? You think we're idiots?"

The man bashed the coffee table with the rod, shattering it.

Brittany had had enough. She tidied up her hair, put on a sweet smile and her voice softened, "How about a drink first? Can I call home?"

Brittany was a looker, which caught the men's attention.

"Smart girl, go ahead!"

She seized the chance to head to the kitchen. Under their watchful eyes, she returned to the living room with hot water, suddenly tossed it at the leader, then quickly grabbed the fruit knife from the coffee table and slashed at his neck!

She knew she was no match for all of them. She bolted downstairs. The men were hot on her tail, hurling abuse.

Brittany couldn't outrun them. When they caught her, one of them landed a heavy slap on her face, "You dare to trick us, do you think I wouldn't hit you?"

Brittany's head was spinning, and she leaned against the wall, watching them approach.

The leader, now with a makeshift bandage around his neck, reached out with his grimy hands, "We were just after the money, but since you like to play, we'll play along!"

Brittany held on tightly to the fruit knife, ready to strike when they least expected it. But the man learned his lesson, he snatched the fruit knife from her and moved his foul mouth towards her face!
