Chapter 740
Joie watched as Brittany threatened to escalate their argument, biting her lip in frustration. She knew her reputation couldn't withstand any more damage.
"Fine," she snapped. "How much money do you want? I'll give it to you."
Wasn't it what they all wanted anyway?
Money!
Why did they have to act as though they were fighting for the rights of a mere assistant?
Brittany's face turned red out of anger. "Joie, if I cracked your head, how much would you want for it?"
Joie was left speechless.
It was clear to her that Brittany wasn't putting on a show or after money. She was genuinely seeking justice for Zara.
"Brittany, are you sure you want to fight with me over a mere assistant?" Joie asked.
Zara instinctively clenched Brittany's hand. After all, Joie was backed by the powerful Salter family. If this escalated, it could affect Brittany, and Zara knew she would feel guilty for the rest of her life. "Ms. Dustin..."
"Joie, you messed with the wrong person!" Brittany declared, her eyes intense. "Either apologize or we'll take legal action."
Joie clenched her teeth tightly, and after a long while, she begrudgingly muttered an apology.
"Ms. Joie, it seems you don't think you've done anything wrong." Brittany was not satisfied.
Joie bit her lip, took a deep breath, and suppressed her anger. "I'm sorry."
Zara pursed her lips, and Brittany took her away.
The police, seeing that Brittany was willing to settle privately, lectured Joie before leaving.
Joie left angrily, kicking the air in frustration. She didn't go home, but instead headed to the Salter Manor.
When she got close, she bought some fruits and carried them in.
"Grandma."
"Why are you here?" Daniel stood on the stairs, eyeing Joie suspiciously.
Why was the bad women here?
Joie looked around but didn't see Grace, and replied dismissively, "Where's your great grandma?"
"In the back garden."
Daniel had just taken a shower, smelling fresh and looking unusually well-behaved.
But in Joie's eyes, he was nothing but a nuisance.
"Aren't you with your mother?"
Why was he here?
Did Brittany want to take over the Salter family's wealth and intentionally send her son back?
Daniel walked into the kitchen and came out with a warm glass of milk. He took a few sips before looking at Joie. "This is my home. Why can't I be here?"
Grace had said that this place would always be his home.
He held his milk and prepared to go upstairs.
Joie didn't like Daniel. His face was an eyesore for her.
She walked up to him and pinched his face harshly. "You're wrong; this isn't your home. This is the Salter family's home. Your mom and Isaac divorced a long time ago. You're not part of this family!" Daniel's skin was soft, and the pinch hurt, so he pushed Joie away. "Don't touch me!"
"You little brat, you dare push me!"
Joie swung her hand, and Daniel slipped, tumbling down the staircase!
Bang!
Daniel screamed as his glass fell to the floor, shattering into pieces. He tumbled down the stairs, his head hitting a pillar and blacking out.
"Are you okay?" Joie was startled and rushed over. Seeing Daniel passed out, she was terrified.
With no one around, she shakily stood up, took the fruits, and quickly left.
After leaving the Salter Manor, Joie got in her car, fastened her seat belt, and floored the accelerator, driving straight away.
It wasn't her fault.
It was that brat's own fault for standing on the stairs. If he fell, it was just his bad luck!
Grace had been in the garden all afternoon. She remembered that Daniel should have woken up from his nap, so she asked Emily to check on him.
But when Emily walked into the living room, she saw Daniel lying on the floor, and her face became pale in an instant!
