Chapter 777
"Perhaps, it's best if we limit our interactions from now on."
Mila didn't expect Nathan to show her such blatant disrespect. Her face turned into a scowl instantly.
"Don't get upset, Madam," said the girl who had been silent throughout. "Nathan's deep affection for Ms. Malone implies that she possesses some unique qualities. Why not stay in Imperial City for a bit longer, spend some time with Ms. Malone, and perhaps you'll also come to appreciate her?"
Nathan frowned. "Who are you?"
Who was this woman who seemed to get along so well with his mother?
"Don't you remember? I'm Megan Campbell," she said with a hint of embarrassment. "We were high school classmates, remember?"
Megan?
The color drained from Nathan's face, clearly taken aback to see Megan with Mila.
Kari noticed that Mila's mood seemed to have mellowed substantially.
Apparently, Ms. Campbell had a way with words.
"Nathan, I'm doing this for your sake." Mila, unhappy with her son's years of estrangement, said. "Come back to H city with me. Your father and I have already discussed it. You'll join the company, and within three years, you'll receive a 20% share. With the stocks I own..."
"Mom, I have no interest in the company."
He knew it. His mother was always scheming, but he had no interest in the Jarvis Group.
Mila's face turned ashen.
"Madam, let's eat first." Megan tactfully changed the subject.
Mila, conscious of Kari's presence, decided not to continue the discussion.
Throughout the meal, Mila didn't spare a glance for Kari. Instead, she seemed to hit it off with Megan.
Through their conversation, Kari learned that Megan was not only Nathan's high school classmate but also Mila's choice for a
future daughter-in-law. In high school, Megan and Nathan were even rumored to be dating.
Despite it being their first meeting, Mila brought Megan along, evidently to express her disapproval of Kari.
Kari lost her appetite throughout the meal.
"Ms. Malone, here's a toast to you." Megan picked up her glass and walked over to Kari.
Megan's looks were plain, but she had a calm and gentle demeanor that radiated charm.
Unable to put on a pleasant expression for her romantic rival, Kari raised her glass, "Ms. Campbell." Clang!
The moment their glasses met, Megan's glass slipped from her hand, spilling wine all over her dress. Kari frowned. She didn't use any strength at all.
"Kari, was that necessary?"
Mila frowned. "Even if Megan and Nathan were high school sweethearts, there's no need for such hostility!" "Madam, don't blame Ms. Malone. It's my fault," Megan quickly grabbed a napkin to wipe the wine off her dress.
"Don't bother defending her. She's a country bumpkin; what understanding does she have about manners?"
Mila didn't bother hiding her displeasure with Kari. If it weren't for her seducing Nathan, he wouldn't have insisted on marrying her. "Mom." Nathan stood up, shielding Kari. "Kari isn't like that. Now that we're done eating, we'll take our leave."
He picked up Kari's handbag, ready to leave with her.
"Wait."Mila stopped Nathan. "Don't you want to hear about your older brother?"
Nathan froze.
Kari knew the brothers were close. She patted Nathan's hand. "You have a chat with Mila. I need to use the restroom." Nathan looked worried. "I'll come with you."
"No need, I've been here before."
Kari was familiar with the restaurant and wouldn't get lost.
Nathan let go of her hand and Kari left.
Megan, sensing she should give the two some space, retreated. After all, she had some things to discuss with Kari, too.
