Cassic.
I am taken aback by what Kayden just said. I pull away from him so I can look at his face.
His expression is tender, sincere, even boyish. He does not look like the calculating man I used to know. Right now, as he stares back at me, he really does look sincere.
But his question is weird. Usually when someone asks you if there’s anything that you want or need to tell them, they already know what it is! They are just giving you a chance to come clean.
Oh, da(n it! Now, I wonder what it is that Kayden wants me to tell him.
Is it about Kai? Does he already know that Kai is his son?
But that can’t be. I know Kayden well. If he knows that Kai is his son, he’d be breaking down all my walls, demanding for an
answer.
I let out a nervous giggle. “What do you mean?”
I look into Kayden’s eyes, searching for any hint of what he might suspect. But all I see is genuine concern reflected back at me. His gaze is unwavering, his expression open and vulnerable. It’s disarming, to say the least.
He shrugs. Then he pushes a lock of stray hair away from my face.
“Cassie, I… I just want you to know that you can trust me. That you can confide in me, no matter what it is.”
The sincerity in his voice almost made me tell him his connection to Kai. But I hold back, the truth lodged like a stone in my throat. How can I tell him that Kai, the bright-eyed little boy he adores, is actually his own flesh and blood? The potential consequences loom over me like a dark storm cloud ready to burst.
“Kayden, I appreciate your offer. But there are some things that are… complicated.” My voice wavers slightly, betraying the turmoil inside me.
He nods slowly, understanding flickering in his eyes. “I get it, Cassie. You don’t have to tell me everything right now. Just know that I’m here for you, no matter what.”
“Even after we get out of here?”
He nods, smiling. “Yes. I’m on your side, Cassie. I will never do anything that will cause you harm.” He pulls me towards him, giving me a hug.
We stand there locked in an embrace, the warmth of his body seeping into mine, melting away the barriers I’ve built over the years. For a moment, I allow myself to lean into him, to savor the sensation of being held by Kayden, the man who once was my husband.
As we pull away, a flicker of mischief dances in Kayden’s eyes. Without a word, he takes my hand and leads me towards the middle of the pool.
“Kayden, what are you doing?” I laugh.
Without warning, he splashes a handful of water at me, his laughter infectious as it echoes through the pool area. I gasp surprise, then retaliate by splashing him back, our playful water fight quickly escalating.
The cool water surrounds us, gleaming under the soft glow of the pool lights, creating a magical atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. In this moment, with Kayden’s laughter ringing in my ears and his eyes sparkling with joy, all the tension and uncertainty between us seems to fade away.

That evening, Kayden orders some ingredients from the kitchen And for the first time in years, I cook beef medallions for him, the way I always did when we were married.
“Anything I can do to help?” he asks as he stand behind me. He steps closer and I can feel his warmth behind me.
“No,” I say, “Just sit there, and wait for me to finish.”
I feel him nuzzle my neck. His breath tickles my skin, sending shivers down my spine. The intimate gesture catches me off guard, and I let out an involuntary moan.
“Kayden…”
As his warm breath tickled the nape of my neck, I felt a tingling sensation spread through my body. My hands trembled slightly as I continued to sear the beef, the sizzle of the pan intermingling with the pounding of my heart. Kayden’s proximity was intoxicating, his scent enveloping me in a cloud of desire and nostalgia.
“Kayden, you need to stop,” I giggle. “Otherwise, I won’t be able to finish this. You choose.”
He chuckles. “Okay, fine.” He gives me one last kiss on the neck and then he walks over to the kitchen counter.
I turn away from him, focusing on the sizzling pan in front of me. The aroma of the cooking meat fills the air, making me feel hungry
“That smells so good!” Kayden says. “I can’t wait to have a bite.”
“Don’t expect too much, though. I haven’t cooked this in a while.
As the beef medallions sizzle in the pan, filling the air with a mouthwatering aroma, I steal a glance at Kayden. His eyes are fixed on me, a soft smile playing on his lips as he watches me move around the kitchen with practiced ease.
“Is there anything you need?”
“Go, set the table. This will be done soon.”
After a few minutes, I serve the dish. Kayden’s face lights up with delight.
The beef medallions glisten under the soft light of the dining room chandelier, their rich aroma filling the space and adding to the air of anticipation. I watch as Kayden takes a bite, closing his eyes to savor the flavor. A small, contented smile tugs at the corners of his lips, and for a moment, all I can focus on is the way his features relax in pleasure.
“My God! No one cooks this better than you do!” he says. “And that is saying a lot because I’ve been to many places around the world ordering this.”
As he chews, I feel a surge of satisfaction within me – not just from seeing him enjoy my cooking, but also from the realization that despite everything that has happened between us, we can still share a magical moment like this.
“Did you like it whenever I cooked for you back then?”
For a brief moment, I see a shadow of regret cross his face.
“I have always loved it when you cook for me. I’m sorry, I never told you about this before. But I appreciate it very much,” he replies. “You know, there were times when I cannot wait to end a meeting because I’m hungry and I want to go home to eat the dinner that you cooked for me. Plenty of times, I miss company dinners because I would rather eat with you.”
My eyes widen in surprise. “Seriously?”
He nods. He reaches forward to take my hand. “It’s not just your cooking that I crave. It’s also you. Even though I didn’t say a word, but I liked sitting next to you at dinner.”

I feel a rush of emotions flood through me at his confession.
“I never knew,” I whisper, my voice barely above a breath. “I always thought you didn’t care.”
“I cared more than you’ll ever know,” he murmurs, his thumb gently caressing the back of my hand. “I should have told you then, but I was too blind to see what was right in front of me.”
His words hang in the air, heavy with unspoken longing and regret.
“Kayden…” Tears peek from my eyes.
