LUNA ADIRA

Everything felt like it was falling apart. My daughter was being targeted, and it was something I tried to do everything I could to make sure that didn't happen. Now she was lying in a hospital bed, unconscious and injured. She was going to be okay. Doctor Zayla assured me of that, but I felt like a part of me was being taken away. The thought of losing my children was too much.

Mark wrapped his arms around my waist and held me close to him. His touch was enough to make the tears start flowing freely. I had managed to keep it together as best as I could in front of the rest of the pack, but now that we were in the privacy of our own room, I was breaking. Mark stroked my hair and whispered in my ear. "Shhh. It's okay. She'll be okay."

I found myself pulling away and looking up at Mark with tears still falling freely. "She's okay this time, but clearly the Council of Magic isn't doing their job. Winslow said they could contain that creature, but whatever those vampires are doing is breaking down the sorcerers' magic. This attack was much worse, and if we don't do something, our children could end up dead."

Mark's jaw clenched, and I knew he was struggling with all of this as much as I was. "We will do something and stop this. We didn't fight this hard to have a family only for this prophecy to destroy it now."

"I was supposed to be the Daughter of Moon and Magic-not Remy. This isn't fair. Haven't we been through enough?" I was angry and frustrated, and it only increased the amount of tears flowing from my eyes. Before Remy and Caulder were even born, I had almost lost Mark, and I almost died myself just because of some greedy people wanting the power the prophecy promised. We were supposed to be past that, but now it looked like all of that was for nothing, since my daughter was the real Daughter of Moon and Magic. "We have, but it's just proof that we can get through anything," Mark said. "We're stronger now. We just have to attack first."

My body went rigid as a realization hit me. That was it. "We have to attack the vampires before they are able to free that creature fully."

Mark's mind started racing, and I could tell he was going over the possible outcomes. "That could start a war if we're not careful."

"They attacked us first. They threatened our daughter and our pack, and I will do what it takes to take them down. I'm not about to sit around and wait for another attack." I was fuming, and I couldn't sit still. I grabbed a notepad and started writing down all of the things that would need to happen before we could actually make this plan work.

"The first step is we have to shut down the school until this is solved. Remy has to be watched at all times as well. If another attack happens, we can't be caught off guard. We have to make sure the pack is safe here before we go after anyone," he said firmly, and he was right. We should have taken these precautions after the first attack, but I had foolishly put my faith in the Council of Magic. Now several of the young pack members were injured.

Mark walked over and looked over my shoulder to look at my to-do list. He pointed at it and added, "We need to have a meeting with Reyland as soon as possible. If we are going to go after these vampires, we will need back up, because we can't leave this pack unprotected."

"I will contact him first thing in the morning." It had been too long since I had seen my father after all. He was in charge of the wolf pack in my hometown, and even though it was only an hour away from here, we often got distracted by our busy lives and didn't see each other as much as I would have liked.

Mark grabbed the list from me and set it down on the desk. He linked his hand and guided me to the bed. "Perfect. Now I need you to rest, dear. It's late."

"I want to visit Remy before I sleep again," I said. I wanted to stay in the hospital room with her all of the time, but I couldn't put my life on hold until she woke up. I had planned on sleeping in the room with her at least.

Mark didn't let go of me and pulled me onto his lap instead. "Others are with her now. We need our rest or we won't be any good for this pack. They will come get us if anything changes."

I didn't want to sleep, but now that I was in Mark's arms, I could feel the heaviness in my body. I decided not to fight him, because sleep was sounding more and more appealing. We shifted into a more comfortable position on the bed, and I let Mark's warmth surround me.

Before I fell asleep, there was still one thought tugging at the back of my brain. "There were reports of a strange man during the attack today." I had read the witness reports from all of the students, and while there were some discrepancies in the description, there were several mentions of an unknown person near Remy. I hadn't thought much of it, thinking it was just a student people didn't know well, but as I lay in bed, something told me there was more to it than that.

"I know." Mark's body was rigid against me.

"What if he's the one causing these attacks?" Maybe there was no need to leave the territory to go after the vampires. If they were already here, lurking under our noses, we had a different problem.

"Then we'll hunt him down and do whatever it takes to get rid of him."

HARPER

I didn't know what time Caulder had returned home, but he was in bed with me when I woke up. My eyes were puffy from all of the crying from the night before, so I got up and washed my face. As I looked in the mirror, I still looked like an exhausted version of myself, especially with no makeup on, but that was the least of my worries right now.

I peeked back into the room, and Caulder was fast asleep. Since school was canceled for now, there was no point in waking him up. He needed to rest while he could get it.

I slipped out of the room and headed back to my room before anyone saw me dressed in Caulder's clothes. While it wasn't a secret we were dating, I wasn't ready for others to see me wearing his clothes, especially after the way Luna Adira had acted when she saw me in Caulder's bed. I had been avoiding Luna Adira since then.

Once I was dressed for the day, I headed to the medical wing of the pack house. I hoped it was calmer there now compared to yesterday. I wanted to check on Remy, since I hadn't seen her since the attack. It was my turn to see my best friend. When I opened the door to the patients' room, I saw Doctor Zayla taking Remy's vitals. I hung back until she was done, making sure I wasn't in the way. When Doctor Zayla was done, she set down her clipboard.

She didn't look at me when she spoke. "Miss Remoria will be fine. She still hasn't woken up, but her wounds are healing nicely. She should be completely healed by tomorrow."

It was strange hearing someone use Remy's full name, but Doctor Zayla was usually formal with the pack. She didn't see the point in nicknames.

"Does that mean she'll wake up tomorrow?" I asked. I was happy Remy was healing, but I felt like I needed her to wake up. Everyone needed her to wake up. I missed talking to my friend. There were too many things I needed to talk to her about, and I still had a fear she wouldn't wake up, and I wouldn't get the chance to tell her everything that had happened with Caulder.

I hadn't thought much about the fact that he was my mate. There hadn't been a chance to really reflect on what that meant, so I pushed it down for now. Besides, Remy was the only one I really wanted to process that information with.

"There is no telling when she will wake up," Doctor Zayla said. "The mind and body are two different things. Even when the body is healed, there can be things that stop the mind from waking up."

I nodded slowly, not sure what to say. Those words only fed into my fear.

I waited for Doctor Zayla to move on from Remy before I moved to her bedside. I sat on the chair next to her and grabbed her hand.

"Hey Rem. I miss you. I know it hasn't been that long since we talked, but I still miss you." My throat tightened as I thought about her blood on my hands again. "I need you to wake soon, okay? Caulder needs you. I think he blames himself for what happened to you. I don't know if he'll be able to push through if he loses you from this."

I looked at Remy's body, and it was strange. Her chest rose up and down at a steady pace. She looked just like she was sleeping, and if it wasn't for the constant reminder of the beating heart monitor, I wouldn't have thought she had received a deadly wound to her stomach.

"You'll pull through this." I wasn't sure if I said it for her sake or for mine. "You're one of the strongest people I know, so I know you'll wake up just so you can kick that creature's butt for trying to attack your brother."

I stayed with Remy several more minutes until the knot in the pit of my stomach became almost too much to bare. I started walking towards the door when my name was called out.

"Hey, Beta's daughter. Come here for a sec." I instantly recognized the voice as Julie's, and my stomach twisted into a pretzel.
