The Blood Moon Twins -
Chapter 63
BLADE
I could feel all eyes on me, and it made me nervous. I tried to not let it show by keeping my face as still as possible, but it was hard being in a room full of werewolves who looked uneasy at the sight of me alone. I understood it. Just the idea of being around a werewolf made me uneasy normally. Our ancestors had been enemies for long before I was even born, and it wasn't an easy idea to erase.
If it weren't for Remy, I wasn't sure if I would care at all about these werewolves being affected by Draven's actions. I would have left this town and returned home to stop Draven at the source. Instead, I chose to hang around to make sure Remy was okay, and now I was having a hard time leaving her.
Remy held my hand under the table. She had been rather quiet after the incident after she woke up. I could tell her mind was racing, but I didn't know what was going on in there. Caulder quickly filled me in on the prophecy and what had happened with Remy's magic. It should have surprised me, but it didn't. That wasn't the first time I had heard about the prophecy.
I had heard my father and Draven recite a similar prophecy over the years. The wording wasn't the exact same, but I knew it was the same prophecy. My father had wanted to replace the Daughter of Moon and Magic and the Son of Blood and Magic and use them to get what he wanted. He wanted the dark power that resulted in the two of them joining.
Draven saw my father fail at replaceing the ones he needed, so he decided to go his own route. He learned of the dark creature the sorcerers were keeping for themselves, and he thought he could get the same level of power by taking control of that creature, but that wasn't working out the way he wanted either.
I feared that Draven would discover the truth about who Remy was and target her directly. Last night, he was attacking her to toy with me, so he wasn't going full out, but if he knew the truth, I wasn't sure what he would do.
Remy squeezed my hand, bringing my attention back to her. She smiled at me, and it made my heart flutter. I still didn't understand how she captured my heart so quickly, but I knew that no matter what happened, I wanted her by my side.
Alpha Mark stood up, and all eyes went to him. He oozed alpha energy, and I could feel its power filling the air. I liked him so far. He seemed like a reasonable guy, but he was also someone I didn't want to cross. I could see the love he had for his pack, and I knew he wouldn't hesitate to rip the head off of anyone who tried to hurt the pack or his family.
"Thank you all for joining me on such short notice," Alpha Mark said.
The table was filled with various members of the pack. Alpha Mark and Luna Adira were at the front of the large conference table. On either side of them sat both of the betas-Remy explained to me that their pack was unique, since her father had appointed two betas to help run the pack. Next to them were the beta's mates, who helped with the warrior side of the pack. Then there was Doctor Zayla, and one other person who Remy described as their historian. His name was Daniel, and he was the one watching me the closest out of all of them. It made me feel like some sort of specimen. Caulder sat across from Remy and me, and then there was an old woman who did not smell like a werewolf sitting at the end of the table. She had to be the sorcerer Caulder had mentioned before.
"Is this about the attacks on the pack?" one of the betas asked.
"Yes. There's some information we haven't told most of you yet." He paused and looked around. He braced himself, as if he was ready for them to argue against him. "The prophecy we thought was about Adira was never resolved, because it was never about her. Remy was the one the prophecy was about."
Everyone's eyes turned to Remy, and she squeezed my hand under the table. She wasn't the only one who had been kept in the dark about all of this. The silence that filled the room made that very clear.
"I thought this was over with years ago," the female beta said in a volume just above a whisper. If I remembered correctly, she was Harper's mother.
"We did too," Luna Adira said. "But when we found out the truth, we had to keep it a secret to protect Remy. We couldn't risk everyone knowing the truth, because we didn't want her targeted."
"But now, her powers have been returned, and she's going to be like a beacon to those who want to use her," Alpha Mark explained. "Which is why we are having this meeting. Between that creature attacking the pack and the vampire lurking near our territory, we have to be prepared to fight. Others may come for Remy."
"If vampires are our enemies, then what's up with the vampire sitting next to Remy?" the male beta asked. His stare was one filled with distrust. It wouldn't be easy to get him on my side. It wouldn't be easy to get most of the people in this room on my side. "I was wondering the same thing," the historian added. His stare was different from the others, but I still wasn't sure how.
"This is Blade, and he's my mate," Remy announced. Another silence washed over the room as everyone stared at me.
"But the prophecy," the female beta said.
"We are not sure if he is the one from the prophecy yet or not," Luna Adira said, "but we think he might be, which is why he's here. He also has information on the vampire who is trying to break that creature free, and he has offered to help train the pack on how to deal with vampires directly."
"Do we know if we can trust him?" the male beta asked. He didn't care if he insulted me with this question, but I was surprised he would question his alpha in front of everyone like that. They must have had a strong relationship.
"He has assured me we can, and Caulder and Remy have also vouched for him," Alpha Mark said, but it wasn't enough to ease the tension.
I found myself standing up, unsure of what to say to convince the people in this room. "I know none of you have a reason to trust me. I'm the enemy after all." I laughed nervously after I said that. Maybe it was a joke made in bad taste, since no one laughed. "But what I can tell you is that my enemy is your enemy. Draven, the vampire who is trying to release that creature, has an evil in him I have never understood."
I lifted my shirt up and pointed to a scar on my torso. "This scar is from when he thought it would be fun to try to kill me. This one is from when I told him I would never follow him. I left my coven-the only home I have ever known-and swore that I would stop him from doing this to anyone else. If you want to stop him, I can tell you everything I know about him. I want to see him dead more than any of you in this room."
"It would be useful to have a vampire on our side," the historian said. "I would love to pick your brain about how vampires function."
"Come here, boy," the old woman said.
I glanced at Remy, and she gave me a quick nod. I moved over to the old woman, and she quickly took my hand with her own weathered ones. She stayed sitting, which made her seem so small compared to my tall stature. "Do you know your ancestry?" she asked me, looking up at me with bright and wise eyes. Her hands were warm as she held my gaze.
"My father was turned into a vampire, and he shares the bloodline of one of the oldest vampires in existence. I am one of the few vampires who was born a vampire, instead of turned," I said. My father had once told me that those born as vampires were destined to be stronger than ones who had been turned. He had high expectations of me at a young age because of that, but no matter what I did, I was never strong enough. Eventually, he gave up on me.
"And what of your mother?" she prompted.
I glanced around the room, and all eyes were on me. Everyone wanted to know the answer because they wanted to know if I was actually the one from the prophecy, but I didn't have the answers they were looking for. "I never met my mother, and I know practically nothing about her."
"With your permission, I can search your memories and your mind." The old woman seemed genuine. If I said no, I knew she wouldn't push me. This was my choice.
I found myself looking to Remy again. Her eyes met mine, and I knew I had to do this. She had just found out a lot about herself that had been kept a secret from her, and I knew she was scared. Despite that, she was still here, ready to fight against the cards that had been handed to her. I couldn't just sit back and hide when there was a chance to learn more about my past and who I was.
I looked back at the old woman and nodded. "Okay. Do what you have to."
