The Blood Moon Twins -
Chapter 68
REMY
I couldn't sleep last night, knowing I needed to talk to Blade. It wasn't fair to him that I had avoided him, and Caulder made me realize I couldn't keep going on that way. I thought it was too late to approach him last night, but I wanted to talk to him first thing in the morning. The problem was that I couldn't stop thinking about what to say or how he would react. Part of me was worried he would yell at me or something.
When the sun finally crossed the horizon, I popped out of bed, knowing it was pointless to try to sleep any longer. I went straight to the guest room that was assigned to Blade. I knocked on his door and waited for an answer. After a few minutes, when I still didn't receive a response, I knocked on the door again.
"Blade?" I called out, but still nothing.
I tried the door handle, and it was unlocked, so I opened the door and peeked inside. His room was absolutely pristine, as if there was no one even living here. Deciding it was best to not snoop in his room, I closed the door and headed down to the kitchen, hoping to replace some coffee.
To my luck, there was a pot of coffee already made, and the aroma filled the kitchen. It was too early for the breakfast crowd, and our cooks hadn't even arrived to start making breakfast, but I didn't mind. A cup of coffee would hold me over for a bit. I poured myself a cup and then added so much sugar and creamer that it looked like there was more cream than coffee. It was just the way I liked it, creamy with just a hint of the bitter coffee coming through.
"You're up early, my dear Remy," a familiar voice said from behind me.
I jumped and dropped my coffee cup from the startle. I thought I had been alone, and I hadn't sensed or heard anyone approach. My cup hit the floor and shattered into a million pieces. The coffee splashed all over my feet, and the burning of the liquid made me jump. I landed on a piece of the broken mug and cursed as it sliced through my skin.
I picked my foot as a reaction and promptly lost my balance, but before I could fall, arms snaked around my waist and caught me. I looked up into the eyes of the sorcerer from the Council of Magic. Winslow was his name. My body revolted at his touch, and I found myself moving away from him, making sure to avoid the shards of ceramic this time.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked, gritting my teeth to try to ignore the pain I felt in my feet.
"That's no way to treat a friend," Winslow said with a smirk that seemed too cocky.
I looked him up and down, and the wrinkles on his face and nearly pure white hair made me grimace. "You're not my friend. I don't know you." I had barely had a conversation with this man before, and now that I knew the truth, I knew he was the one who forced my mother to keep my magic and the prophecy a secret from me. She might have been the one to actually do it, but the man in front of me was the source of it.
Disgust filled my mouth as I stared at him. I barely knew him, but I knew I didn't like him. I wanted nothing to do with him.
"Someone is grumpy before they've had their morning coffee," Winslow teased.
"Don't make assumptions. It's not the lack of coffee. It's simply my distaste for you. I suggest you leave our territory now. You are not welcome here," I said, taking another step away from this man.
His playful smile changed in a split second. A scowl replaced it, and I could feel the change in his energy. Suddenly, I didn't want to be alone with him.
"Just because you're an adult now, doesn't mean you have any power over this pack. Why don't you leave those kinds of decisions to the ones with real power," he seethed. "Now be a good little girl and run and get your mother now."
I had never wanted to hit someone more than I did in this moment. "Screw off. I'm not your errand girl. And for your record, I'm the one who will be running this pack one day, and when that happens, the Council of Magic will not be welcome in the werewolf territory."
"Why you little brat," Winslow said as he moved towards me, lifting his arm.
Just then, the door flung open, and Blade burst through. He took one look at Winslow and rushed in between the two of us, extending his fangs in the process. He caught Winslow's raised hand and twisted it away. "Don't you dare touch her," Blade hissed.
Winslow's eyes went wide. "Vampire," he said under his breath. His hands started to glow, and then he shifted away, appearing right behind Blade. He wrapped his arm around Blade's neck. Blade caught it just in time to stop Winslow from choking him out. Blade sent his elbow flying into Winslow's gut before grabbing his hand and twisting it off of his neck. "Remy! Run!" Blade shouted at me.
Once again, Winslow shifted out of Blade's grasp, but this time he moved across the room. He created a ball of magic and sent it flying at Blade. Blade jumped out of the way to avoid getting hit, but the furniture wasn't as lucky. A chair shattered into a million pieces, and I dropped to the floor to avoid getting hit.
Winslow sent another attack flying at Blade, and this time it didn't seem like Blade wouldn't be able to dodge it in time. Suddenly, the world around me seemed to slow down, and I watched in slow motion as Blade moved across the room. The ball of magic curved in its trajectory, heading straight towards Blade. It was going to hit him if I didn't do anything.
I stood up, moving at normal speed, despite the room around me still moving slowly. I stepped forward and shot my own ball of magic at Winslow's. The moment the magic balls collided with each other, everything moved back to a normal speed. Winslow froze and looked at me. "You can use magic." His eyes were wide, and I could feel the fear filling him.
I prepared another attack, this time focused on him. "I can, and I'm not afraid to use it on you, so if you attack my boyfriend again, I won't hesitate to attack you."
Winslow looked at Blade, and the color drained out of his face. "Boyfriend? You're dating a vampire?"
"That's none of your business," I seethed.
"It is my business. You could destroy the world, you foolish girl!" Winslow shouted.
The door to the kitchen flew open again, and this time it was my dad who burst through the door. He was still in a pair of pajama bottoms, and he took a moment to assess the situation before letting out a loud growl that shook me to my core. He faced Winslow and said, "What the hell do you think you are doing coming into my pack and attacking my daughter?"
"I wasn't attacking her. I was attacking the filthy vampire," Winslow said, his eyes darkening.
"You are attacking a guest in my house. I could have you killed for that," my dad growled. He moved in between Winslow and us and stood protectively. I could see the hairs raised on the back of his neck, and I knew he was prepared to shift into his werewolf form and attack Winslow in a heartbeat if the sorcerer made one wrong move.
"Guest? Are you insane? You know what is at stake here," Winslow snapped back.
"What I do in my own pack is none of your business," my dad said. He seemed to grow taller as his alpha energy filled the room.
My mom shifted into the room, standing next to my dad. Together, they were acting like a shield for us, and Blade took the opportunity to rush to my side. He grabbed my arm and looked at me with worry filling his face.
"Are you okay?" He whispered. I nodded to him, unable to speak.
"Winslow, this is crossing a line," my mom said, standing tall. Even though she was one of the shortest people in this room, she didn't let her height stop her from showing her strength.
"This is crossing a line!" Winslow shouted, gesturing towards Blade and myself. "You broke our deal."
"You broke our deal first!" my mom snapped back. "You were supposed to keep Remy protected, and you can't even keep that creature contained. Then you come here and destroy things in my home. Your audacity will get you kicked out of here. Now you can either join us in the conference room for a peaceful discussion, or you can get the hell out of my house."
Winslow clenched his jaw. He took another look at Blade and me before answering. His eyes held a hatred in them that made me shift in my place, and I didn't want to be around this man for a moment longer.
"Fine. We will talk about what just happened," Winslow said, but he didn't sound happy.
My dad didn't look happy either, but he gestured to the door. "Right this way."
"I'm going to talk to Remy for a moment," my mom said.
My dad nodded and then followed Winslow out of the room.
"Are you okay?" she asked, looking me over. "There's blood on the floor."
"It's just a minor cut," I said, giving her a smile. "I'll be fine. Promise."
She nodded, but she still looked uneasy. "Okay. If you want to join us for the discussion with Winslow, you're welcome to join if you want. If you want to take a moment to ground yourself, that's okay, too." She looked uncomfortable as she spoke, but she was trying to include me, and that was a huge improvement for her. Part of me wanted to join the discussion because I could, but I wasn't in the right mindset to speak rationally. "I think I'll sit this one out."
