REMY

I thought back to the day that I had felt truly loved and realized that Caulder would always be on my side. I was only eight at the time, and I was happy. I was naive to the ways of the world, and my favorite thing was running through the grassy fields with Caulder and Harper. We hadn't transformed into our wolf forms yet. That wouldn't happen for a few more years. "The more details you can remember, the more successful you'll be," Cain said, his voice ringing in my ear.

I didn't know why this was the memory that came to me, but it was a night that had often stuck with me. I didn't know all of the details, but I remembered the feelings of that night. I remembered feeling happy and carefree. The wind whipped my hair around as I chased Caulder and Harper through the flower fields. I remember all of us giggling and laughing. I had thought those days would never end.

I willed my magic to search for that moment, and I felt it lurch inside of me, zipping through my head as it searched for it. I could feel it attach to the memory, and then quickly the memory became so much more than just the feelings.

I stood in the middle of a flower field, looking up at the night sky. The stars were bright, because we were just far enough away from our town lights that they didn't dull the lights of the stars. A fire was burning nearby as the adults sat around chatting and laughing. There were other kids around, too, but we didn't care about them.

Harper, Caulder, and I were the perfect trio, and we didn't need anyone else. We ran around in the field nearby, playing a game of tag. I watched myself as a child chasing a younger version of Caulder and Harper around. The child me almost caught up to Caulder, but at the last minute, she tripped and scraped her elbow on the ground.

I found myself moving forward, wanting to pick up the younger me and sooth her pain, but before I could even take a step, child Harper and Caulder were by her side. They kneeled next to the younger me and helped her up. Caulder wiped the tears from her eyes. "Are you hurt?" he asked.

"Do you want me to get your mom?" Harper joined in.

Little me shook her head, trying to hold back tears. "I'm fine. I just wish I was faster. I can't catch either of you." I remembered feeling so inadequate, like I would never catch up.

"You'll get faster with practice," Caulder said. He was frowning, and he looked completely distraught at the fact that I was so upset. I didn't remember him being so worried about me at the time. I just remembered feeling not good enough.

"But so will you," little me said, pouting her lower lip. "What if I never catch up to you?"

Caulder grabbed my hand. "Then I'll pull you along with me. I won't ever leave you behind."

"Pinky promise?" little me asked, sniffling to try to stop her nose from dripping.

Caulder hooked his pinky with mine. "Pinky promise. Now let's get Harper!"

Harper screamed and ran away from us. Caulder pulled little me along, helping her move faster and faster until little me and Caulder caught up to Harper. I watched as we tackled her, all of us laughing.

That was the last thing I saw before I was whisked back into the present time. I gasped for air when everything around me settled into place. I felt disoriented for a moment and had to heavily focus on standing up straight. It was strange seeing myself from a third party perspective like that.

"Did it work?" Cain asked.

I blinked at him a few times. "Yeah, I saw a brief glimpse of when Caulder and I were kids."

Cain's lip twitched, and it seemed like he was trying to hold back a smile. "You are stronger than I realized. I wasn't expecting you to be able to do that on your first try."

I looked at my hands, and they were glowing with magic. It slowly started to dim, so I looked back at Cain. "I've had visions of the future. It felt similar to this."

"How did you see the future? I thought you didn't know how to control your time magic?" Cain squinted his eyes as he looked at me.

I looked around at the crowd of people looking at me. They were staring at me like a spectacle, and I didn't understand why. I had no idea what I looked like when I triggered the vision of the past, but it couldn't have been that interesting.

"I don't know how to control it. It has only happened when I've been immensely scared." I looked back at Blade. He smiled at me, but when I didn't smile back, his face fell. Just from the small vision I triggered, I felt worn out. The time magic took a lot more energy than regular magic. I was sure Blade could sense the change in me and was worried.

Cain nodded along. "Interesting. I was never able to trigger visions of the future. You really do have a lot of potential as a sorcerer."

I didn't know how to respond to this. I had grown accustomed to thinking I would never accomplish much as a sorcerer. Caulder had sped past me a long time ago, and I understood that my magic had been suppressed, but I still hadn't thought about how strong my magic was.

"So what does this mean?" I asked.

"It means that you may be able to do more than I was ever able to do, and you will be able to do it quickly, too." Cain stroked his beard, and I could see his gears turning as he processed what this meant.

"So what's next?" I asked, shifting back and forth on my feet. I wasn't sure what Cain was thinking, but something about it made me feel a little nervous. "Next, we-"

"Cain!" a female voice called from across the open area. She pushed her way past the bystanders and continued towards us. She was on the younger side, but she looked older than me. As she approached, I could see the dark circles under her eyes and the messiness of her hair.

"Cain, I need to talk to you," the woman said. She glanced at me, giving me a strange look before looking back at Cain.

I glanced at Harper and Blade, and the look was enough to draw their attention. They started walking towards me, quickly joining me by my side. Something told me they should be here to hear what this woman was about to say.

"Now isn't the time. I'm preoccupied with our guests," Cain said. His voice was respectful but firm.

She looked around and bit her lip. "I know. I should have waited, but I finally made progress with the boy. I know you said I should report to you if I replace anything out."

Cain glanced at me and then took a step to the side, placing his hand on the woman's arm. "Did you replace out who he is yet?" Even though they had moved away, my wolf ears easily picked up the conversation.

"Did it work?" Cain asked.

I blinked at him a few times. "Yeah, I saw a brief glimpse of when Caulder and I were kids."

She pulled her lips tight. "Not exactly. I don't think he works for the Council of Magic. He seems to hate them. I really don't think he's a danger to us."

She pulled her lips tight. "Not exactly. I don't think he works for the Council of Magic. He seems to hate them. I really don't think he's a danger to us." "What's his name?" Cain asked.

"He hasn't told me yet. He said if you are willing to talk to him, he would finally divulge who he is," she said. "I think you should talk to him. I don't know how to explain it, but I really don't think he's a threat. In fact, after the amount of power I saw, I think he could really help us take down the council. If you had seen him that day, you would understand."

"If he's that strong, we need to be extra careful. If he is fooling us and is secretly working for the council, he could destroy everything," Cain cautioned. "Don't be fooled by a pretty face."

I couldn't stop myself from listening to the conversation. I found myself wondering who this boy was who had his identity hidden. Something about the power this girl described made me want to know more.

"I don't like him like that," she said firmly. "But I am starting to trust him. There's something about him that-"

"Davina, maybe here isn't the right place to go into details," Cain said. "I don't have time to meet with this boy today, but I should be able to tomorrow after our guests leave."

"Right. I'll let him know." She sounded almost disappointed.

"Why is there a boy being held here?" I asked. I knew it wasn't any of my business, but I felt the need to ask for more information.

Davina looked at me, and this time her eyes lingered on me for longer. She tilted her head to the side. "That isn't any of your business."

"Davina, please. Remy is just asking a question," Cain said. "Remy, this is Davina. She was gathering intel on the Council of Magic for us until recently, when she came across a sorcerer in bad condition. She brought him back here to get him help.." "So she's like a spy?" Harper asked, pushing herself into the conversation.

"Basically," Davina said. "Although, the council is more secretive than I had expected, so I didn't learn as much as I wanted to. My time was also cut short when I came across the boy."

"Don't sell yourself short," Cain said. "You were doing a dangerous job, and any information is helpful if we want to take down the council."

"Did you meet anyone named Caulder?" I asked, focusing on Davina.

"I don't feel comfortable telling you the information we know. I still don't trust your group. For all I know, you're here to take out our leader." Davina kept eye contact with me, and I could feel her passion emanating from her. She cared about this group, and she cared about Cain. She would fight to protect him.

"They took my brother," I said simply. "If you met someone named Caulder, I just want to make sure he's okay. Please. I haven't seen him in nearly a month." My voice choked at the end, and I found some emotions bubbling up.

This show of emotion seemed to make Davina's demeanor soften. "I'm sorry. I didn't meet anyone with that name." Her apology felt sincere, but I was still disappointed. I just wanted to know that Caulder was okay.
