The Broken Wolf -
Chapter 135
At first, when I saw all of the people, I felt pretty uncomfortable. I could feel through the bond that Seth was as well. Thankfully, I don’t think any of them realized that I hadn’t known my actual birthday growing up, so to them, it just seemed like Benjamin’s daughter finally celebrating a birthday with him.
Lily and some ladies she introduced me to had made a wonderful dinner and Benjamin had started a large bonfire in a nearby clearing. Honestly, it was perfect. Oliver spent a lot of time talking to Benjamin, which really surprised me, and Lily spent most of the night talking to Robbie, which I also found surprising, but they all seemed quite happy getting to know oneanother.
My mom comes over and sits next to me on the large rock I’ve been sitting on, a small smile on her face. “You’re overwhelmed.”
I nod at her but smile. “I wasn’t expecting so many people,” I tell her and she looks upon everyone.
“There are so many people that love you,” she tells me and pulls me into a hug.
I nod at her, trying to hold back tears. “I thought no one wanted me for so long.”
“You were so wrong, Molly,” she says, kissing my head. “So incredibly wrong.”
Robbie comes up to me quickly, reaching his hand out to me. I place my hand in his, but he quickly pulls me to my feet. “Go inside, lock yourself in a room,” he tells me sternly, and I can rarely recall him ever looking this concerned.
Seth sees us and with us quickly, before my mom can even stand up fully. “What’s going on,” he asks Robbie quietly, pulling me close to him.
“Someone crossed the northern border at the Falls a bit ago,” he says. “I alerted George and he sent warriors out to check it. There’s quite a few wolves. They couldn’t get a firm count, but at least twenty. I just felt them cross the border, into the rogue land.”
“s**t,” Seth says, raking his hand through his hair. “Celeste, take Molly in the bedroom. Have Lily go with you two. Don’t open for anyone other than us, Benjamin or Randall. Noone.”
Mom nods to him once and grabs my hand, pulling me behind her. We reach the porch and she reaches out, grabbing Lily’s hand. She leads us both into my old childhood bedroom, locking the door behind us. I sit on the bed, feeling a little dizzy as mom explains the situation.
“How did they know?” I ask, my voice barely a whisper. “How did they know I would be here? I didn’t even know until this morning.”
Lily sits next to me, patting my knee gently. “We didn’t tell anyone until this morning after Seth confirmed. Perhaps they’re not on the property to cause any harm, it’s just a coincidence.”
“It doesn’t feel like one,” my mom says, clearly very displeased. She walks over to the window and peeks between the curtains, trying to remain unseen. “I don’t know why we’re hiding. They’re wolves. They can smell us.”
I nod to her, knowing that she’s right. I don’t KNOW that all the children are now sitting in the living room, but I can smell them in the room next to us along with the mothers.
I walk up beside her and she moves over, allowing me to peek outside. Seth, Robbie and Alex are still in human form but every other adult has shifted. I look around, waiting for anyone to move, but no one does for quite some time. Seth looks over all the wolves, observing the area, just waiting for something to happen. Anything.
Finally, a raggedy looking brown wolf can be seen walking closer, and I notice that it is leading a few other wolves behind it. Seth is looking at them, staring down the brown wolf as it moves closer, almost as if he’s daring him to attempt to breach the wall of wolves they’ve made around the cabin.
Finally, as if something snaps, Seth lunges over the wolves, shifting in mid air and landing on the intruder who is leading the others in. Robbie follows his lead, landing right next to him, biting down on another wolf’s neck almost immediately.
Chaos follows as wolves begin to attack each other, none of them taking it easy on each other. There’s no one, not one single wolf that’s trying to just slow anyone down. They are all trying to kill each other, unwilling to take any chances with the intruders.
The brown wolf Seth has been fighting, I’m assuming their leader looks up into the mess and his eyes land on Alex, who just nods at him. The look that passes makes me uncomfortable as Alex tilts his head towards Benjamin’s wolf and with that, he leaves my mate alone, heading straight to my biological father instead.
Altair looks confused and turns, watching the wolf go after Benjamin.
Seth, I can see from the window. They’re not after us. They’re after Benjamin. I don’t know how to explain it, but Alex is in on this. I’m sure of it.
He doesn’t answer me, but I know he understands. I feel his confusion through the bond, but he immediately turns and takes out the wolf who had left him in an attempt to attack Benjamin. Altair nudges Benjamin, clearly attempting to push him inside. While their backs are turned, though, another dusty brown and white wolf attempts to get to Benjamin and I see my brother jump in, quickly taking him down.
I have long known that my dad and brother are great fighters, but I’ve never actually seen them fight until now. You can easily tell that Robbie is my dad’s and was trained by him, because it’s like watching the same wolf as they jump the same way, roll the same way, and even bite for a kill in the exact same way.
“What’s going on?” my mom asks quietly and I turn to look at her, meeting her eyes.
“They’re all alright,” I tell her, making sure Lily can hear me. “I can see all of them.” I give mom a look, and she clearly understands that there’s more I need to tell her, but that now is not the time. I peek back out the window and feel my mom take my hand, squeezing it tightly.
This isn’t the first fight that my mom and I have spent together, hoping that the boys are alright. This is, however, the first fight waiting for them when we haven’t been locked away in the safe room. It didn’t have windows, and we always had guards on both sides of the door. It strikes me as odd that Seth or Dad didn’t send any guards inside with us here, but as I look at my mom I realize they did. Mom and Lily are in here to protect me should anyone get inside.
Benjamin had clearly been pointed out by Alex, who has since shifted and is fighting, but with no attempt to kill. He’s standing near the front porch to the cabin as if he’s protecting it, but no one is really attempting to actually get in. The wolves continue to get to Benjamin, and I can see them trying to fight them off.
There are multiple wolves that I don’t know lying on the ground, clearly dead. Soon, their bodies will shift back to their human forms. I know some of them will be kind people that I met tonight, who just wanted to celebrate with me. They did not know this would happen, but they all still jumped in, ready to protect me. They have all jumped in to protect Benjamin- their Alpha who isn’t an actual Alpha.
I gasp as I see a wolf land on my dad, causing him to roll quickly and scramble away as quickly as he can. Thankfully, Benjamin jumps in and clearly takes out this other wolf. As he steps back, another wolf now jumps on him, causing his wolf to stumble as he tries to regain his footing. Altair pounces, biting down on the offending wolf’s neck and when he lifts his head, he growls loudly, causing every wolf to pause in their fighting.
I see 4 wolves who look tired quickly retreat, a few of our guard following after them as closely as they can. Altair shifts back and Seth is standing there, looking at the bodies lying on the bloodstained ground. He’s sweaty and breathing heavily as he turns his head to the cabin and looks up, meeting my eyes through the window.
Don’t tell anyone what you saw. No one. There’s more to this than we realize.
I nod slightly in acknowledgement, unsure what exactly he’s thinking, but knowing that he will discuss it with me later. I see my dad shift back and he walks to the cabin and comes inside, knocking on the bedroom door.
“It’s safe Celeste,” he says, his voice rough. My mother flings open the door, and throws herself into his arms. I don’t recall my mom ever acting like this after a fight before, but my dad was always the Alpha then, and she couldn’t peek out of a window and see it, either.
I look up and dad just nods to me, indicating that it’s safe for me to go outside. I walk through the cabin, stepping onto the porch where Seth and Robbie are both dressed again and giving orders to various other wolves.
Benjamin comes up to me and puts his arm around me. “It’s probably safer for you to stay here, tonight,” he says and I nod slightly.
Seth turns to me, his face fallen. “Molly, you can’t heal him. It’s bad, but his wolf should heal him,” he says and I don’t understand. He steps forward and holds me close to him, placing one hand on my stomach over our growing pups. “Do not heal him. Oliver is on the side of the house on the lawn.”
“Seth may need to go back,” I say, watching my mate. “I’m really not sure what he will decide.”
