Chapter 53 The Baby's Heartbeat

Now, the pain caused to several people was all her fault.

Michael looked at Emily but suddenly couldn't speak. Yes, he thought so too. There was no love between them, maybe just some familial affection.

He wondered, 'Why does it have to be now?' This nauseous, queasy feeling made his face even darker.

When Emily looked up, a tissue and a glass of water were handed to her. Emily didn't look at him or take what he offered. Michael clearly felt that Emily was avoiding him.

By the time he went out, Emily had already left. He didn't know what Emily was doing, why she was feeling unwell but still went out every day. She was so restless, but he didn't know what she could be doing outside. Besides her best friend, he seemed to know nothing about Emily.

Michael couldn't help but start reflecting. Over the years, he had always ignored Emily, neglected her, and treated her coldly, but he thought this was a normal way for two people to get along. Maybe this wasn't what she wanted at all, but he didn't understand what Emily really wanted.

As soon as Emily stepped out the door, her phone rang. She took it out and saw it was Scarlett. She didn't want to answer, but the phone kept ringing, so she had to pick it up. As soon as she answered.

Scarlett harshly questioned, "Tomorrow is Veda's birthday. What gift have you prepared? Don't embarrass her."

Emily felt baffled. "She didn't invite me to the birthday party."

Scarlett rounded on her, "So what if she didn't invite you? Are you not going to prepare a gift? As her sister-in-law, you should at least prepare a gift for her. I'm telling you, if your gift embarrasses Veda, I won't let you off." Emily wanted to roll her eyes. Veda enslaved her. Michael bullied her, and Scarlett bullied her too. Except for Mason, she really had no attachment to this family.

Emily said tersely, "Fine, I got it. It's just a gift." Then she hung up the phone. Scarlett saw that Emily had hung up and was furious. "Veda, did you hear that? What an attitude!"

Veda, standing next to her, said, "Mom, ask her if she made the party favors for me? I've already told my friends that I would personally give them party favors."

Scarlett said, "Can't you ask her yourself? Do you want me to call and ask? With an attitude, she even hung up on me."

Veda angrily said, "I asked her last time, and she said she didn't have time to make them. But I've already promised my friends. I can't lose face in front of them, can I? Please ask her for me." Scarlett snorted. "I won't ask. If you want to ask, ask her yourself."

Veda snorted. "Fine, I'll let Michael ask her for me." Then she took her phone and went out.

Veda's call didn't reach Michael but went to Daniel instead. Daniel had just finished his rounds and saw the call. He felt impatient, and he hung up without thinking.

But after taking a step, the phone rang again. He sighed helplessly and answered the call. Veda said, "Hello, Daniel, tomorrow is my birthday. You didn't forget, did you?"

Daniel thought for a moment. He had indeed forgotten. But he didn't say it directly and instead said, "What gift do you want for your birthday? I'll get it for you."

Veda giggled, "Daniel, I don't want any gift. I just want you to come to my birthday party, okay?"

Daniel said, "I don't have time tomorrow. I have to be on duty."

Veda stubbornly said, "Can't you take a day off?"

Daniel's tone turned a bit cold. "I'm a doctor. Many patients are waiting for me. How can I just take a day off?"

Veda, scolded by him, could only say, "Alright, Daniel. But I still hope you can come to my birthday party."

Daniel casually responded and hung up the phone. Veda had been following him since she was little, saying that she would marry him when she grew up. He was really troubled and didn't know how to deal with her. Just after hanging up, he saw Emily walking over. He said, "Emily? Why are you at the hospital now? Are you feeling unwell?"

Emily shook her head. "No, I'm just here for a routine prenatal checkup."

She had another argument with Michael this morning, but she didn't forget today was her routine checkup day.

Daniel looked at his watch and said, "I just finished my rounds early today. I'll take you there."

Emily smiled. "Thank you, Daniel. I hope I'm not interrupting you."

Daniel walked ahead and said, "No, I just finished my rounds and was about to go back to the office. I'll take you there."

They went to the obstetrics and gynecology department. When Emily lay on the bed, she felt the doctor apply cool gel on her belly.

Soon, the obstetrician smiled and said, "It's already 8 weeks. You can hear the heartbeat. Listen, this is the baby's heartbeat."

Emily heard the faint sound of a heartbeat, and her eyes suddenly became moist. This was her child.

Now her child had a strong and growing heartbeat inside her. Thinking of this, she felt a sudden pang of sadness mixed with joy.

She asked, "Is the baby okay? Is it healthy?"

The doctor looked and said, "For now, it's very healthy, but still a bit unstable. The heartbeat is weak, so you need to rest well and avoid emotional fluctuations. Your mood greatly affects the pregnancy, understand? You must keep a happy mood. If you're happy, the baby will be good. If you're in a bad mood, the baby won't grow well."

Emily nodded. "Okay, I understand."

Emily knew that now she and the baby were one. Everything she thought and felt, the baby could perceive. So she decided from today. She must adjust her mood and try to love herself a little more.
