The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains -
Chapter 87 The Test of Returning to the Old House
Being a CEO's assistant was no joke, but being a love bodyguard? That was a whole new level of tough. Andrew knew this all too well.
He'd just managed to get Emily into the car after a lot of sweet-talking at the hospital, and now he had to nervously call Michael. "Mr. Smith, I've got Mrs. Smith. I'm taking her back to the old mansion now." Michael's reply was quick and sharp.
"Whatever, just make sure I'm in another car within three minutes, or you'll lose your entire bonus for the month."
What a ruthless boss!
Emily asked, "Where's Michael? Isn't he coming back to the old mansion? He wouldn't be planning to see his lover, would he?"
While juggling the car arrangements for Michael, Andrew had to keep Emily calm with a smile, "Mrs. Smith, you misunderstood. Mr. Smith has a very important financial meeting today."
He added, "I've already sent another driver to pick up Mr. Smith."
Hearing this, Emily relaxed a bit and even started joking with Andrew. "Andrew, you've been with Michael for so many years, it must have been tough on you."
Andrew asked, "Why do you say that, Mrs. Smith?"
Knowing that the other driver had already picked up Michael from the hospital, Andrew turned off his phone and continued earnestly with Emily, "Mrs. Smith, I actually think Mr. Smith cares about you."
He added, "Otherwise, he could have stayed in the office to rest, but he made a special trip to the hospital to see you. Also, he knew you were being discharged and specifically asked me to hire the best caregiver in Emerald City to take care of you at home."
Some women might be moved by these things, especially Sophia; she would fall for this kind of thing easily.
But not Emily, who had been oppressed by Michael for so long that she now only saw his actions as hypocritical.
Emily said, "He just did these for his face!"
She added, "He didn't come to see me; he came to mock me. And if he really wanted to take care of me, he would have asked Ava, not some random caregiver."
"Or does he think Emerald Lake Manor is a public place where any stranger can come and go?"
It was clear that Emily had issues with Michael's actions.
Especially with Sophia wanting to spend the night at Emerald Lake Manor, which she couldn't get over.
So, no matter what Andrew said, she wouldn't listen.
'Forget it. If she doesn't want to listen, so be it. Anyway, we're heading back to the old mansion soon. With Mason's help, their relationship should improve, right?' Thinking this, Andrew smiled apologetically and stopped talking. Emily, feeling very tired, leaned back in the car seat, thinking she could temporarily escape Michael's control.
Unexpectedly, a breeze blew in through the car window, and Emily took a deep breath, catching a whiff of Michael's unique woody scent.
There was no Ava at the old mansion, only Mason.
But Mason couldn't be with her at every moment.
Just like now, Emily was taken to a guest room by a servant, who said Mason had just taken a sleeping pill and wouldn't wake up until later, so Emily should unpack her luggage first. Emily was puzzled. "Why can't I stay in my original room?"
She should be staying in the room that belonged to her and Michael in this house.
The servant replied, "I'm really sorry, Mrs. Smith."
"The original room is full of dust. Your return was too sudden, and it needs a thorough cleaning."
Emily said, "That's nonsense. I was in that room last time I came here to get something. Grandpa has people clean it regularly every week. How could it suddenly need cleaning?" With that, Emily seemed to realize something, frowning and becoming wary.
She asked the servant, "Who told you to say that?"
The servant hastily denied, "No one."
Emily wanted to get some information from the servant, but unexpectedly, a woman appeared outside the room.
It was Scarlett, dressed in a high-end embroidered coat and wearing exquisite makeup, looking like she had just returned from outside.
Scarlett said, "There's been a dust storm in Emerald City these past few days, and the old mansion is surrounded by gardens. It's normal for some dust to blow in!"
She added, "Are you so used to living in the master bedroom that you can't bear to stay in a guest room for a few days?"
"Mom." Out of courtesy, Emily greeted her politely.
As expected, Scarlett had no intention of responding, crossing her arms and lifting her chin, speaking with an air of superiority, "You can go now!"
After dismissing the servant, Scarlett's sharp eyes roamed over Emily, making her feel very uncomfortable.
After a long pause, Scarlett finally spoke, "You daughters of the Brown family really are something else! One clings to Michael, constantly asking for things! Another comes back to occupy the old mansion, scheming to please Dad. How shameless!"
Emily couldn't let Scarlett misunderstand her like this and quickly explained, "Grandpa asked me to stay for a few days. If you don't believe me, you can ask him."
She added, "As for that Sophia who keeps asking for things, you're probably right. I suggest you talk to Michael about it. Otherwise, not only Michael but even you and Veda might have your money for nice clothes taken by Sophia." Scarlett knew Emily had a point and was instantly furious.
That Sophia, if she dared to come mess with the Smith family again, Scarlett wouldn't let her off!
But the immediate priority was to replace a way to get rid of Emily.
Scarlett said, "I heard your mother is still in a coma in the hospital?"
The sudden change in topic caught Emily off guard.
Her hands, which were folding clothes, stopped instantly. She turned to Scarlett, her face darkening.
Emily asked, "Mom, why are you asking about this?"
Scarlett answered, "No reason, just curious. I remember the Smith family paid for your mother's medical bills. It's almost the end of the month; is it time to pay again?"
Having received benefits, Emily had to back down again.
Emily replied, "Yes, but I'll pay it back."
Scarlett sneered, "Pay it back? With what? You haven't worked a day since you married Michael. Are you planning to sell yourself to pay it back? Ridiculous!"
Emily had no response because her identity as a designer had always been a secret, even from Michael.
"Alright, I never intended to make you pay it back."
With that, Scarlett took a bank card from her bag and handed it to Emily. "The best medical equipment in the downtown hospital costs nearly ten thousand dollars a day. How long has your mother been there?" She added, "Of course, don't worry, I don't intend to make you pay it back."
Hearing this, it sounded like a comforting reassurance.
But with Scarlett's contemptuous and disdainful expression, it was clear that taking this money wouldn't be easy for Emily.
