Yep, that was Everett’s phone number!

No way in hell would Dorothy ever forget the number.

How did he get her number? And why was he calling her?

“Dorothy, why aren’t you picking up?” Karen, who was sitting in the passenger seat, turned around tosee her. Noticing something off, she asked, “You look pale. Who’s calling?”

“It’s Everett…”

Kenneth, who was driving, slammed on the brakes.

“What?! Who?”

“Everett. As she spoke, the phone stopped ringing, the screen showing a missed call.

Kenneth glanced at Dorothy from the rear–view mirror, a tense atmosphere spreading in the car.

“Did he replace out something?”

Karen reached out to take the phone. “Give it to me, I’ll answer it. Let’s see what he wants. I canpretend I don’t know who he is. After all, I don’t know his number and your phone is registered undermy name. It’s normal for me to take the call.”

But Dorothy just stared at the screen, not responding.

Until Abigail and Langston, realizing that something was wrong with their mom, started tugging at herclothes.

“Mommy, what’s wrong?” Abigail blinked.

Langston was a bit more astute. After a moment’s thought, he pulled out his own phone. “Mommy, isthat guy bullying you again? I’ll get back at him right now!”

“No.” Dorothy finally spoke. “No, let me calm down for a bit.”

She needed to know why Everett was calling her, at least get a sense of how far his suspicions orinvestigations had gone.

*Kenneth, you take the kids and go ahead.”

“No way! I can’t leave you alone!” The thought of the people who had once harmed Dorothy’s mothermade Kenneth unwilling to leave Dorothy alone in Eldorria City.

If they could strike once, they could strike again!

“I’ll be fine, and I’ll join you guys soon!”

After saying this, Dorothy patted her son and daughter on their shoulders, then got out of the car.

As Kenneth was about to follow her, Karen held him back.

“Bro! It’s perfectly normal for Everett to be suspicious when Langston suddenly appears in the publiceye. He might just be routinely checking to see which of the women he’s been with gave birth to hisson! If Dorothy refuses to take the call and hides, his suspicions will only grow,”

Kenneth furrowed his brow, his handsome face stern. “He has the nerve to question Dorothy! If itweren’t for him, Dorothy’s mother wouldn’t have

died!”

“What’s the use of saying these things now?” Karen moved to the back seat, hugging the two children.“All we need to do is protect these two cubs. That’s the best way we can help Dorothy. Let her handlethe rest. If she needs us, she’ll ask.”

“Karen, I…”

“I know what you’re thinking, but Dorothy made clear that she doesn’t want your help. You need toknow your limits.”

Kenneth was silent for a long while before starting the car again.

“Yeah, I should know my limits.”

Summer evenings were supposed to be cool and pleasant, but the wind was unusually strong tonight.

Dorothy pulled her coat tighter around her, found a bench under a bus stop and sat down.

Looking at the missed call on her phone screen, she took several deep breaths. Her fingertips wereslightly trembling as she dialed back.
