Chapter 238

Not too far away, Aurelia distinctly heard their conversation, a sharp pang of hurt darted throughher heart, stirring up a storm of emotions.

Hadn't Leopold sworn there'd be no other children in his life? Hadn't he agreed to have avasectomy before getting married? And now, he was eager to have Evelyn carry his child?

What a smooth talker that Leopold was.

She grabbed a glass from the table and gulped down a glass of water, trying to suppress her angerand

resentment.

Of course, Evelyn was the apple of Leopold's eyes. How could anyone bear to hurt her?

She, on the other hand, was nothing but a lowly pawn, easily bullied and hurt without anyhesitation.

She drained the glass of water, but the bitterness in her mouth lingered, spreading from her tongueto the pit of her stomach.

She had her suspicions that Leopold might be sleeping with Evelyn every night and that she mightalready be carrying his child.

While he was enjoying his life, she was bearing the brunt of everyone's gossip, suffering from thewhispers behind her back, and having to face her mother’s tirade when she got home. Life wasunfair.

After work, she anxiously headed to Sunbeam Retreat.

As soon as she entered, Jolin rushed over, and her gaze fixed on Aurelia’s belly, “You got pregnantlong ago, and you still had the nerve to say it was just because of a fibroid. What are you thinking?Do you think you can hide a pregnancy?”

Avery immediately asked, “Aurelia, is the baby Arno’s?”

“No,” Aurelia answered sadly.

Avery was nervous, a sense of foreboding creeping up on him, “Is it Leopold's?”

Aurelia bit her lip. After a struggle, she shook her head weakly and said, “No.”

Her hesitation made Avery worried, and he said, “Aurelia, no matter whose child it is, it can’t beLeopold's. There are rumors among the elites that he broke off his engagement with Elowen tomarry Evelyn. They've even set the date for their engagement party. He is a heartbreaker.”

Aurelia took a deep breath, grateful that she had decided not to tell the truth. It would only worryher mother

more.

Jolin slumped onto the couch, her heart aching. Finally, things were getting back to normal after herson's illness, and now her daughter was in this situation.

She had hoped that Aurelia would soon replace a good match, but now that seemed impossible."Aurelia, tell me honestly. Has someone been taking advantage of you?”

Avery clenched his fists at her words and asked, “Aurelia, who hurt you? I'll go and confront himright now. I'll make him pay.”

No one could hurt his sister without facing consequences.

Aurelia lowered her head, her long lashes casting a shadow over her pale eyes. “No one has hurtme. I just messed up while having fun.”

Her voice was as faint as a whisper in the night.

With her nonchalant attitude, Jolin could hardly believe her ears. In a fit of rage, she slapped Aurelia,“I am so disappointed in you.”

Her cheek immediately showed the imprint of Jolin's hand. Tears welled up in her eyes.

Now, she could only swallow her bitterness, shouldering all the blame and hurt alone.

Avery quickly stepped in to shield her, “Mom, don't hit her. She didn't mean for this to happen.”Jolin covered her mouth, tears rolling down her cheeks, “Is this a small mistake? You've ruined yourlife. Do you understand?”

Aurelia didn't know what to say. She hung her head low, biting her lip and sobbing. Her tears fellone by one, splattering on the back of her hand.

A deathly silence filled the room.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang, cutting through the atmosphere like a chainsaw.

Avery opened the door, his eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the visitor, “Arno, you're back?”
