He paused, then added softly, “Ms. Aurelia should be safe for now staying with Mr. Arnold.”Leopold rubbed his throbbing temple. Safe? He didn't feel it at all.

Kevin presented a pile of documents, “These are border entry records of all infants in the last twomonths. We're checking them one by one. Aaron has bribed the local smugglers to investigateillegal channels.”

Leopold nodded slightly. Kevin understood that he needed some alone time and left.

The night was deep.

Leopold stood by the window, the cold wind causing his hair and thoughts to flutter.

The room was as silent as a tomb, so quiet he could hear his own heavy breathing. It felt like he wasthe only person left in the world.

He thought he didn't love Aurelia.

How could he love a woman who was full of schemes, cunning tricks, slippery like an eel? But whyhad that woman become his Achilles’ heel, his downfall?

When she left, it felt like his heart was hollowed out, only leaving behind a throbbing pain.

He pulled out his phone, tried to send Aurelia a message, but it failed.
