Chapter 459 Dishonorable Since Day One

It wasn’t eight in a thousand. It was eight percent.

Because of the full–width input period added at the end, it looked like an extra zero was included, making it barely distinguishable from a comma separator. It was hard to tell the difference without careful scrutiny, especially since Maverick had over two hundred degrees of presbyopia.

I knew it. How could Zachary possibly be that kind–hearted?

He had essentially dug a pit for her family.

Lysander’s heart had sunk to the lowest point.

Based on this interest rate, the annual interest alone would amount to one hundred and sixty thousand.

However, as she continued to look further, she felt as if all the blood in her body was rushing to her head.

The interest rate stated in the document was not written as “per annum“, but rather, it was indicated as “per month.”

Every month, a whopping interest of a hundred sixty thousand had to be repaid.

How could her family afford it?

If they couldn’t pay back the money, the interest would be compounded with the principal. In no time, the amount would skyrocket to astronomical figures.

Lysander felt a chill run through her entire body as she read.

Luckily, she had returned home that day and had chanced upon that contract.

If her parents continued to hide this form her, it would eventually become a bottomless pit. In the end, Lysander’s parents might be left with no other choice but to jump off a building.

Zachary Powell

Lysander was so infuriated that she felt like skinning him alive..

“Lysander…” Michelle was worried sick. “Are you all right?”

Lysander composed herself and said, “I’m going to the balcony to make a phone call.”

“Is it to Zachary? It’s quite late. He’s probably asleep by now.”

“He had to get up, even if he was asleep!”

Lysander went to the balcony, found Zachary’s number, and dialed it.

The response on the other end came swiftly, foregoing any formalities. The first words out of his mouth were, “Still not back together with Josiah?”

Lysander struggled to keep her voice down, fearing that any loud noise might worry her family. She managed to choke out, “Are you trying to drive us all to our graves?”

“Lysander, I gave you a deadline, and you’ve exceeded it

“Can you leave my family out of our disputes?”

“I was just trying to help you out here. Remember when you wanted to negotiate terms with Josiah but couldn’t replace a plausible excuse? He wouldn’t see you and you were left helpless. But look at this, the interest rate is so high, so you can’t possibly repay it on your own. This could be a perfect opportunity for you to ask Josiah for a loan. Isn’t that a valid reason to meet him? Then, you can take things from there, rekindle your old flame, and everything else should naturally fall into place, right?”

“You’re despicable.”

“You’ve known about my unscrupulous nature for quite some time now. If you ever decide to remarry Josiah, don’t forget to send me a thank–you gift, hahaha.”

“Do you really think I would beg Josiah for help?”

“Whether you choose to plead or not is up to you. I’m just waiting for the outcome.”

Lysander found herself at a loss for words.

“Go ahead, Lysander. With an interest of a hundred sixty thousand a month, that’s… about five thousand a day. I bet your dad’s pension isn’t even that high, right?”

“Zachary!”

Hahahaha!

Zachary’s arrogant laughter came from the other end of the phone.

Livid, Lysander hung up the call.

The Everhart family was also short on funds at the moment. She had just recently received over ten million from Howard. Asking for more now would not only be inappropriate, but it might even cause liquidity issues for Thorne Constructions and Energies.

Zachary had planned it perfectly, leaving her with no choice but to seek out Josiah.

Her fingers hovered over the name “Josiah” in her contact list for quite some time. After taking a deep breath, she finally dialed Josiah’s phone number.

Beep-

The call went through.

Beep beep-

However, he didn’t pick up.

After the call was automatically ended, Lysander let out a long sigh of relief before dialing again.

Still, no one answered.

She sent a message to Josiah on WhatsApp: Apologies for the intrusion, but there’s something I need to ask of you.” Could you please give me a call when you see this?

But after sending the message on WhatsApp for nearly half an hour, there was still no response.

After waiting for what seemed like forever, Lysander finally gave up completely.

Today was Tiffany’s birthday. She was probably still at her future father–in–law’s house, enjoying a meal and sipping coffee.

She wouldn’t have the time to pick up Lysander’s call.

Buzz-

Her cell phone vibrated. A call was coming in.

For a moment, Lysander thought she might have misjudged Josiah. But as she picked up her phone, Adrian’s name glaringly displayed on the screen made her reconsider.

The phone kept ringing.

She waited for a moment before finally answering, “Dr. Sutton? What brings you to call this late?”

“Sorry, did I interrupt your rest?”

“No, I haven’t slept yet. Is there something you need?”

“The vaccination card for White Coat seems to still be at your place, and it’s missing one shot. I thought I’d get it done while I’m at the vet. Are you home right now? Would it be okay if I swing by to pick it up?”

“I’m not home.”

“Where are you now? It’s quite late…” Adrian thought of her peculiar neighbor. “Did you go to Josiah’s place?”

“No, I’ve gone back to my parents‘ house.”

Adrian let out a sigh of relief. “I see.”

“Okay,” Lysander said, “Give me an address, and I’ll have an errand runner deliver it to you tomorrow.

“Okay.

“I’ve got some things to handle, so I’ll hang up now…”

“Wait a moment, Lysander,” Adrian said. “Your voice doesn’t sound quite right. Is something the matter?”

Lysander opened her mouth to speak but choked up.

Adrian’s voice took on a serious tone. “Did something really happen?

“Dr. Sutton, could I trouble you with something?”

“I’ve mentioned before, anytime you need me, just let me know.”

“I need some money. It’s kind of urgent.”

explanation.

“Sure,” Adrian agreed without a second thought–Only then did he remember to ask, “How much do you

need?”

Lysander thoughtfully replied, “Two million.”

This was no small sum of money, yet Adrian did not hesitate in the slightest. He simply stated, “Send me your account number.“

Lysander no longer harbored any romantic feelings for him, but she couldn’t help but be moved by such unreserved assistance. She quickly sent over an electronic IOU and promised, “I’m already preparing to take over Thorne Constructions and Energies. As soon as I start making money, I’ll definitely repay you as quickly as possible.”

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line.

“It doesn’t matter when you repay.” Adrian didn’t really care when Lysander would return the money. His voice trembled as he asked her, “What are you going to do in the future? Stay in the country and manage Thorne Constructions and Energies?”

Lysander responded softly, “From what we can see now, it seems to be the case.”

“So, you’re not planning on returning to Stounia for further studies? And are you also giving up on your medical career?” Adrian’s breath hitched, and after a moment, he added, “I’m not blaming you. I just don’t want to see all those years of your hard work go to waste.”

Lysander gave a reassuring smile and said, “I understand what you’re saying. However, I’ve already taken the Thorne family’s money, and there’s no one else in the family who can step up right now. I can’t just up and leave. At the very least, I need to oversee a transition period, replace a suitable person to take over, a

then step down.”

Adrian let out a sigh. “It seems you’ve truly made up your mind. When do you suppose you’ll officially take over?”

Lysander replied, “I’m not entirely sure, the company is still in the process of transition. But it shouldn’t take too long before we hear some news. Once the transition is over, someone will notify me. I plan to take this time to rest a bit and brush up on my management skills. Consider it as sharpening my tools before the battle.”

“In this regard, I’m afraid I can’t be of any help to you. Daph isn’t exactly an expert

Lysander had a clear understanding of herself. “Let me give it my best shot first.”

A minute later, she received a text message from her bank on her phone.

Two million had been deposited into her account.
