Chapter 500 Plead His Case

Lysander remained silent, lifting her gaze to the stars above..

Viewed within the mountains, the stars appeared vivid and bright, exuding an undeniable beauty.

“Actually, I’m not divorced yet.”

Lysander frowned. “That scm didn’t want to?”

Amelia laughed again. It was unclear whether she was laughing at Lysander’s innocence or at her own past foolishness. “Actually, that’s not the case. Ever since he used the excuse of taking me on a trip to sell me off to South East Aploth, he’s completely disappeared. Perhaps he was killed by his debtors. I can’t replace him, so naturally, I can’t get a divorce. South East Aploth is filled with corners far beyond the reach of laws. When I first realized I had ended up in the red–light district, I harbored some hope of escaping. Yet, each attempt ended in failure, and each beating I received was more brutal than the last. Eventually, after nearly being beaten to death, I resigned myself to my fate.”

Lysander saw the glimmer of tears in Amelia’s eyes, and she grew certain that this experience had left a deep and indelible scar on the latter. She lowered her gaze and comforted Amelia, “At least you’ve managed to escape now, which shows you never truly gave in.”

Amelia heaved a sigh. “I had no choice but to run. You wouldn’t understand the rules there. Even if I complied, there was no guarantee of a peaceful life till old age. So, of course, I had to flee. Fortunately, fate. was kind enough to present me with an opportunity to return home while I was accompanying a guest on a trip.

Despite Amelia’s nonchalant manner as she uttered those words, Lysander was certain the escape wasn’t as simple as Amelia described. Amelia plucked a leaf from a nearby flower tree, her heart still racing as she recalled the thrilling experience during the escape.

“I’ve done all sorts of jobs under those people, yet I didn’t manage to save a single penny. Since I’ve already escaped, there’s no way I’d willingly go back, even if it meant death. To my surprise, they actually pursued me. At that time, I made up my mind that if they truly caught up to me, I’d end my own life.”

Looking at Amelia, who was hiding behind her vibrant appearance, Lysander gradually lowered her guard. “So, it was then that Josiah helped you?”

“That’s right.” Amelia’s voice brimmed with gratitude as she spoke about Josiah. “Those people were involved in shady business practices. If it weren’t for Mr. Guerra, I might not have been able to escape.”

In her story, Amelia described Josiah as a hero who rescued her in perilous situations. Although this probably had something to do with her viewing him as a benefactor, Lysander reckoned the events were likely not far from the truth.

Lysander considered Josiah’s usual demeanor and then said to Amelia, “Josiah does have his moments of doing good deeds,”

“Indeed,” Amelia said, her eyes full of longing and aspiration. Therefore, how could I possibly behave like those pretentious and foolish women? Mr. Guerra has been my benefactor, and I sincerely hope that he can be with the one he truly loves. Only then would his kindness toward me not be in vain.”

For her, Josiah’s mere gesture had thoroughly changed her life. When she was imprisoned, Amelia once thought her life would never turn for the better.

Upon hearing that, Lysander gained clarity. “So, you’re here to plead his case?”

It seemed she understood the reason why Amelia would show up here.

“Of course not.” Amelia hastily clarified, fearing Lysander might misunderstand Josiah. “I came here to replace someone. Now that I’d finished what I needed to do, I was just about to leave. I genuinely just happened to run into you.”

Lysander believed Amelia to be telling the truth. Her empathy as a woman prompted her to ask, “Do you plan on staying in Skywatch forever? Have you ever considered living somewhere else?”

A flicker of uncertainty flashed in Amelia’s eyes, but she quickly shook her head and said, “Ms. Thorne, I appreciate your kindness, but I haven’t had much of an education. I had to start earning a living before I even finished compulsory education. There are many jobs l’im simply not qualified for, so I have no choice but to stick with what I know, Back then, when Mr. Guerra saved me, he even gave me some money. I did consider turning over a new leaf, but in the end, I came back to him, asking for his help to replace a job. Coincidentally, Skywatch was short–staffed, and only because of his influence did Mr. Sutton take me in. Don’t you think I’m rather self–deprecating?”

Lysander said. “This is your own life. If you think it’s good, then it’s good.”

Amelia herself was quite open–minded. While meticulously arranging the adornments on her manicured nails, she casually began discussing her own life. “I know you must pity me. However, as you just mentioned, everyone has their own way of living. True, Skywatch isn’t the most reputable place, but the patrons who can afford to enter are all influential figures. They wouldn’t dare to treat me too poorly. It’s better than most places, and I can earn money quickly, too. Up until this point in my life, I’ve learned to let go of what needed to be let go. Since Mr. Guerra has given me this opportunity, I’ll make the most of it. Once I’ve saved enough money, I should be able to live a peaceful and ordinary life.”

Amelia’s profession and background were worlds apart from Josiah’s, yet her gratitude toward him was genuinely heartfelt.

Upon hearing that, Lysander realized that Amelia’s words were heartfelt and not influenced by Josiah to speak in his favor. From the bottom of her heart, Lysander said, “In that case I wish you could live the life you desire sooner.

“Thank you.” Amelia smiled, her radiant expression tinged with a hint of melancholy. “I would like to offer you some advice, too. You have the power to live your life openly and honestly, unlike me. You have the right to choose whether or not to be with Mr. Guerra in the end. It’s all up to your heart’s desire.”

“Okay.”

Amelia parted her red lips and added, “By the way, Ms. Thome, I heard you’re a doctor and a rather remarkable one at that. I’m quite envious. Should I be addressing you as Dr. Thorne?”

Lysander corrected in a soft voice, paying, “That’s all in the past. After resigning, chances are I won’t be returning to the hospital.”

Quitting the medical profession was indeed a pity, but she had to repay her debt to the Thorne family. Once Lysander made a decision, she wouldn’t dwell on it too much. She simply said in an undertone, “Therefore, you can just call me Ms. Thorne.”

“All right.” Amelia propped her chin with one hand, sighing out of sheer boredom. “Sometimes, when I have nothing to do, I can’t help but think. If I had realized how harsh the world was when I was younger, perhaps I would have studied harder and wouldn’t have ended up like this.”

Lysander spoke in a leisurely manner. “How about I offer you a dose of regret?”

97%

Amelia chuckled. “Ms. Thorne, you may not be much of a talker, but chatting with you is far more entertaining. The one who has a similar name to you, on the other hand, seems to have some issues here.”

Amelia tapped her own head, pouting as she shook her head.

Lysander remained silent.

Suddenly, Amelia’s smile faded, and she turned serious. “Thank you for listening to me talk so much today. As a token of my gratitude, I have a little secret to share with you.”

As Amelia spoke, she leaned closer to Lysander, whispering in a volume only the two of them could hear, “Keep an eye on the foolish woman. Sometimes, the ones who seem the most innocent and harmless can be the most vicious when they bite.”
