"You..."

Charles slammed the gas pedal, his phone pressed to his ear. "Where are you?"

"Uh, we're on the road, heading to Noelle's place..."

"Forget the apartment. I need to get to Phoenix Tree Residence, Sean. Take me there!" Noelle finally snapped out of her daze, her eyes locking on Sean. "Take me to Phoenix Tree Residence."

Sean hesitated. "The thing is, over at Phoenix Tree Residence..."

"Sean, just get Noelle to Phoenix Tree Residence!" Charles barked, whipping the car around a sharp bend. "Hand Noelle the phone!"

Sean passed the phone to Noelle. "Noelle, Sean will drop you off. I'll be there soon!"

"Alright!" Noelle shivered, a wave of warmth rushing over her. "I'll be waiting, Charles! I'll wait forever if I have to!"

Noelle ended the call and passed the phone back to Sean. Sean shot her a quick look, his mind buzzing with silent gripes. Was his advice really that worthless compared to Charles's? If he had known, he would not have bothered getting involved. This whole situation had left him feeling down, especially since he was clueless about what had gone wrong. He could not shake the worry that Charles might think he had messed things up and would come after him later.

With those thoughts nagging at him, Sean floored the gas pedal.

Charles zoomed straight from the Hoffman family's old place to Phoenix Tree Residence. Sean and Noelle were already there when he arrived.

Charles stepped in, an icy vibe hanging around him, and spotted Sean lounging on the couch. He squinted and asked, "Where's Noelle?"

"Upstairs!" Sean pointed, a wave of relief washing over him as Charles walked in. "Honestly, I've got no clue what went down today. Noelle's been acting so weird. I knew something was up, so that's why I had to call you."

Charles gave a nod of thanks. "You've been through a lot today." He gave Sean's shoulder a reassuring pat. "Head on home. I'll check on Noelle."

"No way!" Sean protested, shaking his head. "When I got here, I noticed some folks lurking around outside. Looks like someone's still keeping tabs on you, huh?" Charles's lips tightened. "Alright, stick around then. If it gets too late, just crash here. There's plenty of guest rooms on both floors-pick any you like."

Charles muttered those words and headed upstairs without looking back. Sean rubbed his chin, catching the unusual edge of anxiety in Charles's demeanor. He could not help but make a tsk-tsk sound as he pulled out his phone to dial Reter.

who's at

"Hey Peter, can you replace out Charles's front door?"

"Right now?" Peter narrowed his eyes, sharp as daggers, and glanced at the clock. "Sean, are you out of your mind? Do you even know what time it is?"

Sean let out a goofy laugh. "Oops, it totally slipped my mind!"

"You're at Charles's place, aren't you?" Peter grasped the gravity of the situation. "I'll get Lareal on it."

After hanging up, Sean moved to the window, peering into the dark night. Most people would not notice much, but Sean and Charles were not most people. Whoever they were up against was just plain unlucky.

As he climbed the stairs step by

step, Charles finally reached the bedroom door and pushed it open Noelle looked forlorn on the floor her knees drawn up to her chest. She was such a tiny thing, and it just tugged at his heartstrings.

Charles's brow furrowed as he walked over and crouched down, his presence like a protective shadow over Noelle.
