Emmett had trouble sleeping that night. He and Isaac had retired early, but he simply lay in bed, tossing and turning, knowing that his muscles would be sore in the morning. The only person still awake was his father, whom he could hear sitting at the kitchen table. Every time he closed his eyes, he imagined himself in the sandpit, wrestling with Amy. And he had her pinned. But instead of letting her up, he got closer to her, closer, closer, until their lips almost met, and then- he couldn't imagine what happened next. He threw his covers off in frustration, put on a shirt, and quietly walked out into the kitchen, careful not to wake Isaac, who was sleeping peacefully.
"Dad?"
Darren looked up, looking slightly startled. "Emmett. I thought you were asleep."
"No. I can't." Emmett pulled up a chair beside his father's and sat down. "Dad, can I ask you a question?"
"Of course, son." Darren put down his papers and pencil and turned his attention to Emmett.
"Dad, when I first saw Amy, she was a scout fetching help. I didn't have any second thoughts about it. I fought the shadow serpents with her, and watched her defeat them single-handedly. I still didn't really think much about her. But after that night in the woods, when she-did that thing to help me-"
"It's called the Awakening," Darren filled in.
"Oh. Well, thanks. Anyways, after the Awakening, I started having-well-feelings towards her. I think-I think I'm in love. Is that weird?"
"Well, no, son. You see, there's this thing that happens sometimes after the Awakening. No one knows why it happens, but sometimes a Legend will feel attracted to the Legend that awakened their abilities if the giver's gender applies to the receiver's sexuality. Don't worry about it. It should go away in awhile. There's no set time of how long it last. Maybe you should talk to her about it."
"Okay. Thanks, Dad."
"I'm glad we had this talk, son." Emmett's father clapped his hand onto Emmett's shoulder. "I don't know why, but I sensed this would happen before it did."
