The Dawn of Malice -
Chapter 31
Serendell
The early morning mist clung to the forest, casting an ethereal glow over the camp as Ryker and Caerus emerged from their tents. They had been on the move for days, traveling through dense woods and rough terrain, their only means of transport being the trusty motorcycle Ryker had crafted with his own hands. But as Ryker approached the vehicle, he felt a knot of worry tightening in his stomach.
The motorcycle had been a labor of love, a masterpiece of artifice and engineering that he had spent countless hours perfecting. It had served them well on their journey so far, but he knew that traveling through the rugged wilderness had taken its toll on the machine.
Ryker frowned as he inspected the motorcycle, his keen eyes searching for any signs of trouble. He could hear the engine ticking, a sound that made his heart sink. It meant that something wasn’t right, and he cursed himself for not double-checking every component before setting out on their journey.
He tapped a few parts with his wrench, hoping to identify the source of the problem. The engine sputtered and shook, its mechanical heartbeat erratic. Ryker’s hands moved with practiced precision, adjusting the tension, and making quick calculations in his mind.
But just as they crested the top of a small hill, the motorcycle’s engine gave out completely, and it came to a shuddering stop. Ryker let out a frustrated sigh, his worry turning into a mix of irritation and disappointment.
“Caerus, hold on a moment,” Ryker called out to his friend, who was getting off the pillion seat behind Ryker. “Looks like we’ve hit a bit of a snag with the bike.”
Caerus turned – concern etched on his face. “Is something wrong?” he asked.
Ryker nodded his expression determined. “Yeah, it seems like I either measured something incorrectly or didn’t tension the engine parts enough,” he admitted. “But don’t worry, I can fix it. It might take some time, though.”
Caerus approached, placing a reassuring hand on Ryker’s shoulder. “Take all the time you need,” he said. “We’re in no rush, and I have faith in your abilities.”
Ryker smiled gratefully at his friend’s support. With renewed determination, he set to work, disassembling the engine, and carefully examining each part. The cold air nipped at his fingers, but he hardly noticed as he focused on the task at hand.
Ryker unrolled his leather-bound set of tools on the ground, various spanners, wrenches, vice grips, screwdrivers, and hammers lined the tool kit. Caerus’s eyes wandered to a strange tool Ryker pulled out from a separate bag. It was a spiral drill attached to a pistol-like grip with a glowing gem.
“What’s that Ryker?” Caerus asked inquisitively.
“This?” Ryker lifted the tool, “This is a pneumatic drill. It’s a gift from Ximena.”
“What does it do?”
Ryker grinned. “This pneumatic drill uses compressed air from this wind crystal.” He then pointed at the glowing crystal. “Inside the pneumatic drill, there is a mechanism that converts the high-pressure compressed air into a rapid back-and-forth motion with a piston and a cylinder arrangement. The piston is driven by compressed air and moves back and forth rapidly within the cylinder. The movement of the piston is what generates the mechanical force needed to operate the drill. And… You’re not listening are you?”
“Huh?” Caerus shook off his reverie, “Sorry Ryker, I know I was the one who asked but I don’t understand a word your saying.”
“Right…” Ryker awkwardly returned to his tools. His feelings hurt.
“But it’s amazing you understand all of this.” Caerus said, his tone apologetic, “You’ll have to forgive me for not being a great conversationalist, but I do hope you’ll teach me about this sometime.”
Ryker grinned, and his attitude changed. “Well… If you insist, I can teach you as I go.”
“I’d like that.” Caerus smiled. Together the two worked on the engine, Caerus assisting Ryker as his hands worked on the engine. Caerus jolting as Ryker operated with the pneumatic drill, it whirred to life forcing stubborn nuts and bolts to come loose.
As the sun rose higher in the sky, Ryker worked tirelessly, making adjustments, and repairs. Caerus kept him company, offering encouragement and occasionally lending a hand when needed. But at some point, Ryker threw his spanner to the ground and walked, filled with anger and disappointment at his inability to repair the stubborn engine.
“Hey,” Caerus said, “Let’s take a break for now.”
Ryker huffed as he walked away. The goggles atop his head misty with condensed sweat. The winter morning air was crisp as Ryker and Caerus took a break from their work on the motorcycle. As they wandered deeper into the forest, they came across a decrepit tower covered in moss and vines, standing tall and proud despite the wear of time.
“Look at that,” Ryker said, pointing at the tower. “I wonder what it used to be.”
Caerus glanced at the ancient structure and shrugged. “Who knows? Maybe it was once a lookout tower or a dwelling for someone long gone.”
They continued walking, and the conversation naturally shifted to the motorcycle. Ryker couldn’t help but voice his worries about the engine’s performance, afraid that it might not make it to Serendell.
“I just hope it holds up,” Ryker admitted, a tinge of concern in his voice. “We’re in the middle of nowhere, and if anything goes wrong with the motorcycle that I can’t fix, then it could mean trouble.”
Caerus nodded in understanding. “I trust your skills, Ryker. You’ve done an excellent job so far.”
Ryker appreciated the vote of confidence from his friend, but he couldn’t shake off his unease completely. Caerus, sensing his friend’s apprehension, decided to offer some insight that caught Ryker by surprise.
“You know, working on the motorcycle is a lot like using lifeblood as a Laresian,” Caerus mused. “Just like the heart pumps blood and lifeblood through the body to give it enhanced strength, the engine needs a steady flow of power to function properly.”
Ryker’s eyes lit up with realization. “You’re right! It’s like regulating the burst of fire into the engine.”
“Exactly,” Caerus said with a smile. “And just like a heart, it needs balance and precision to work efficiently.”
Ryker’s mind started racing with ideas. “What if we attach a carburetor to the motorcycle?” he suggested. “Most fuel-powered cars in Serendell use a carburetor to regulate the amount of air and fuel mixture going into the engine, ensuring a smoother and more controlled combustion. Likewise, if I built a carburetor to adjust the power going into the engine…”
Caerus raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the idea. “That could work,” he said. “It might take some effort to create and install, but if it improves the motorcycle’s performance, it would be worth it.”
Ryker’s excitement grew as he imagined the possibilities. “And we could modify it so that we can adjust it as needed, depending on the terrain and conditions.”
Caerus chuckled. “You are a genius when it comes to inventions, Ryker.”
Flushed with both pride and inspiration, Ryker grinned at his friend. “Let’s do it. With your insights and my artificer skills, I’m sure we can make it happen.”
As Caerus and Ryker returned to the broken-down motorcycle, Ryker pulled out a small notebook from his coat pocket and began making sketches of the carburetor.
“Luckily, as I was frantically packing my tools and materials,” Ryker said his voice excited, “I managed to pack a replica carburetor from my spare materials.”
Caerus simply smiled, knowing that he may not understand his friend, but he could appreciate his happiness and excitement. Finally, they reached their camp, Ryker immediately plopped himself on the cold ground and began working on his carburetor and engine. And after what felt like an eternity, Ryker’s hard work paid off. The engine purred to life once again, its sound smoother and more reassuring than ever. Ryker wiped the sweat from his brow and let out a triumphant cheer.
“We did it!” he exclaimed, beaming at Caerus.
Caerus grinned back – relief evident in his eyes. “Great job, Ryker. I knew you could do it.”
With the motorcycle running smoothly once again, the two friends continued on their journey, the forest enveloping them as they ventured deeper into the unknown. Ryker knew that there would be more challenges ahead, but he felt a newfound sense of confidence.
The motorcycle roared to life as Caerus and Ryker burst out of the shade of the towering evergreen trees that surrounded the outskirts of Serendell. The winter sun greeted them with its pale light, casting long shadows over the city that lay before them. Caerus’s eyes widened as he took in the sight, his breath catching in his throat at the imposing aura that Serendell exuded.
Compared to the vibrant beauty of Verdania, Serendell seemed to be a city of a different kind altogether. Caerus could only describe the city’s architecture as a stunning fusion of traditional stone structures and modern metal frameworks. The buildings were taller and more modern, crafted with a blend of stone and metal that spoke of engineering and innovation. Its skyline was adorned with copper antennas and lightning rods that reached up towards the sky, giving the city an almost otherworldly appearance.
As they approached the city gates, Caerus noticed that the streets were bustling with activity, but it wasn’t the sound of hooves and carriages that he was used to. Instead, there were metal contraptions on wheels, moving with a speed and precision that seemed almost magical. Ryker let out a hearty laugh as he saw the wonder on his friend’s face.
“They’re not carriages, Caerus,” Ryker said, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “They’re cars! Machines that run on engines and wheels, not pulled by horses like the cities by the border. Serendell is a hub for engineers, and their inventions are something to behold.”
Caerus couldn’t help but chuckle at his naivety. He had spent most of his life within the quiet and secluded walls of Liliosa, where all he knew were the hardships of busking in the streets and earning enough to make a meal for a day. The outside world was a marvel he had yet to explore fully.
As they rode through the bustling streets of Serendell, Caerus couldn’t help but be in awe of the city’s energy and innovation. Everywhere he looked, there were workshops and small stalls with engineers tinkering with their inventions, their minds filled with curiosity and creativity. The buildings seemed to pulse with life, each one a testament to the ingenuity and skill of its creator.
The noise of the city was a symphony of clanking metal, whirring gears, and the occasional blast of steam. It was a stark contrast to the serene silence of the Civic Athenaeum or the chattering pedestrians of Liliosa, but Caerus found himself strangely drawn to the chaos and excitement that surrounded him.
Ryker guided the motorcycle through the bustling streets, weaving expertly through the traffic of cars and people. Engineers who have managed to glimpse the motorcycle riding past were instantly stopped in their tracks, eyes wide with envy. Ryker proudly cackled at their discomfort as he revved his engine, the machine roaring as it made its way.
Caerus could feel the thrill of the ride coursing through his veins, the wind whipping against his face, and he couldn’t help but feel alive in this new and vibrant world. Situated in the heart of the kingdom, Caerus could see that Serendell was a melting pot of cultures, attracting people from all walks of life who seek to witness or contribute to its ever-evolving innovations.
“Caerus,” Ryker said eyes still focused on the road. “Look above.”
In addition to the cars and carriages in the streets, Caerus’s mouth dropped to see that there were other fantastic vehicles, soaring steam-powered airships, and gliders. Rumbling cable cars moved along the sides of buildings, whilst the people within busy themselves with newspapers and books.
As the motorcycle sped through the city, Caerus couldn’t help but smile. The adventure had only just begun, and he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. With Serendell as their new home base, he couldn’t wait to see where their adventure would lead them next that was until a voice screamed for the pair’s attention
“Stop!”
The sound of hooves pounded the streets of Serendell as two city guards gave chase to the two hooligans that dared use an unlicensed vehicle within city limits. These two, Caerus and Ryker, found themselves in a heart-pounding chase through the bustling streets. The city guards were relentless in their pursuit, demanding a license for their motorcycle as it was considered a “modified vehicle” within the city limits. Ryker’s determination to escape their clutches was evident as he skillfully maneuvered the motorcycle through the dense traffic.
“Damn, engineers!” Ryker screamed, “They must have complained to the city guards.”
“We have to lose them!” Caerus laughed nervously. “Go faster!”
As the guards on horseback closed in, Ryker’s face was a mix of concentration and adrenaline-fueled excitement. Caerus held on tight, his heart pounding in his chest as the wind whipped past them. He did not doubt Ryker’s abilities, but the situation was growing increasingly dangerous.
With each turn and twist through the crowded streets, the guards seemed to gain ground. Caerus knew they had to act quickly to escape. Drawing upon his strength, he spotted a stack of crates near the mouth of an alleyway. He didn’t have time to think twice as he reached out, muscles pulsing with lifeblood and eyes a glow in crimson light. With a sudden burst of force, he sent the crates tumbling onto the street.
The horses of the city guards were startled by the sudden obstacle, braying, and backing away from the chaotic mess. The riders struggled to regain control as they reined in their steeds, momentarily hindered by the makeshift barricade.
Seizing the opportunity, Ryker expertly steered the motorcycle into a narrow alleyway, leaving the frustrated guards behind. The cacophony of hooves and shouts echoed through the streets, but they had managed to outwit their pursuers – at least for the time being.
The alleyway was dimly lit, and the tight space made the chase more thrilling. Caerus held on tightly to Ryker as they weaved through the narrow passages, the motorcycle’s engine growling beneath them. The rush of adrenaline coursed through Caerus’s veins, exhilarating and terrifying all at once.
As they finally emerged from the maze of alleyways, they found themselves in a quieter part of the city, far from the guards’ reach. Ryker’s eyes sparkled with mischief and triumph, a grin spreading across his face. “That was close,” he said, laughing breathlessly.
Caerus couldn’t help but chuckle, feeling a surge of relief. “You’re an excellent driver, Ryker,” he admitted, patting his friend’s back.
Ryker’s laughter filled the air as they continued their way through the City of Serendell. Despite the thrilling chase, Caerus couldn’t shake off a sense of unease. He knew they couldn’t continue to evade the city guards forever, and the challenges they faced were far from over.
The City of Serendell buzzed with life as Caerus and Ryker rode their motorcycle through the bustling streets, nearly hitting a pedestrian as they burst through the alleyway. Tall buildings loomed over them, their metal frames glinting in the winter sunlight. Caerus marveled at the sight of the towering antennas and the ever-present hum of machinery that seemed to echo in every corner of the city.
As they veered off the main road, Caerus felt a sense of relief, hoping they could lose the pursuing guards in the labyrinthine alleyways. Ryker’s expert maneuvering led them into a narrow alley between two imposing buildings. Caerus held on tight, his heart pounding, as they descended a declining ramp, concealed from the sight of the city’s main thoroughfares.
The motorcycle’s engine roared as they gained speed, adrenaline coursing through their veins. Just as they reached the end of the ramp, Ryker skillfully turned off the engine, and they both pushed the motorcycle the rest of the way into a hidden machine shop.
The air inside the shop was thick with the scent of metal and oil. Caerus glanced around, impressed by the array of intricate machines and inventions scattered throughout the workshop. He knew that Ryker was to meet with a talented engineer friend of his, but he was left awestruck by so much machinery.
A petite young woman stood near a workbench, her back turned to them as she tinkered with a complex contraption. With a swift and skillful motion, she threw a wrench at Ryker, who caught it effortlessly in mid-air, a mischievous grin playing on his lips.
“Nice catch,” Caerus said, amused.
Ryker laughed, “Ximena always tests my reflexes when I come in here. Keeps me on my toes.”
The young woman turned to face them, and Caerus was struck by her vibrant aquamarine eyes that seemed to hold a spark of curiosity and mischief. Her dark hair was pulled back into a messy bun, and grease smudged her cheeks.
“Caerus, meet Ximena Kaledin Ortiz,” Ryker said with pride. “She’s the inspiration behind many of the machines and gadgets I have made in the Civic Athenaeum. Ximena, this is my good friend, Caerus.”
Ximena smiled warmly, “Don’t be so embarrassing Ryker,” Caerus shook her extended her hand firmly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Caerus. Any friend of Ryker’s is a friend of mine.”
“Likewise,” Caerus replied, feeling the slick sensation of oil on his palms.
As they chatted, the sound of commotion echoed from the streets outside, signaling that the guards were still searching for them. Caerus knew they couldn’t stay hidden for long. With a determined glint in her eye, Ximena gestured for them to follow her.
“We’ll hide the motorcycle in the secret compartment behind the workshop,” she said. “It’ll be safe there until things cool down.”
“Let’s go grab our bags and some of my tools,” Ryker said exhausted. “Ximena’s got a room upstairs with soft cushions and a crystal heater.”
Caerus smiled warmly, not understanding what Ryker meant by a crystal heater. He went to the motorcycle, carefully removing their saddlebags and rucksacks while Ryker pushed the motorcycle toward an alcove. Together, the trio worked swiftly and efficiently to conceal the motorcycle. Caerus admired Ximena’s expertise as she activated the hidden mechanisms that shielded the machine from view.
Once their escape route was secured, Caerus turned to Ximena and Ryker. “Thank you both for helping me. I can’t express how grateful I am.”
Ryker grinned, giving him a playful nudge. “Hey, what are friends for? We stick together, no matter what.”
Ximena nodded in agreement. “I may not know you but since Ryker has vetoed you then I’ll agree to keep you safe, Caerus. And when the time comes, we’ll face whatever challenges lie ahead, together.”
