"Huh, you sound like you're doing much better."

Sherman's exhaustion disappeared completely as soon as he heard Rita's voice. He leaned back into his office chair. Even though he knew Rita would be safe with her father, Sherman had been on edge until he heard her voice.

At that moment, his heart felt much lighter.

"Yeah, I'm much better now but still a bit weak. The doctor wants me to stay in the hospital for a few more days. I'll be moving back home after I get discharged," Rita reported casually as if chatting with an old friend.

Sherman's eyes suddenly snapped wide open. "Back home? To that home? Are you going to live with Karen and Sadie?" he asked.

As soon as Rita heard his reaction, she knew that the events of that day were likely connected to that mother-daughter duo.

"So, this incident had something to do with Karen?" asked Rita.

Sherman became puzzled. "Didn't your father tell you about it? I told him everything and reminded him to tell you when you wake up." "Huh." Rita was not surprised. "He's probably afraid that I'll kick up a fuss at home if I found out."

Although she was touched by her father taking care of her closely these past few days, the thought that he had concealed the true culprit who had harmed her for the sake of so-called family harmony made he feel cold.

Sherman immediately understood the intricacies of the situation when he heard Rita's scoff. Vince had always been the decisive type when it came to public matters, but when it came to family matters, he seemed to be very indecisive.

A few words whispered in his ear would often immediately change his attitude, even when it came to matters concerning his biological daughter.

"You already guessed Karen was involved in the incident, so why do you still want to go back home? What if she comes after you again? You might not be so lucky next time, "Said Sherman with a frown. He genuinely believed that Rita should not return to a dangerous place like that.

However, Rita sternly told him, "I have to go. I have to take this chance and expose that woman's true colors. I need to make Dad see the kind of person she really is. She pretends to care for me in front of others, but in reality? She's harmed me time and time again, and this

time, it was only by luck that's

I

escaped. I don't know how much luck I have left to deal with these things... Sherman, I really need to thank you. If it weren't for you..."

She sighed, and Sherman did not know how to convince her not to go back. He understood that Rita's choice might be the most correct one for her. She had to rely on her own abilities and methods to expose Karen's true colors.

Subconsciously, he could not bear to see her do this alone, but what could he do? It was not like he was her boyfriend or husband.

"Take care of yourself. Nothing is

more important than your own well-being." Sherman sighed as well. He knew how stubborn Rita could be. No matter how much he tried to persuade her, it would not work. All he could do was remind her to prioritize her safety.

Rita chuckled softly. "I'll treat you to a meal after I'm discharged from the hospital, as a thank you."

"What? Do you not know how quickly I rushed to the hotel to rescue you? And you want to thank me with just one meal?" teased Sherman.
