My face is beet red when we finish our second shower. I am sitting in the living room yet again waiting on my best friend, this time; I am far from Dante. He laughs at me teasingly. Ding Dong! We both stand up to answer the door. Amber, my best friend, doesn’t even acknowledge Dante when we open the door as she flies right in my arms. “I missed you so much; oh, you smell good, is that peach?”

Dante clears his throat. She eyes him up and down. “You’re right. He is sex on legs.” She whispers. I look over at Dante, and he is just frowning at her comment. “Come sit; we have a lot to talk about.” I lead Amber to the main living room (not the one where Dante fucked my brains out). I can hear Dante chuckling behind me when I turn right instead of left. The three of us are in the living room; I look over at Dante.

“Dante, do you want some-.” He gets up. “I got it. What does your friend drink?” He knows her name but doesn’t even address her by it. “My name is Amber, and I would like some whiskey on the rocks, please.” Dante’s eye twitches, and he opens his mouth to say something, but I quickly step in. “How about I help you?”

I grab his hand and drag him into the kitchen. “What is the matter with you?” He doesn’t say anything, pushes me against the counter, and kisses me deeply. “Nothing, I just don’t like her.” He says after pulling away. I grab the glasses putting ice in them. Dante grabs the whiskey, and we both return to the living room. “Thank you; I will get straight to the point.

Her biological parents are friends of my parents, and I guess just like you, I was assigned to watch her from when we were kids until now.” She gulps her drink and points the finger at Dante. “If I knew who you were, I wouldn’t have pushed her into your bed. I am going to let you know right now, stay away from Naila. I don’t care if she is your mate or not; you cannot be with her.” Dante rolls his eyes at her.

“That is not your place to say, she belongs by my side, and there is nothing you or anyone can do about it. She will be safe in my care.” Dante and Amber are glaring at each other, so I decide to speak up. “Amber, you are a demon too? I had no idea; why was this kept from me?” Dante snorts, “She is a lower demon, not sure what Xavier thought when he assigned her to you. If you had gotten attacked by one of Draco’s men, I doubt she would have been able to help you.”

Amber grits her teeth and looks down. “Dante, Amber is my friend; just because she is weaker than you doesn’t mean you can talk about her like that; I won’t stand for it.” He chugs his drink and goes into the kitchen. I look over at Amber. “Why did you rile him up?” I sit next to her and rub her shoulders. “He isn’t right for you Nils, don’t get distracted by his looks or smooth words. Demons like Him are no good.”

I cock my head to the side. “What do you mean ‘demons like him’?” She shakes her head. “If he even cares for you in the slightest, he will tell you; it’s not my place to say, I’m just a lower demon.” I sigh. “I’ll go ask him to apologize.” She laughs dryly. “He won’t do it; he is too mighty for that.” I head to the kitchen to see Dante balling his fists. “What the hell Dante? What if I were a lower demon, would have spoken to me the same way?”

He doesn’t respond. “I am talking to you.” I wave my hand in front of his face. “Naila, don’t ask stupid questions; what else does she want? If she tries to take you out of this house, I’ll throw her in the basement with Marco.” I take a step back. “Why are you this way? Whatever don’t answer that. It was probably a stupid question.” I storm out of the kitchen and return to Amber. “So what now? Are you going to convince me to leave?”

She stands up and shakes her head. “No, for now, I think I will head home. I’ll text you later.” She seemed to be planning something. I walk her to the door. “Be careful; I’ll see you soon?” She nods, hugs me, and walks out the door. He didn’t even see her off. Angry, I head back into the kitchen to look for Dante. I replace him sitting at the table, having another drink. “Come to scold me some more?”

He looks at me with empty eyes. What the hell is wrong with him? “Amber left, so you don’t have to worry about her prying me out of your grasp.” I pour myself a drink and head back to the living room. After about 20 minutes, Dante appears. “I’m going to have another talk with our vampire roommate, stay here, and Naila. I swear if you try to sneak in the basement….” Why does he look so mad? Did meeting Amber flip something, or is this the real Dante?

I walk up to him and kiss him, wrapping my arms around him. He responds to my kiss briefly but pushes me back, holding my waist. His face softens. “Naila, I’m not mad at you. I am mad at the situation; your little friend was right. I am the worst choice for a mate. But what’s done is done. I knew it from the moment I met you, but I would have done whatever I had to do to have you. And now that I have you, I don’t want to scare you away, there are ways that I do things, and I don’t want to scare you off by you witnessing them.”

I think for a bit, replaceing my resolve, I give him my response. “I don’t think you could scare me off; I want to come with you. I know you won’t let anything happen to me, and I also know that you won’t lose control if Marco tries something because I will be there.” I inhale and then exhale deeply. “Take me to your basement.”
