THE DEVIL HERSELF -
Chapter 55
**Two Months Later**
Diego had finally been discharged from the hospital. His recovery had been slow and painful, but with Scarlet's unwavering support and love, he had pulled through. The Clan was starting to return to a semblance of normalcy. Everyone was settling back into their routines, and life was beginning to feel stable again. But not for Dracula. Every day he saw Scarlet and Diego together, his heart twisted with jealousy and pain. He couldn't reconcile the fact that Scarlet had chosen Diego over him. It gnawed at him incessantly, poisoning his thoughts and darkening his mood.
Today, Dracula had decided he couldn't endure it any longer. He had devised a plan to get rid of Diego once and for all. In the dead of night, he sneaked into the garage where Diego's car was parked. He had learned enough about cars over the years to know how to tamper with the brakes. His hands shook as he worked, but his resolve was firm. He carefully cut the brake lines, ensuring it would look like a tragic accident rather than sabotage. When he was done, he stood back, breathing heavily. The deed was done. All that remained was for Diego to take the car out and meet his fate.
The next morning, Scarlet was rushing around the Clan's headquarters. She had an important meeting in town and was running late. "Where are my keys?" she muttered, searching frantically. A guard informed her that her car wasn't ready yet. "Great, just great," she fumed. In a hurry, she grabbed the keys to Diego's car instead. She called out to Diego, "I'm borrowing your car, love! I'll be back soon!" Diego waved her off, absorbed in a conversation with another Clan member. Unbeknownst to her, Dracula watched from the shadows, his heart skipping a beat when he realized Scarlet was taking Diego's car. His plan had just taken an unexpected turn.
**Police Department**
Inspector Isabella had been working tirelessly on the case that had consumed her for months. Her office was cluttered with files and evidence, and she barely noticed the passing of time. Suddenly, her phone rang. She picked it up, her eyes narrowing as she listened to the caller. "Are you sure?" she asked, her tone serious. The person on the other end confirmed the intel. "I'll be there right away," she said, hanging up.
She grabbed her keys and rushed out of the office, her mind racing with the new information. She jumped into her Jeep and sped off, her focus entirely on the task at hand.
As Scarlet drove Diego's car, she noticed it was behaving strangely. The steering felt loose, and when she tried to brake lightly, nothing happened. Panic set in. The car was over-speeding, and she couldn't stop it. She fought to maintain control, but it was a losing battle. At the same time, Isabella experienced similar issues with her Jeep. It too was over-speeding and unresponsive to her attempts to slow it down.
The two cars barreled towards each other on a narrow, winding road. Both women fought desperately to avert disaster, but fate had other plans. The cars collided head-on with a deafening crash, the force of the impact sending both vehicles spinning. The sound of metal twisting and glass shattering filled the air.
Scarlet, disoriented and covered in blood, managed to stagger out of the wreckage. Her body screamed in pain, but she forced herself to move. She saw Isabella unconscious in her Jeep. With the last of her strength, Scarlet pulled Isabella from the vehicle, dragging her to safety just as the cars exploded behind them. The blast threw both women into a nearby river, their bodies disappearing beneath the water. The explosion had been so intense that their faces were unrecognizable, and their identical clothing made it impossible to tell them apart.
**Back at the Clan Headquarters**
Dracula walked into a bar, hoping to replace some solace in a drink. He was surprised to see Diego there, sipping whiskey and chatting with a bartender. Panic gripped Dracula's heart. "Diego, what are you doing here?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
Diego looked at him, puzzled. "Just having a drink. Why?"
Dracula's mind raced. "Who took your car this morning?"
Diego frowned. "Scarlet did. She had something important to do in town."
Dracula's world crumbled. He tried calling Scarlet, but there was no response. His hands shook as he dialed her number repeatedly, each failed attempt adding to his growing panic.
Suddenly, the news on the bar's television caught his attention. "Breaking News: A tragic accident has occurred on the outskirts of town. Two cars collided head-on, resulting in a massive explosion. Authorities are asking the families of the victims to come forward to help identify the bodies, which are currently unidentifiable due to the extent of the injuries and fire."
Dracula's knees buckled. "No, no, no..." he whispered, his eyes glued to the screen. Diego looked up, concern etched on his face. "What's wrong?"
"It's Scarlet," Dracula choked out. "She was in an accident."
Diego's face paled. "What? No, that can't be. She... she just took my car..."
Dracula grabbed Diego's arm. "We need to go. Now."
They rushed to the accident scene, their hearts pounding with fear and dread. When they arrived, the devastation was overwhelming. The wreckage was barely recognizable as vehicles. Firefighters and paramedics were working frantically, but it was clear there were no survivors to save.
Dracula and Diego were directed to the makeshift morgue where the bodies had been taken. The sight was too much for Dracula. His legs gave way, and he fell to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably. Diego stood in stunned silence, his mind refusing to process what his eyes were seeing.

As they waited for the authorities to address them, Dracula replayed the events leading up to this moment. He had never intended for Scarlet to get hurt. It was supposed to be Diego in that car. His plan had backfired in the worst possible way. Guilt and regret consumed him.
**Later That Evening**
Back at the Clan's headquarters, news of the accident had spread. The atmosphere was thick with grief and disbelief. Clan members whispered among themselves, trying to make sense of the tragedy. Gloria and Elias were particularly devastated. Gloria clutched a photograph of Scarlet, her hands shaking. Elias stood by her side, his face a mask of sorrow.
"What will we do now?" Elias asked, his voice breaking.
Gloria shook her head. "We have to stay strong, for Scarlet and for the Clan. But it won't be easy."
As the evening wore on, Dracula sat alone in his room, tormented by his actions. He had wanted Scarlet's love, but now he had lost her forever. The realization that he was responsible for her death was a burden he knew he would carry for the rest of his life.
Meanwhile, in another part of the city, Isabella's family was informed of her fate. Her colleagues at the police department were stunned by the news. They had lost a dedicated and brave officer. Inspector Jordan, who had orchestrated the theft of Isabella's work, felt a pang of guilt. He had wanted to outshine her, but now she was gone, and any victory he might have gained felt hallow.

# In the Morgue
The morgue was cold and sterile, the air thick with the faint smell of disinfectant and decay. The fluorescent lights cast a harsh, unflattering glow over the room, making the pale bodies on the metal tables appear even more lifeless. John, the morgue attendant, had worked there for years and had seen his fair share of bodies. Today, he was tasked with cleaning up after the latest batch of arrivals.
He moved methodically from one body to the next, his mind wandering as he performed the routine task. As he reached the last table, something caught his eye. The body on the slab twitched. John blinked, thinking it was a trick of the light, but then he saw it again a faint, almost imperceptible movement.
His heart began to race as he leaned in closer, placing a hand over the body's wrist. He felt a weak, fluttering pulse. "Oh my God," he whispered, his voice trembling. He immediately grabbed his phone and dialed the police.

"Police department, what is your emergency?" came the calm voice on the other end.
"This is John from the city morgue. One of the bodies here... she's alive!"
Who made out alive???
