Chapter 28 Clumsy Means, but Effective
As soon as Brendon left, Shannon walked up to Ranita, chin held high and voice sweetly cooing,“Ranita, what a coincidence! I never thought that Brendon and I would run into you on our datetoday."
Unfortunately for Shannon, Ranita wasn't buying it.
“Shannon, who you're dating has nothing to do with me,” she replied coolly. Shannon immediatelylooked at her with a hurt expression. "Ranita, did I do something to upset you?"
Ha! Shannon always managed to get on her nerves.
"Ranita, don't be mad at me! If there's anything that bothers you about me, just tell me and I'llchange it! Brendon said that your personality is great and your temper is good too. He wants us toget along!"
Suppressing her anger towards Shannon's inability to understand human speech properly, Ranitareplied coldly, "Haha... look at yourself - coming over here all pitiful then acting like the victimagain! Miss Murphy, please leave before I end up bullying you later.”
Shannon's eyes welled up with tears as she saw the untouched red wine sitting by their table. Shequickly poured two glasses of wine - one for herself and one for Ranita - apologizing profusely, “I'msorry Ranita! It was my fault; please accept my apology..."
Without waiting for an answer from Ranita though, Shannon slammed her glass against hers, causing the contents of both glasses spilling onto them both. Ranita reflexively tried blocking it butbefore she could refuse, the red liquid had already spilled onto Shannon's chest.
The glass shattered into pieces, and in panic, Shannon stepped on those shards causing herself falloff from chair.
“Ranita!! What are you doing?!" At this moment, Brendon's cold voice rang out, making the womenshiver involuntarily.
"Shannon, you okay?" he asked while helping her put his coat around her shoulders.
“Brendon, I... I'm fine," she said through teary eyes, pouting slightly, "It was my fault. Ranita is angrybecause of me. I wanted to apologize but things got worse instead.”
Brendon went next door, took his coat back, and turned back towards Ranita, "You shouldn't havelaid hands on her. You should apologize now!"
"Brendon, don't be angry. Ranita probably didn't mean it." pleaded Shannon, hiding behind him inhis oversized suit jacket. Her face was flushed pink with embarrassment while misty-eyed pleadinghim not to be mad at Ranita anymore.
But even someone as calm-natured as Ranita couldn't take being pushed around any longer. Shesnapped irritably, "I didn't lay hands on anyone nor will I apologize either!”
“Ranita!" Brendon's eyes were dark and disappointed as he stared at her. "This is the second time!"“Brendon, I didn't do it!" Ranita defended herself. "I didn't even touch the glass..."
"Apologize, Ranita!" Brendon's voice was low and cold, indicating that he was truly angry.
Ranita felt her heart sink to the bottom of a pit.
Shannon's tactics were crude but effective.
"Brendon, I won't apologize for something I didn't do!"
"Ranita!" Brendon's anger boiled over as he glared at her with icy eyes that turned her heart into ablock of ice.
The atmosphere became tense and hostile.
"Brendon, Ranita definitely didn't mean to do it! It must be because I made her angry... it's all myfault... Brendon, don't fight because of me. It makes me so sad...” Shannon spoke softly as sheleaned into Brendon's embrace and occupied his broad chest. She then looked up at Ranita with asmile that was full of provocation and pride in her eyebrows and eyes.
It seemed like she was saying: See? Brendon prefers me!
