Chapter 557 A Pragmatist Tries Romance

Jennifer lowered her head and mulled over the issues that Gwendolyn had raised.

Indeed, it sounded like a colossal challenge.

Having gotten used to her relaxed lifestyle, she expected to face some difficulties in acclimatizing to amore hectic schedule,

Still, Jennifer loved Honor of Kings and always felt excitement coursing through her veins when shewatched professional gamers playing it.

That was why she would gladly take on the role.

I’ll take it slower in my graduate studies. If I can’t make it this year, there’s always next year.

After thinking things through, Jennifer replied determinedly, “I’d like to give it a shot, Gwendolyn. I’ll trymy best to accomplish everything you’ve laid out.”

“All right. I trust you.”

Gwendolyn gently patted her face before suggesting, “Why don’t you stay here and familiarize yourselfwith the surroundings? I need to discuss the investment agreement with some founders of the club. And don’t worry about Treyton; I’ll talk to him on your behalf.”

Jennifer smiled and said, “Thank you, Gwendolyn.”

“Don’t mention it.”

Meanwhile, after spending some time at Mossey Corporation’s offices in Fairlake, Kieran had becomea competent worker across all tasks which Inez had assigned to him.

While he was a medical genius, his intelligence spanned further than the bounds of his field.

Lack of interest had held him back from trying new things. If he had decided to go into business, hecould have joined the ranks of the industry’s most talented CEOS.

Out of habit, Inez often glanced at Kieran while he was engrossed in his work.

Having such eye candy nearby certainly lifted her mood.

During one of Inez’s ogling sessions, Kieran’s furious typing abruptly stopped as he completed yetanother document efficiently.

He turned to Inez, who hastily averted her gaze and pretended to be staring at her computer.

Kieran, blissfully unaware of her staring, asked seriously, “May I get off work earlier today, Ms.Mossey? I have some personal matters to attend to.”

Inez replied, “Have you completed all the work I’ve assigned to you today?”

He nodded in affirmation. “I’ve e–mailed everything to you for

“Oh, okay.”

Inez lowered her lashes, feeling rather crestfallen.your review.”

It appeared that her presence was not included in his request to get off work early.

These days, they maintained the professional relationship between a boss and her secretary at work.

Only after working hours did they address the other facet of their relationship–a couple who wasengaged.

While there was nothing she could do about their forced engagement, it did not mean that Inez hadforgiven him.

He swore he would woo me for an entire year and not a day less. If those are nothing but emptypromises, then Kieran’s not a decent man. That’s how I can test the sincerity of his feelings toward me.

She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she did not notice Kieran approaching her desk.

Inez quickly snapped out of her musings and feigned nonchalance. “Why are you in a rush to get offwork today, Mr. Kieran? Where are you going?”

Instead of answering her question, he rounded her desk and stopped when he was directly in front ofher. Then, he leaned closer to her and caged her in with the help of her armrests, which brought hisface within inches of hers.

Their proximity caused Inez’s heart to skip a beat. She clung to her nerves and demanded, “What areyou doing? Who taught you to ignore your boss‘ question?”

Kieran smirked and asked, “Are you asking me about my after–work activities as a boss or a fiancée,Ms. Mossey?”

Though his tone sounded as cold as ever, his expression took on a sexier, more amorous edge.

Kieran was still studying romance movies diligently and almost knew their content like the back of hishand.

His work paid off. Inez could see a marked improvement in his flirting skills.

She blinked nervously but met his gaze head–on. “Does it make a difference whether I’m asking as aboss or your fiancée?”

“Of course.”

Kieran recalled the pickup lines he had seen in the movies, and his smirk widened. He drawled, “Ifyou’re asking as a boss, I would tell you that my after–work activities are private matters, which arenone of your business. However, as a fiancée, you have every right to know my personal schedule, andI will absolutely tell you everything I’m up to, down to the minute.”

“That’s some lip you’ve got on you. Where are you learning these lines from? You’re getting morebrazen.” Despite her grumbling, her expression implied otherwise.

Kieran ignored her words and repeated his question. “So, is Ms. Mossey or Inez asking about myschedule?”

Inez responded sternly, “We’re in the office now. Before you officially get off work, you’re still mysecretary, so I’m asking you as a boss. On that note, shouldn’t employees be obliged to answer theirbosses truthfully?”

Kieran’s brows creased briefly with disappointment. He straightened up and said in an equally serious

tone, “I disagree. Anything outside of work qualifies as private matters. I don’t think it’s appropriate toinform you about them, Ms. Mossey.”

As Inez struggled to muster a response, she looked up and noticed Kieran headed for the office door.

“Stay there.”

Kieran obediently stopped in his tracks but did not turn around.

Despite their engagement, Inez had never called him anything but “Mr. Kieran,” even on their dates, which felt distant to him.

Inez continued, “Those are your private matters, but you’re asking to end work early to attend to them. You should at least give your boss a general idea of what you’re doing.”

He replied vaguely, “I’m going on a date with a woman.”

With a woman? He didn’t say it was with me. Who is he seeing?

Displeasure and other confusing emotions filled Inez’s heart. She muttered, “Who are you dating?”

Kieran remained silent. His broad back gave off a frosty air.

“You know what to do if you want to know my schedule.”

Desire and pride warred in Inez’s mind. Eventually, she conceded and said, “Fine. I’m asking you asyour fiancée, Mr. Kieran. Which fine lady are you dating today after requesting an early time off?”

Satisfied with her response, Kieran turned and walked toward Inez, caging her in as before. “Not just afine lady; she’s nothing short of a goddess. My date is my fiancée. It’s your birthday today. Did youforget?”

Inez was stunned.

She did not like celebrating birthdays and had indeed forgotten about her birthday.

“How do you know my birthday? Did my mom tell you?”

Kieran admitted openly, “Mrs. Mossey adores me and is trying her best to marry us off. Plus, backwhen you were pursuing me, you used to memorize my birthday and phone number, so it’s my turn todo the same.”

Inez’s heart fluttered. It was impossible to resist Kieran’s impeccable looks and flirtatious behavior.

While she remained silent, Kieran took the initiative to switch off her computer. “I’ve told Mrs. Mosseyabout our plans today. We’re not joining them for dinner or going home tonight.”

He held her hand and continued, “Let’s go, Inez. We still have two hours till work officially ends. Justenough time to catch a movie.”

Inez allowed him to lead her to her feet. She only remembered one thing he had mentioned earlier.“What do you mean we’re not going home tonight?”

He packed her bags quietly and did not reply.

Flustered, Inez stammered, “Y–You can’t be thinking of bringing me to s–some h–hotel, right?”

To her horror, Kieran did not refute her suspicions and said, “We’re all adults here and are engaged.Doesn’t dating at our age entail dates, meals, and sleeping together? What other agenda can therebe?”

Inez was rendered speechless.

After hearing those words, anyone else would have labeled Kieran a pervert if they did not know hispersonality any better.

No amount of romance movies could displace the pragmatic soul that resided within him.
