The Ex and Her Riches
Chapter 741

Chapter 741

Knowing that Charles was merely giving him a chance to defuse the tension, Isaac said, “It’s Whitney’sfirst day at work today, so I think she can be excused for not knowing the rules around here. We’lldecide if we should fire her after her probation period.”

Charles’ expression eased up right away. “Since you’re interceding on her behalf, this should serve asa warning. If I ever catch her slacking again, she’ll be fired.”

“Noted.” Isaac lowered his head slightly. Seeing that Whitney was remaining silent, he shot her a lookand reminded her, “Please thank Mr. Newton!”

“Thank you, Mr. Newton.” Whitney bowed.

Charles stared at her sternly before turning around to leave.

The employees breathed a sigh of relief after Isaac and Charles entered the elevator.

At that point, Lana was sobbing and wiping her tears away with a piece of tissue.

Those who were close to her went up to console her hurriedly.

Lana sobbed and protested, “This is all your fault, Whitney! Why did you ask me so many questions?Because of you, I was lectured by Mr. Newton and almost lost my job! The company is surely deductingmy salary because of this incident. Mr. Newton now has a bad impression of me!”

Whitney felt remorseful because she knew it was her fault. “I’m sorry. If your salary gets deducted, I’llcompensate you with the money I get from my internship next month.”

Lana felt slightly better. However, she thought Whitney was a pushover and refused to let the matterslide. “How about the lecture I got from Mr. Newton? I suffered mentally. How are you going to make itup to me? Do you think you’re better than everyone else because Isaac sided with you?”

Whitney just turned around and sat at her desk. Instead of arguing, she continued working.

Lana became angrier when Whitney ignored her. “What’s with your attitude? I was answering yourquestions out of kindness, and I got scolded as a consequence. Did you think you could solve theproblem with your insincere apology?”

Whitney heaved a sigh in response. I apologized to her sincerely, but she thought otherwise. There’sno point in explaining myself further.

Whitney’s silent treatment infuriated the group of employees on Lana’s side.

Hence, they started making assumptions about her publicly.

“It seems like someone here is an attention seeker.”

“That’s what I thought! She blurted a bunch of rubbish when Mr. Newton wasn’t even asking her aquestion.”

“Today’s her first day as an intern, right? Why was Isaac helping her? Is she Isaac’s fling?”

“I think that’s possible. Isaac is Mr. Newton’s trusted aide. He has been with Mr. Newton ever since Mr.Newton got promoted. If Whitney is hooking up with Isaac, she’ll have an easy time in the company!”

The group was envious and jealous of Whitney.

However, they were thrilled when they realized that Whitney had probably been blacklisted afterreceiving a public lecture from Charles.

Evidently, those sarcastic remarks struck a nerve. Whitney stopped typing abruptly and turned around.“I’m sorry Lana got reprimanded because of me. However, there’s nothing fishy going on between Mr.Turner and me. Please stop spreading such vile lies,” she said calmly.

Lana was filled with contempt when she heard that. “Why are you so pretentious? Did you think Isaacwould help every Tom, Dick, and Harry? You’re merely an intern on your first day of work. If you weren’tclose with him, why would he back you up right in front of Mr. Newton?”

“That’s right! I remember that she only got into the company because Isaac made some arrangementswith the HR department,” someone chimed in.

“What? Is that so? Could it be that she’s Isaac’s sugar baby?”

Not only did the discussion not stop, but the remarks became even more ridiculous.

Whitney couldn’t be bothered to entertain those people, so she continued completing her tasks.

At that moment, everyone in the office was mocking, berating, and shooting envious looks at her.

“Whitney!” Isaac, who had left with Charles in the elevator not long ago, had returned and made it clearwho he was looking for.

Right away, everyone in the office went silent.

“Yes?” Whitney lifted her head.

“Keep your belongings and come with me.”

Whitney froze momentarily and replied, “I’m not done with my work, though.”

“It’s your first day, so it’s understandable. Hurry! It’s urgent.”

Left without an option, Whitney saved her incomplete files, shut her computer down, and left with Isaac.

Isaac let her lead the way and warned the other employees, “Put more energy on your work and stopmeddling in others’ personal matters. Mr. Newton hates employees who are unprofessional. If Mr.

Newton replaces out what you guys were talking about, all of you will get the boot.”

As soon as those words fell, the employees tucked their heads into their shoulders.

The moment Isaac left, however, they were at it again.

“Well, we were making assumptions just a moment ago, and Isaac had proven us right straightaway. He’s so protective of the greenhorn.”

“Why is she so lucky? Is it because of her good looks? I bet she’s a flirty woman!”

A fastidious but incompetent female employee rolled her eyes and remarked, “So what if she’s hookingup with Isaac? If she’s that incredible, she should go after Mr. Newton! I heard that Mr. Newton is stillsingle. He’s a real rich heir of every girl’s dream. Who knows? Perhaps he might fancy me one day!”

With that, the woman buried her face in her hands and posed seductively.

With that, the woman buried her face in her hands and posed seductively.

The group dampened her spirit mercilessly by saying, “Oh, please! You’re not even as pretty asWhitney!”

A few minutes after Whitney left, she had become the common enemy of all the gossipy femaleemployees in the department.

Just like that, she became public enemy number one.

When Whitney and Isaac were in the elevator, she had her head hung low in dejection.

“Ignore them, Mrs. Newton. Those women like to gossip. If you need help, feel free to ask me. I’ll surelyhelp you out,” Isaac consoled her.

“Thank you, but I’m merely an intern at NR Group. I’m not Mrs. Newton.”

“Uh…” Isaac was tongue-tied.

When the elevator arrived in the basement, Isaac bowed and gestured for her to step out of theelevator. “You know Mr. Newton’s car, right? He’s waiting for you in the car.”

“Okay. Thank you.” Whitney exited the elevator and searched for Charles’ car in the undergroundparking.

Charles’ luxury car stood out from the rest, so she found it rather easily.

She stood in front of the car door and hesitated for a moment. After that, she decided to take a seat atthe back.

Right then, the passenger seat window was rolled down to reveal Charles’ icy expression. In afrustrated tone, he ordered, “Sit in the passenger seat.”

I’ve just been lectured in public. Why would I want to sit next to him to get lectured again? Despite herannoyance, Whitney endured Charles’ icy gaze and sat in the passenger seat before she fastened herseatbelt.

True enough, Charles wasn’t happy, so he wanted to give her an earful.

However, he couldn’t bring himself to do it when he saw how aggrieved she looked with her head hunglow.

“How was your first day at work?” he asked.

Whitney bit her lip and replied softly, “It was okay. I’m not used to the heavy workload, but I think I canmanage it after a couple of days.”

Amused, Charles couldn’t help pinching her cheek. “It seems like you have good adaptability skills. Why did you avoid me deliberately when I went there just now?”

“Have you forgotten about the terms of our secret marriage? You said we would keep our relationship asecret in public. Besides, I didn’t even know I was working in your company. Naturally, I was going topretend that I didn’t know you.”

Whitney felt even more aggrieved and was on the verge of tearing up. “Furthermore, I don’t know muchabout your temper. Wouldn’t you be harsher on me if I were to say that I knew you very well?”

Charles was rendered speechless. Why does it sound like I was in the wrong?
