The Failed Rejection -
Chapter 49
Penelope pov
Penelope was in the pack infirmary waiting for Luka to arrive. She had been pacing the hallways as she was a bundle of nerves. Penelope contacted Svetlana first with her request, but Svetlana told her the amount of magic Penelope would need sadly she didn’t have. Svetlana went ahead and got ahold of Luka for her. Thankfully, Luka agreed to help out.
Penelope looked in on Chris from time to time and to be honest he looked more deranged every time she talked to him. The doctors finally had to sedate him until Killian decided what to do with him. Killian had hoped the witches would be able to help the human. Penelope continued to pace back and forth when she felt them. Their strong auras, Penelope looked up and saw them.
Luka and Killian walked down the hallway talking in low tones. Luka approached with a kind look on his face. Penelope still couldn’t believe that this man was five hundred years old. The man didn’t look a day over thirty, if that.
“Wizard doesn’t hold a candle to our mate,” Koko whispered in her head and Penelope agreed.
“So I hear someone needs a few new memories?” Luka asked. Penelope nodded,
“Yeah,” Penelope quickly explained what had happened from the beginning in case Luka had to go back to the beginning of the semester.
“Okay, so you were going to replace out what happened to him on this trip?“ Luka asked.
“Yeah,” Penelope agreed.
“How about I erase all of the memories and then implant a memory of you going to a morgue to identify a body of this Max fellow. Let me see him,” Luka stated and Penelope was confused. Luka went to touch her temple.
“Just think of him and then I shall be able to see him in your mind,” Luka clarified. Penelope allowed Luka to touch her and thought back to when she met Max. Then she felt odd.
“Don’t fight me Penelope I’m just looking for your memories of this man,” Luka told her in her mind. Penelope let her grip on her memories go and felt Luka specifically search through her memories just for Max. Luka wasn’t invading her mind, simply looking for information. Then the last few days seem to play like a movie for him. Luka played over and over the point where Penelope, Chris, and Noah see Max shapeshift into a werewolf. Luka pulls out of her mind and Penelope looks at him. She sees the worry clear on his face. Penelope knew the situation was bad, but seeing this five hundred year old man who has seen so much worry cause fear to run down her spine.
“Things are about to get bad human,” Koko tells her.
“Okay, I’ll remove his memory of seeing his friend turn into a werewolf. What would you like me to turn it into?” Luka asked. Penelope thought for a minute.
“What do you think Killian?” Penelope looked to her alpha.
“I agree with Volkov’s original story, just adjust it slightly.” Killian stated backing up Luka.
“What’s that?” Penelope asked.
“Let’s say the guy had a drug problem, which is why was gone for the past several months… what is a popular human drug?” Killian asked. Penelope thought of a plausible story.
“OxyContin, but when he couldn’t steal anymore from where he worked, Max switched to Meth,” Penelope decided that was reasonable. Penelope remembered from Chris that he worked as an EMT like her after getting out of the service. Luka made a sign of distaste at the mention of the human drugs but nodded his head. Luka went to go into the room.
“Wait, what about when you mess with his memories?” She asked Luka but, Killian answered.
“Chris is heavily sedated and when Chris is done we will move him back into his dorm and have him under close surveillance for a six months.” Penelope nodded, that didn’t seem to unreasonable. “One of my warriors will watch him for a week directly after as well, and we will check on his sporadically.”
“What do you think Luka?” Penelope asked.
“I think you have a smart Alpha, the werewolf council was very barbaric and archaic. Select humans are capable of knowing about our existence, clearly not your friend. However, that doesn’t mean they all are like Chris and humans don’t deserve to die for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.” Penelope nodded at Luka’s speech. She opened the door and her heart hurt to see her friend laying on the hospital bed completely unresponsive. Luka placed both sides of his hands on either temple and Penelope could feel the power start to radiate in the room.
“Do you think he is in pain?” Penelope asked Killian. Killian was about to answer but Luka answered before he could.
“This does cause a bit of pain, but these are clearly painful memories so it should only be a slight pinch. Chris is also still knocked out, if it was extremely painful then he would have woken up,” Luka explained to her while still working on the memory spell. Penelope felt a little bit better, but still felt uneasy. The magic in the air quickly retracted and Luka turned around.
“I’m done, he will wake probably in six hours. It’s probably best that you and him wake in his dorm. That’s the memory I implanted, that you returned to his dorm.” Penelope nodded, she knew it was time to go back to school in the next couple of days, she just didn’t want to go back now that she found her mate. It seemed now she didn’t have a choice.

Braxton pov
Braxton sat in the Luna’s office with his brothers and calling his parents to let his family back in Alaska what was going on. This family meeting was pretty typical, they normally had one bi-monthly, at least before his first mate passed away. This was not going to be a fun phone call, his mother was not going to like what he and Dash had to say. Denali dialed the alpha office phone number.
“Hello?” His brother Cam picked up after a couple of rings.
“Hey little bear,” Brax greeted his brother. His as brothers gave him a side glance at the nickname but he ignored it.
“Braxton? Oh Godess! Is everyone okay?” Cam asked.
“Yeah we are all fine,” Denali piped up.
“Cam are mom and dad with you?” He asked.
“No, I’ll go get them,” there was a brief pause. “Don’t hang up.” Then we heard stomping and Cam screaming “mom,” and “dad.” Denali started laughing and the rest of the brothers couldn’t help but join in. Soon enough they heard stomping feet,
“They are on the way, let me get you on the speaker phone,” Cam said and then there was the sound of several buttons being pressed. “Okay I got it.”
“Boys! My babies are you there?” Their mothers voice came through the phone.
“We are here mom,” Dash spoke up.
“Oh it’s good to hear from you,” his fathers voice came through the speaker phone.
“It’s good to hear from you as well,” Dakota piped in.
“Report?” Their father asked and Braxton nodded at Denali.
“A success, we stopped the auction, but now have a bigger problem,” Denali started but trailed off.
“What?” His father asked impatiently.
“We found five cubs, they have no idea who their parents are. If you can look into it that would be appreciated,” Brax told his parents.
“I’ll start looking into it immediately,” Cam stated.
“How old are they?” His father asked.
“When are you coming home?” His mother asked.
“I’d guess, maybe four or five,” Dakota stated, he spent quite a lot of time with the cubs as he had a little one with his mate.
“When are you coming home?” His mother asked again. They all looked to Braxton, waiting for the alpha to answer.
“Well, I can’t speak for the others, but Dash and I are staying,” Braxton stated firmly. “At least for now.” Everyone stared at the two brothers and the line was silent.
“Why?” Denali asked.
“Well for one I found my second chance mate,” Braxton stated.
“I’m assuming it’s that wolf,” his father stated through the phone.
“Yes sir.”
“That doesn’t explain why your brother is staying.” Everyone looked at Dash,
“I feel like I found my purpose here.” Dash told everyone vaguely, Denali seemed to recover first.
“Did you replace your mate here?” Dash looked around the room,
“No, but I feel like I have a better chance replace her here than I do in Alaska.” Braxton let everyone absorb that and Braxton knew better than anyone what Dash felt. The whole family was happily mated except for Dash. While none of his brothers had any children yet, it was still painful to watch all of the happy mated couples frolicking around the packlands.
“Dash I don’t like this,” their mother told their brother.
“We can’t tell them the truth, not now,” Braxton told him in the mindlink.
“I know momma, but I truly think this is what the Goddess has in store for me,” Dash told the room. The conversation switched to when the other boys would be coming home and if they had heard from his mates. They talked to their parents for an hour before the phone hung up.
“Dash, why are you staying here really?” Denali was the sharpest of all the brothers.
“Not now Denali, you need to decide for yourself if you are staying or going,” Braxton stated. Brax could see the indecision clear on his face, but he simply nodded and walked out of the room with his brothers.
It was only Brax and his brother left in the room when Dash turned on him with a growl.
“How dare you mindlink me that?” Dash asked him. Brax was taken aback by the ferocity in his brothers gaze, his brother has always been the quiet and reserved one. It wasn’t so at this moment, his bear was in his eyes ready to attack his alpha.
“Dash you are going against your alpha,” Braxton stated trying to soothe his brother, but his brother didn’t calm at all.
“Callum is my alpha and king,” Dash stated simply, Braxton was surprised by this information.
“And I just became his uncle, think how upset he’d be if you’d kill me,” Braxton stated rationally and that seemed to do the trick as Dash calmed down instantly.
“I’m sorry B I don’t know what came over my bear,” Dash said sheepishly.
“It’s okay, I’m glad you are serious about protecting this young alpha,” Brax stated. Dash gave him an odd look,
“He is so much more than an alpha Braxton,” his brother told him and walked away.
Braxton sighed heavily and went looking for his mate who he found in their room packing a small bag.
“What’s going on?” He asked Penelope a little hurt.
“I have to go back to school LB, you know that.”
