As we strolled down the sidewalk towards the hospital, we were stunned at the condition of the city.
Hundreds of buildings had been decimated or damaged to the point that they were condemned.
Police and military vehicles were patrolling nearly every city block. People had returned to the city in droves and were undoubtedly shocked by what they saw.
“I didn’t know it was gonna be this bad,” I stated with sadness.
“None of us did,” Sky replied softly.
“If the people didn’t hate me before, they’re really gonna hate me now.”
“It’ll be okay,” she said as she squeezed my hand. “You’ll see.”
People were walking around looking at their ruined homes. Children looked lost next to their parents as they rummaged through some of the rubble.
We eventually reached the hospital, the only building that seemed to be unaffected by the devastation.
We walked into the hospital entrance, and I could see about thirty people in the waiting room with various injuries.
The devastation is terrible.
“Stay here,” I said as I let go of Sky’s hand. “I’ve gotta put on the other suit.”
“Are you kidding,” she whispered. “Right now?”
“No,” I replied as I leaned in closer. “In the bathroom.”
“Why?”
“Because I was the other guy when I dropped him off.”
“Oh. Okay,” Sky said as she finally got what I was saying.
“I’ll wait right here then.”
I found an empty stall in the bathroom and transformed into The Guardian Host.
I glanced down at my chest, and that’s when I saw the new symbol that the Superior Council bestowed upon me.
I finally got a superhero symbol!
It looked like an upside-down triangle with the bottom line missing from it. Near the point of the triangle, there was a circle inside of it.
They made an X in the triangle at the bottom of the two lines that formed the point. A line ran down the center of the triangle to the middle of the X near the bottom of it.
There was a horizontal line that ran slightly above where the center of the X was.
It looked odd, but I liked it.
I teleported to the middle of the waiting room and hoped for the best. I walked over to the check-in desk, and when the nurse behind the desk saw me, she had a look of shock on her face.
I look intimidating.
“I’m here to reclaim the body of a government agent I dropped off with a doctor the other night.”
“Okay,” she said with an expression of fear. “Let me get someone who can help you.”
She turned and jogged down the hallway behind her, going through a doorway to her left.
The next thing I knew, I heard people clapping and cheering behind me.
I turned around, and the entire hospital waiting room was standing on their feet. They were walking towards me slowly as they clapped and cheered.
Some of them were crying as they noticed me standing there. Sky was clapping and cheering with them.
She paused to mouth the words, “I told you so.”
Before I knew it, the news crews were there, and I was standing outside the hospital surrounded by hundreds of people who loved me.
I didn’t see the nurse come back. I was too overwhelmed to notice if she returned. I was an immediate media sensation.
I reclaimed Jack after all the excitement settled down a few hours later.
I even gave an interview telling the people of Pine Beach City that I was their guardian and would never let anything like this happen again.
I was enjoying being a true superhero for the first time.
Sky and I decided to go to the Pine Beach City Dance Club for the victory celebration a few days later and let off some steam by dancing the night away.
We arrived at the club and walked in after paying the donation fee. I must’ve been walking too fast when we walked in because I turned around, and Sky was several steps behind me.
“Slow down,” she yelled in frustration.
I stopped to let her catch up.
“Sorry, I can’t help it.”
“Let’s go to the DJ booth,” I said as I grasped her hand and led her across the dance floor.
We saw a man with his back to us as we reached the DJ booth. He was in a dark suit, like what the Umbra Agents wear.
He was bending over slightly, and his head was moving up and down to the beat of the song that was playing.
He turned around when I tapped him on the shoulder.
His mouth was so full of food that some fell onto the floor.
“Good God, Jack,” Sky yelled over the music.
“You’ll never get a woman eating like an animal.”
It was Jack, and he was stuffing his face with the complimentary buffet provided by the museum.
His left arm was in a sling, and his face had several cuts and bruises.
I’m glad to have him back, even though he’s a messy eater.
“What,” he asked as he tried to suck some of his drink into his mouth through a straw.
“Are you seriously eating again,” I asked as I laughed. “We just had dinner.”
“You’re such a pig,” Sky stated with a laugh.
After he finally finished what he had in his mouth, he replied.
“Relax, you two,” He said as he put down his plate and cup.
“I know how to get a woman. I have moves that drive the ladies crazy. Check this out.”
He turned around and said something to the DJ, and the music stopped.
All the people on the dance floor glanced in his direction with dissatisfaction. Suddenly, one of his favorite dance songs started playing, and the crowd was satisfied.
He danced awkwardly near the center of the dance floor as Sky and I laughed at the horrendous dancing that he was doing.
I had to admit, I was glad to have him with us.
Had he not been wearing that bulletproof vest, he would’ve died.
"Vincent, is that how humans dance?”
"Hell no,” I answered with a chuckle.
”That’s how Jack dances.”
We danced the night away, leaving behind the devastation of the city.
After the club started to die down, we decided to call it a night.
As we were walking out of the club, I heard Volax.
”Vincent, I was contacted by Pyruviox. Something has happened with Dryservious.”
