The Heart Sees -
Chapter 2
"Another challenge?" I growled.
"I'm sorry Alpha but after your.... after what happened people wonder if you really are a capable leader" my beta sighed.
"Just because I'm blind doesn't mean I'm incapable!" I snapped at him.
"I know, and it's a shame that you have to keep proving that you're a great leader. If people were smart they wouldn't dare challenge you for your title" my beta bowed slightly.
"You're a really great friend. I'm glad you were with me through everything and called me out of my pity party" I said sincerely.
"We both know that Martha would kill me if I didn't look out for you after everything" my beta said sadly.
"I know... I appreciate your loyalty. It will never be forgotten and neither will your sacrifice" I nodded at him thoughtfully.
"Thank you Alpha" he bowed slightly.
"You know you don't have to call me that when we're alone right?" I teased.
"Yeah, but you have a powerful title, may as well use it" he chuckled "besides, I don't want to be on your wolf's bad side".
"What time is the challenge?" I sighed.
"The challenger has asked for high noon" my beta replied.
"Very well... have everything arranged. Afterwards I am going to go out and check the patrols" I explained.
"Sounds good, I'll go with you" he offered.
"You know I can handle it" I argued, raising an eyebrow at him.
"I know I just could really use a run" he replied and I could hear the smirk on his face.
"Alright then, I'll meet you down shortly for the challenge" I said and I heard a 'yes alpha' before the door closed.
I leaned against my desk, rubbing my temples lightly to ease my headache. 'Are you ready for another fight?' I asked my wolf Braxton, aka Brax.
'I'm always ready for a fight! I'll show all of these losers how powerful we are, sightless or not!' He growled in response.
'Thank you' I replied.
'You know I'm not going anywhere, we're in this together. Ready to add some more battle scars to our collection?' He joked.
'You know we don't get those anymore' I chuckled back.
'Yeah but we have a lot of them....'he grumbled angrilly.
'Let's go down there and kick some butt!' I said, trying to distract him.
'Thought you'd never ask' Brax growled happily.
I closed my custom laptop and started heading downstairs. "Good morning!" I heard my sister squeal happily and I opened my arms to brace for the bear hug I usually get. She leapt into my arms and I gave hugged her back, "where are you going? Lunch is gonna be ready soon" she asked.
"I have a challenge" I grumbled as she released me from the hug.
"I wish those dummies would stop that nonsense. Everyone knows you're the strongest fighter" I could hear her eyes roll, but also sense she was worried about me.
"I'll be fine... I'll see you after for lunch?" I asked.
"Okay fine.... just come back without blood dripping everywhere" she scolded me.
"Okay" I chuckled as I walked out of the front door. I made my way over to the battle field confidently, feeling a wave of submission from several wolves... except one, who I assume is the challenger. I walked over until I was only a few feet away from the challenger. I could smell who it was and frowned. I guess it was to be expected that one of the younger warriors would challenge me.
"Ready?" I heard my beta ask and I nodded.
"Begin!" He shouted and I started walking in a circle, going clockwise. I heard a footstep and knew the attacker was coming from my left. I quickly dodged out of the way. I heard more movement, running this time. I knew he would try and leap on my back, which was turned to him, so I waited until he was right there and then bent over, flinging him over my back and onto the ground.
I heard a crack, followed by a growl before there was more movement. I heard him shifting into his wolf so I did the same, letting Brax free. Brax let out a loud growl full of power. I heard the paws on the ground to my right and knew what the next attack was. I waited until they were right in front of me, leaping out of the way and snapping my jaws onto their neck as they went to fly past me.
I kept my grip firm, bringing my front paws up to pin the man down. "Submit" Brax roared through the mind link. I felt him struggle for a bit longer before I felt the wolf shifting back. I kept the human form pinned until I heard him whimper, "I submit". I got off of him and stood up, feeling a pair of pants hit against my chest. I quickly slipped them on. "Let this be a lesson! Don't underestimate your alpha. I can still keep this pack safe and that is what I intend to do" I shouted and felt a wave of submission hit me... this time with no resistance.
Satisfied, I started walking back to the house, treading over the familiar ground. "That was awesome! You finished him off so quickly" my beta cheered as he handed me a shirt. I heard his arm moving so I took the shirt from him and slipped it on, hiding the multiple scars that I knew littered my back.
"All in a days work" I replied with a smirk as we went inside. I smelled bacon and eggs, "breakfast for lunch? It smells delicious" I said out loud and heard my sister's voice.
"Just for you brother, to celebrate your victory" I heard my sister chuckle at me.
Before I knew it we had finished lunch. "When are you going to replace a luna?" I heard my sister ask and I froze. "I know after Martha... but-"
I cut her off, "I'm going to go check the patrols" I said as I stood up, heading outside. I took off my clothes and tucked them behind a tree before shifting. 'She knows not to ask that. I don't know what's gotten into her lately' I complained to Brax as we started running to the border fence.
'Probably because she is thinking about replaceing a mate again' Brax grumbled sadly as we kept running.
'I know it's been three years but she was our mate....' I sighed.
'It doesn't mean we can't choose a mate if we wanted. After all we are a desirable alpha' Brax said proudly.
'But who would want to deal with a blind mate?' I replied. Brax simply huffed at me as we got to the border.
"Welcome Alpha" I heard one of the warriors greet me.
"Thank you, I've come to inspect the border patrols" I mind linked the warrior.
"Of course Alpha, right this way" I heard the warrior say and I followed the sound of his footsteps in the snow.
"Alpha! Alpha!" I heard another warrior yelling so I turned my head in that direction. "A rogue has been spotted on the other side of the fence!" He added.
"How many?" I growled through the mind link.
"Only one Alpha, we're not sure if it's a male or female, I didn't go close enough to check" the warrior panted.
"Lead me to the area" I demanded through the mind link and heard the sound of paws running on the ground.
'What is a rogue doing in our territory?' Brax asked me.
'I don't know.. but we'll replace out. There could be more on the way' I answered as Brax kept running behind the warrior.
