The Heir to the Alpha -
Chapter 20
Scarlett
He started to punch the wall once again, I put my hand on his shoulder, but he continued the movement, and the crack in the wall widened with the impact of his hand.
"Christopher!" I called him by name, but he ignored it. "Christopher!" I called again, but he ignored me again. As if he was in a trance. "Alpha!" Now he turned his face towards me and I finally managed to break him out of the trance he was in.
My hands pulled his and I looked at the injuries on his knuckles, I saw the open cuts, the blood oozing out, and probably some injury to his hand, if I had been in the hospital I would have done an x-ray because he had possibly broken a metacarpal.
"Christopher, what are you doing?" I asked, trying to understand what he had just done, and only then did my gaze go up to his face and I saw him crying.
Christopher was crying.
The fucking Alpha was crying.
"I can't." He said simply as another tear fell from his eyes. "I can't lose everything again."
There I understood his despair, there I saw the fear he felt, he had lost a mate and a son, and now the threats to our son or daughter threatened to make him lose everything again.
"I can't lose another child and another mate, I couldn't bear it." He said sighing loudly, the words came out choked, full of pain and feeling.
"Mate?" The word escaped my lips and his blue, now reddish eyes held mine.
"I know I said I thought you were my second chance mate, but the truth, Scarlett, is that I was always sure." His hand went to my face and he tucked a strand behind my ear. "I knew the same moment I saw you in the ballroom, wearing a navy blue dress, your hair was tied up, and you were with Brisa and who I now know is your sister." Now he smiled and then his expression became serious again. "I had felt alive again, for the first time in years, but you have no idea how I felt when I saw that you had found your mate at the Ball. The hardest thing I've ever said was wishing you both love ." I was completely in shock at what I was hearing. Christopher now rested his hip on the wall he had just cracked with his fist as he continued speaking. "I felt my heart shatter, piece by piece when I saw you leaving the room behind him, there I was sure I wouldn't have another mate, that it was you and I had lost you right there. I tried to get you out of my head, in fact I didn't even know your name at the time, nor that you were a Byron, I just didn't go after you because I thought you would be happy with your mate, what the Moon chose for you, and the feeling I had in my chest didn't make sense. Because I felt something for you. Why the Moon chose someone else for you? I tried to forget you, and I simply thought I was going to have a heart attack when I was waiting to be treated at the hospital and the doctor was the girl I loved." Now he smiled, one of those wide, genuine smiles of his. "But I still felt like it was just fate showing me what I lost, I thought it was just a coincidence, and that everything I felt was my mind playing tricks on me. Until I saw you, lying on the floor, in despair because the idiot had betrayed you, the mate that the Moon chose for you treated you that way, for a second I was angry at Her choice, how could she have let you suffer like that?" He said shaking his head. "But I remembered that I wasn't going out that night, I was at home on the balcony of my room, looking at the moon, which was still full, when something told me I needed to go out, as if it were calling me, I went to the Tyler's and I found you there. I swear I didn't know what was going to happen, I thought it was too good to be true, but everything with you is so natural, so easy, so simple. I've loved you since I first saw you, Scarlett, but I was willing not to stand in your way of seeing you happy." Now his eyes raised again, hearing all that was so intense and so true at the same time, with him everything was so real, so simple, so natural. I felt as if we knew each other from other lives, and I always wondered how it seemed so quick and natural with him, even more so than with my own moon-destined mate.
"I feel that way too," I confessed to him, and that made his gaze intensify, his blue eyes locked onto mine, it was as if he was trying to read me inside, trying to replace answers within me, and then he furrowed his eyebrows before opening a smile.
"Do you feel that way too?" He asked, and I had no doubt, I knew, I knew he was my second chance, I not only knew it, I was sure, I felt it inside my bones.
"Yes, it was more natural for me to stay with you, than with my first mate," I said sighing. "I just don't understand why, why would the Moon do that? Why would she let me go through that with Mathew, only to then take me to you?"
Christopher exhaled as he held me by the arms.
"I don't know either, but sometimes the Moon acts in mysterious ways, sometimes we don't know how to explain exactly what it wants at the moment, but everything is part of a bigger plan," Christopher said and at the same moment I pulled his hand to get a better look at the wound, but now it looked like just a scratch. "I just know I couldn't bear to lose you..." He confessed while I was still looking at his hand, which I was holding.
"You won't lose me, we will always be here, with you," I said pulling his hand, to my belly.
Christopher took a breath and smiled amid the touch of his hand on my belly, a tear escaped, which formed in the corner of his eyes, then he used his other hand to wipe his face.
"I love you, Scarlett." He confessed, wrapping his free hand around my neck.
"I love you too, Christopher." I also said before crashing my lips onto his.
We recovered after all that, and Christopher went to the triad office, announced our arrival, and we went directly to the apartment. It was much smaller than Christopher's room, but it was enough for us, there was a small pantry, a bedroom, a sofa, and a small dining table. As much as we were on the Council, he didn't trust Joshua in the same place as us, our guards stayed in other apartments, but they took turns at our door.
Christopher went out to get our dinner, and we ate inside the apartment, I was tired from the trip, and after dinner, I just took a shower and fell asleep in his arms.
My mate, my second chance mate.
There I felt like I could dominate the world alongside him, and I knew that given the way things were going, maybe that was exactly what we needed to do.
