Chapter 52

Running up to the pack house I could see that there was about 10 vampires currently fighting against the pack. Most of the pack had shifted and a few stayed human so they could help with weapons. It was a smart move, and I was proud of them. Both Beta’s were fighting together with one human and one as a wolf taking on two vampires on their own. I saw a few others I knew in both forms and they were doing great. I was thankful they had gotten the elders, females who aren’t ready to fight, and children into the safe housing.

My hackles rose and it’s like I could feel this other presence somewhere close by but I couldn’t see them. I asked blue and she didn’t have any clue. She mentioned she felt some kind of bad energy around the vampires so it was maybe a witch using her powers to help them somehow.

I mind linked Andrew, ‘did they mention witches came with the vampires? Do the witches come out and fight with the vampires? Do they hide in the shadows and use their magic to help the vampires or to hurt us enough that the vamps can take us out easier?’

He replied, ‘always in the shadows. If we can take out the witch then the vampire’s strength will cut in half and we could easily take them out.’

Blue nodded and she opened a mind link to all our mates telling them that they needed to search the woods. They, of course, argued that we didn’t need to go but we silenced them saying that we are the princess and we are more powerful than they were. Felt kind of like rubbing it in their faces but they need to learn that we would never back down from a fight. We broke off in teams of two to search the woods.

I linked Sandra and the betas to let them know our plan. They agreed and told us to be careful. They also would keep their eyes out and let us know if they see anything that could be helpful. We head in a random direction sniffing our way around because none of us knew where the witches would be hiding or how many were here with the vampires.

I asked Alistair if the ones they were fighting were all the vampires since they had the most recent attacks and had two in a row. I was hoping they used the same battle planning so we could anticipate their moves when we took them on. Alistair replied that when they attacked his path they came in waves of five but since this was a bigger pack it’s probably in waves of 10 so there was a few more groups that we were going to have to go through. I started cussing and I forgot to turn off the mind link to my mates before I heard all of them laughing at me.

‘Damn girl! I didn’t even know you knew some of those words. Your like my naughty little sailor!’ Knox exclaimed laughing at me. Such a butthole. I told him to shut it and get to work. This was serious business now but later id be teaching him a lesson.

Running along with along with Asher beside me I could smell something dead and the closer I got to it the worse it smelt. It was like rotten death like roadkill the had satin the sun for days rotting and heating up. Blue kept snorting and shaking her nose to get the smell out but nothing worked.

I barked at Asher before linking him. ‘Asher do you smell this? Is there a deer out here that’s been sitting dead for a while?’ I hadn’t hunted in these woods just yet but I know they last few weeks a few have went out on trips to get us some meat stored up.

‘No. I think that’s how witches smell but I’ve never came across one. We’ve had a few attacks for vampires we’ve never come across the witch that’s with them.’ He linked before putting his nose to the air and taking a big sniff.

‘Okay well you mind link the guys and I’m going to start sniffing around a little more. I’ll focus on just the scent so we can get closer and you let the guys know to come to where we are. Make sure they know to be quiet and to go slow.’ He agreed and linked them.

I walked forward slowly before coming across a noise like chanting. I laid down on my stomach and crawled up a hill to see over it. There were two witches chanting sitting beside the fire with a dead rabbit in front of them and a few dead squirrels around them in a circle. This was dark magic and it made my body feel dirty like a film of sludge covered every inch of my skin.

‘Guys…. I found them and it is disgusting. There are two here. I have no clue if there are more but these two need put down now. So locate my smell and crawl slowly to me when you get close. I am working on a plan.’ They all agreed with me before heading my way.

‘Jared.’ I linked him. I had a few questions about my powers hoping I could use them to take out the witches and end this battle.

Before he responded I heard a sad, loud howl of pain and I knew someone had died. Blue wanted to howl in return to show respect, but we couldn’t give up our hiding spot. I told her later we would make up for it but for now we couldn’t. She cried and curled her body up waiting for our mates.

The chanting changed. Before it was slow and calculated but now it was frantic and angry. I couldn’t wait for my mates nor could I wait for Jared to respond. I knew they were all fighting and I couldn’t distract them. It was time to take them out and I would have to do it alone.

I crawled as close as I could before I noticed they were listening for sounds. I stopped and waited until their focus shifted before running to pounce on the louder witch. I grabbed onto her throat with my teeth and ripped it out. The second witch opened her eyes still chanting and pushed herself up into a defensive position. I felt a pain start in my stomach and I knew this witch b***h was causing it. I growled and lunged. She tried to move out of the way but I was still able to latch onto her calf. I ripped the muscle off the bone and with the pain it caused she stopped chanting so she could focus on our fight and stopping herself from bleeding out.

When she looked down at her leg to see what I had done to it I jumped on her for the last time and broke her neck with my teeth. I didn’t enjoy killing but its part of being a predator with a family to protect.
