CHAPTER 2

LYLA’S P.O.V: PRESENT TIME

As I grew older, I made sure to keep the news of my shifting to myself. I pretended to be a runt without a wolf and it didn’t work because if anything, Alexis got more upset that a runt without a wolf was a threat to her Luna position.

I took everything she dealt me with stride because I knew that I would be leaving the pack soon. I made plans to run away after I turned eighteen and no one but my friends knew.

Alexis‘ paranoia seemed to also manifest physically because she did everything to make sure she looked like me- or at least, a prettier version. She dyed her hair into a bleach blond color and always caked her face with makeup. One day I caught her stuffing her bra and she punched me in a last minute attempt to keep me quiet.

When she shifted, she made sure to do it in front of me every chance she got to remind me that I didn’t have a wolf. Her wolf is a dull brown color and it’s rather small. Each time she shifted I always laughed to myself because my wolf was bigger and prettier. Mine was an off white color with sharp amber eyes and it was just a little smaller than Derek’s.

I was riding my bike home from the grocery store when a familiar car parked directly in front of me blocking my view of the sidewalk. I clamped down my annoyance and tried to maneuver my way around the car but Derek got out and held my bike handles in one hand making it impossible for me to ride away.

“Leave me alone Derek, please,” I crossed my arms over my chest. in a show of nonchalance, “I have to get home and make dinner.”

“That’s great; I’ll go with you.” He picked all my grocery bags in one hand and dropped them inside his car, “I’ll drive them home; you can go ahead.”

I knew I couldn’t make a scene in public so I just rode my bike home while my anger brewed beneath the surface. How dare he appear in front of me like this after

taking Alexis on a public date just yesterday? He knows what he’s doing and I think. he enjoys it.

CHAPTER 2

The ride to my house was short and Derek arrived soon after me. As soon as he parked, I walked over to the driver’s side and grabbed all my groceries. I tried to slam the door in his face but he stopped it with one hand and pushed it back. forcefully, making me almost fall.

“That wasn’t very nice,” he clicked his tongue, “How would dear daddy feel if he knew you were being mean to your future Alpha.”

“Don’t you dare talk about my parents?” my voice held enough venom to kill but he just laughed. My parents died in a rogue attack when I was a little girl and it was still a sore spot for me. Derek knew that and he made sure to use it against me every chance he got.

I wiped away my tears furiously as I arranged my groceries on the counter.

“What do you want Derek?” I finally asked. The faster he tells me what he wants, the faster he can get out of my house.

“The mating ball is in a week,” he began, “I wanted to remind you that you’re not going.”

My friends- Rachel and Anastasia had told me about it earlier. They were gushing about how the members of the royal family were going to be in attendance and Rachel especially gushed over the prince. I couldn’t care less about it though.

I had no plans of going in the first place but I wouldn’t tell him that, “I never said I wasn’t going.”

“You have a mate; there’s no reason for you to be there.”

“You have a mate as well but that doesn’t stop you from fucking Alexis and showing her off like some designer bag.”

“I don’t care about Alexis, baby,” he moved closer to me and I took quick steps backwards, “You’re a lot prettier, I’m sure you fuck better and your wolf is so much prettier.”

Right now, I’m regretting letting him know that I could shift.

He reached for my face but I slapped his hand away, “Don’t you dare touch me.”

He frowned at my words and his nice guy façade dropped in a second, “You are

not going for that ball and that is final.”

“You don’t own me Derek; I’m going and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

“I am your future Alpha and your mate.”

“You are NOT my mate. If you were, you would act like it.” We were raising our voices now but I knew no one would hear us. My house is isolated from the rest of the pack. “If you were my mate then you wouldn’t be with Alexis.”

“I am your mate.” He growled, “And you will do what I say.”

“Do you know what I don’t understand? I don’t understand why you won’t just reject me.” he didn’t respond to me, “Are you scared? Do you not know how to do it? Are you being a wuss Derek? Is that why you won’t reject me?”

“I don’t have to do anything; I can have both you and Alexis if I want.”

“You’re just a spoiled little rich boy and you disgust me. Act like a man for once in your life and reject me.”

“You bitch,” he snarled and I didn’t see his hand until it was too late. I braced myself for the impact but instead he hit the wall next to my head.

I opened my eyes to see him breathing heavily. He pulled his hand away and I saw a dent left where he had punched the walls and it hit me. He almost punched me, and he would have; there would have been no one to stop him from doing it.

“Get out,” I found my voice finally and his eyes snapped to me in disbelief.

“You’ve got to be kidding me. I didn’t fucking hit you.”

“You would have,” he didn’t deny it, “Get out of my house.”

“You’re fucking delusional,” he scoffed as he grabbed his keys, “You’re not going

for the ball.”

I waited until he was in his car before I shouted, “Watch me,” and slammed the

door shut.
