The Lycan Series -
Bullied By The Lycan King Chapter 28
Violet's POV
I paced in the room Hilda had brought me for two days now. She regularly came to bring me food but that was it.
I wasn't allowed out. The room was kept under lock and key. Now I was beginning to lose my mind.
Axel wanted me to work on the mansion. Why then was Hilda keeping me here? Did Axel change his mind yet again?
I began chewing my fingers again as I moved around the room restlessly. I couldn't keep living like this.
I had to be out there so I could replace a way to free my parents or at least be certain that they were fine. Hiding me here wasn't going to sort anything at all.
The sound of keys kissing one another at the door pulled my attention to it and I stopped pacing. Seconds later, the door opened and Hilda stepped in. "Can I go out now? Has he changed his mind?" I rushed at her.
She paused at the door with a cloud of confusion plastered on her face. Then like a flicker of light had turned on in her light, the confusion faded and she left the door. She walked to the small bed at the corner of the room and sat down. "It wasn't the king who asked me to keep you in here," she breathed.
I dropped my fingers from my mouth and moved closer to her. "What do you mean!?"
I was on the verge of losing my mind but I held back. So far so good, she has been good to me. She must have had a good reason to keep me in here and all I had to do was stay patient enough to hear it.
"You are safer in here than out there. Two days ago it was Hera's death. Who knows what they'll do next?" She shrugged her shoulders and returned her strong gaze to the door.
Her words were like a bunch of complicated terms I couldn't comprehend. I moved to the edge of the bed and sat down, so I could hear her clearly.
"I didn't get... I don't understand..."
She let out a sigh and looked at me. "Haven't you noticed?"
I looked at myself in shock as I tried to understand what it was that I was meant to notice.
"No one likes you in this mansion or even the slave quarters! Some people want you to be punished and maybe killed. I don't actually blame them but I don't agree with them either," she said, and understanding flooded over me immediately. The werewolves hated me for what my parents did to them and some of their families. The human slaves saw me as a time bomb that could go off at any moment.
"Mother always said there would be one who could tame the king as crazy as it sounds, I feel like you are that person..." Hilda added and my troubled eyes turned to her once again.
"What?" My voice was barely audible. I cleared my throat and asked again. "What do you mean?"
She gave me a small smile and placed her fingers above mine. "My point is, I am helping you because I think you are the King's mate. It's crazy to explain but... I have strong reasons to believe it's you."
My eyes pierced deep into hers, hoping she would laugh and tell me all she was spitting were a joke but her gaze remained as strong as ever.
I turned away from her and tried to think of what she had just said. I knew what the term mate meant for werewolves.
It was like the perfect better half each of them was supposed to have. But I was human and he was... A special sort of wolf. I couldn't be his mate.
I pulled my hand from under hers and held them to myself. "I appreciate you, Hilda. I really do, but I can't survive here for much longer either. If you keep hiding me here," I paused and looked at her face. "I will go crazy."
She took in a long breath and got on her feet. "Actually, that's why I am here," she breathed and my lungs constricted with the tension her words brought.
"From tomorrow you will be working as the King's chamber maid. He wants to keep a close eye on you," she said.
To me, it sounded normal but the hint of sadness in her voice made my heart shift.
"Should I be worried about this assignment?" I asked her, hoping and praying that she would actually answer.
The corners of her lips twitched like they didn't know if she should frown or smile.
"The king is very complicated but you have proven time and time again that you can handle yourself... Just stay alive."
With that, she started heading to the door and then paused as her fingers brushed the knob. "I am going to leave the door open, make sure you are early. He hates lateness."
Before I could ask where his chambers were, she slipped out of the door and I was left alone with my thoughts.
My fingers returned to my mouth and tried to understand why Axel would want me in his chamber... Her reason for wanting to keep me close was a good one but it brought a dull pain to my heart. It meant, he still didn't trust me. He felt I was a threat to his kingdom. That was it.
I rolled my eyes and fisted my hands. The only thing I wanted was for my parents to be set free and if he couldn't do that because of everything they did to him and his people-which I perfectly knew they deserved. They had done a lot of terrible things but they were my parents. I couldn't wish them evil.
I hoped he could at least move them out of that terrible dungeon. The smell alone could kill them.
I shrugged at the end of my thoughts. Maybe working in his chambers wasn't such a bad idea. I could gain his favor again like I did when we were kids, and maybe he would grant them a better cell.
I curled myself on the bed and I was almost drifting to sleep when a knock resonated on my door.
A frown covered my face as I glared at the door.
Who could it be?
I was pushing myself off the bed when the door opened and the widow stepped in with all her glory.
The frown on my face immediately deepened. "What do you want here?"
"Ouch, children!" She hissed. She walked to my bed and sat down making herself very comfortable.
"Didn't they lock you up for that crazy stunt you pulled off in the throne room the other day?" I was unable to hold the question in.
She threw her head back and let out a shrill laughter that sounded painful to the ears.
"Nobody can lock me up, darling. Not even your dear King," she said at the end of her laughter.
As I stared at her veiled face, I couldn't help but wonder who the hell she was. Her confidence level was scary. Everyone on every side of the world trembled at the mere mention of Axel's name, yet she said he couldn't lock her up.
Was she perhaps insane? If that was the case, then it explained a lot of things about her.
"By the way, that is no way to express your gratitude, Violet. I saved you down there," she said, turning her veiled head in my direction.
I scoffed and shook my head. "You wear a veil and I assume you are not blind in there. Look at me, I am locked up. How did you help again?"
Her long hand swiftly grabbed mine and her hold tightened coldly around my hand.
"Don't be ungrateful! You are alive and that's all that matters!" She hissed, her sweet honey-like voice turning into vipers at once.
I pulled my hand out of her reach at once and got to my feet. "Who are you?"
She let the echo of my voice settle from the air before she replied.
"Who I am doesn't matter right now. What does matter, is what I want..."
"What the hell do you want?" I spat out suddenly feeling a strange aura filling up the room.
She moved her long-clothed arm in the air like she was about to start one of those weird theatricals she pulled off at the throne room before she rested them on her lap.
"I want the king dead and I want you to help me."
I heard her but for a second my head was almost certain I didn't hear her correctly because who in their right mind would try to kill a king as powerful as Axel? Surely she was crazy. There was no doubt about it nope.
"I know what you are thinking. But before you object think about your parents, he doesn't have as many restraints around them as he has for you. He will kill them." She got on her feet and held the tips of her fingers together. "I am offering you a chance to get back what your parents lost. A new revolution."
