The Lycan Series -
The Lycan King’s Breeder Chapter 39
Greg's POV
The leaves crunched under my feet as I walked along the unpaved road. Staring up ahead, I could see the clouds darkening as the sun set, birds flying in the sky like they had not a single worry. I let out a loud sigh, wishing I was a bird with no worries too.
We had only just arrived a few hours ago and we were already having meetings. We hadn't even been given time to rest. I couldn't deny that I was stressed. It wasn't like I didn't enjoy being Talon's Beta. It was a huge honour to be the Beta of the present king, but it was also a pain in the a*s to not have any time to rest. "Here it is." The voice of the female Beta drew me out of my thoughts.
I looked up at her and noticed the sheet of white paper she had clutched between her fingers as she held it expectedly towards me.
"The list of packs around the area that were attacked by rogues." She elaborated when she noticed the confusion on my face.
"Oh," I said. Only then did realisation set in on what she was talking about. I had been lost in my thoughts for so long that I had completely forgotten what she and I were here for.
I walked over and collected the sheet of paper from her, offering her a small smile in exchange.
"Most of them are outside our border, casualties differ though." She drawled. "It seems they're trying to weaken the defences of packs closest to Southern Ridge."
She didn't have to tell me, Talon and I already figured out all this. Desmond's main focus had been on the capital, right from the very start. Maybe he wanted the throne for himself.
Before I could respond to her though, the silence was suddenly broken by the soft music that indicated that I was getting a call. I pulled out the phone and was surprised to see Dawn's contact on my screen.
"I have to take this," I said, excusing myself. The Beta smiled and left the room to give me some privacy. Releasing a long breath, I finally answered the call.
"Took you long enough." Dawn's voice filtered out through the speaker immediately.
"What do you want, Dawn? You do know I'm busy at the moment?" I asked with an eye roll, even though I knew she couldn't see me.
"Not even a 'good evening Dawn' or a 'how are you doing, my sweet little sister?' Wow, Greg." She chastised. I could tell she was walking, by the huffs that came through her breath anytime she took a step. "Where are you?" I asked. "And how's Avalyn?"
"Funny how you asked about her and not your own sister by the way... she's all right now."
My ears perked up at the comment. "Was she not all right before?" I asked, wishing my sister would just tell me whatever it was she called me for and not joke around.
"Yeah well, she passed out not too long after you left with the Alpha. You had to see it, if I hadn't been there she would-"
"WHAT?!" I yelled over the phone, cutting off whatever Dawn had to say next. "She what?" I asked bewildered. Avalyn had passed out and she didn't bother to tell me sooner? Talon was going to be so pissed when he heard the news. "Calm down, she's fine now. Sheesh." Dawn joked, letting out a small chuckle.
I didn't know what she found funny about the situation. The King's breeder had passed out, and that was no news to be joked about.
"Well, what happened to her? Is she all right?" I hissed, already growing irritated at my little sister's games.
"She's all right, at least Lydia said she'd be fine..." She paused, before taking a long breath. "She's pregnant, Greg."
It took a minute for the news to fully sink in. I didn't even bother to respond to Dawn as I quickly hung up the call and shoved the cell phone back into my pants pocket. I had to inform Talon.
I left the area in search of my Alpha, it didn't take too long for me to replace him. He was currently standing at the entrance of the infirmary, engaging in a conversation with his cousin. His cousin excused us and I told him what happened and his expression changed. "We leave for home at first light. Get the guards to pack up our bags" He announced, already making his way toward the exit. "And for the moon goddess's sake, somebody replace my fucking sister!" He yelled.
In between the strong bout of frustration emitting from him, I could smell a little bit of excitement. Maybe he was happy about the news, I didn't expect him not to be. As Talon stormed out of the garden, I made my way in the opposite direction in search of Emily. Goddess.
Handling Talon and Dawn were stressful enough, adding Avalyn to that hadn't really been that bad. But Emily? I sighed. Could life be any more difficult for me?
I was dragged out of my thoughts as my sharp hearing picked up faint giggles and whispers coming from the door that I was sure to lead to the library. I opened the door and made my way through the entrance, shutting the door behind me.
As I walked further into the room, the giggles grew louder, there was something about the voice that felt familiar. Walking even further into the room I could make out small smooching sounds as well, my eyebrow raised in confusion as I tried to make out what I was hearing.
I reached the very end of the massive room and walked behind a tall bookshelf, only to be met by the sight of two people with tongues buried deep into each other's throats, currently engaged in a deep make-out session. I sighed in disappointment as I prepared to turn around and leave the place since neither of them had even noticed my presence. But then I was stopped dead in my tracks as recognition flickered through me at the scent of the girl currently straddling the boy to the chair. "Emily?" I called in surprise.
Immediately, she scrambled up to put on her top. I hadn't even realised she was shirtless. The boy underneath her froze in fear as he remained seated on the chair.
"What the fuck, Greg!" She yelled as she turned back to look at me. Her once black hair has been dyed blonde -something I was pretty sure Talon was going to be furious about- and a nose ring sat gracefully on the very much new piercing she'd had on her nose. "What do you think you're doing? Who's that boy?" I snapped, growling at the boy who'd now sat up and began buckling his belt.
"It's none of your fucking business," Emily replied nonchalantly.
"Have fun telling that to Talon," I said as I pushed passed her, walking straight to the boy who was now fully dressed. I didn't even give him time to react as I grabbed him by the neck and slammed his back against the wall. "You do know that you're messing around with your King's little sister, right?" I growled, my fangs extending as I glared daggers at him.
The boy whimpered and nodded his head frantically. I could see the tears at the corner of his eyes threatening to fall.
"Maybe you want to be dead so bad. You want to be ripped apart piece by piece, hmm?" I threatened, my claws digging into his neck. I felt blood trickle down his neck and onto his grey shirt, staining it crimson red. He yelled out in pain, struggling to get out of my hold.
"Let him go! Please Greg, just let him go!" I heard Emily yell from behind me but I paid her no mind.
"You're lucky you weren't caught in the act by Talon himself," I growled, dropping the boy to the ground. "Now get out of here!" I yelled at him.
He didn't have to be told twice, he scrambled to his feet and rushed out the door. Only when the door slammed shut did I turn back to Emily.
"Why the fuck did you do that for?" She snapped, glaring at me like she had any reason to be pissed.
"You're going to get yourself in big trouble one day. You're a princess, Emily!" I chastised sternly. "You think Talon would have wasted any time ending that boy's miserable life if he'd been the one to catch you both?"
She didn't answer.
I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose in an irritated manner. "He wants you to get packing. Get all your stuff because we're leaving at first light."
She stared at me like I was speaking a different language. "Uhm, no. I'm not leaving. He can't just come here and tell me what to do after sending me away to school abroad just to please his mate." She spat, irritating me even further.
I sighed in frustration. "Emily just do what he wan-"
"No!" She snapped, cutting me off. "Where is he? I'm going to give him a piece of my mind." She moved to walk past me but I quickly grabbed her upper arm, holding her in place.
Talon wasn't in a good mood, I couldn't even remember the last time I had seen him in a genuinely good mood. Emily going there to confront him would only bring about trouble, and I wasn't ready for it. I knew he would never hurt his sister, but that didn't mean he wouldn't hurt people around him if he was furious enough.
"Please just do what he says until we get back to Southern Ridge, I'm pleading with you," I said through gritted teeth. She stared at me for a moment but didn't continue to press on. I knew she wasn't going to let this go, but at least I'd stalled her for long enough. "Fine." She said. "But you should know that I'm not a little kid anymore, I'm eighteen." She bumped past me and headed straight for the door.
I released a long breath and shook my head. This girl was going to get herself into big trouble one day. The thought of her and Dawn finally reuniting brought chills down my spine, they were going to wreak havoc and I wasn't ready for it.
