The Medallion -
Chapter 1401 Accept The Test
Not far from the ruins, the old man with the medicine basket surfaced again and slowly took off his bamboo hat, revealing his wrinkled face. Even if Sabina and the other two women saw his current face, they might not be able to fully recognize him. However, once they knew his real identity, they would be utterly shocked but elated at the same time. This old man was the one who had sacrificed his own life just to defeat Wraith King Sebastian a while back-it was none other than Rocky.
At that moment, although he didn't show any visible expression on his face, it was rather hard for him to hide the surging emotions from the bottom of his heart. He didn't expect to meet the three women in a country that was so far away from the Holy Dragon Empire. After his short encounter with them, his memories about the past became vivid once again.
"I wonder what Marcia and Isis are doing right now? The last time I heard, Nigel has already taken over the throne despite his young age. It must have been very hard for Isis..." Rocky couldn't help but sigh deeply. Even though he decided to stay away from them, the yearning in his heart was still making him suffer every passing day. Right now, he was just an ordinary doctor who was traveling around. He was no longer the reincarnation of Divine King Belial, nor Prince Crimson, nor the savior of the Wild Spirit Land.
Being far away from all the people that he loved, he felt very lonely and alone. His strong desire of seeing his loved ones was actually killing him softly. But he clearly knew that this was the exact moment that he needed to be stronger. He had lost all of his power, meaning that he would just be a huge burden to everyone if he chose to be around them. Although, he was aware that even in his current state, Isis and the others would still accept him for who he was.
Thus, after a moment of hesitation, Rocky put on his bamboo hat again and went on with his journey. For now, he planned on going to another town or country.
However, just after he took a few steps, a roaring noise resounded from the depths of the earth. Thunders rumbled; violent winds lashed out; dark clouds began to gather, and bolts of lightning raged from the sky as if something ominous was about to ensue.
"No! Are the calamity beasts about to free themselves from their shackles again?" Rocky felt a chill down his spine as his face wore a serious expression.
Just as Rocky had suspected, about a few days later, the calamity beasts suddenly reappeared in the Wild Spirit Land and caused devastating chaos. It had just been through a bloody disaster and the lives of the people were yet to go back to normal. But this time, without Rocky and the Divine Spiritual Source to save them, the Wild Spirit Land was in such a perilous situation.
Because this matter was of great importance, the Holy Dragon Empire had to gather the representatives of all countries in the name of the united empires to discuss what their countermeasures would be. At the same time, they had also invited the representatives of the spiritual race clans, hoping that they could cooperate with the humans to vanquish their common foes-the calamity beasts.
Surprisingly, the discussion went smoothly. Almost all the clans of the spiritual race expressed their enthusiastic collaboration with the humans. However, since there was no Divine Spiritual Source, dealing with the calamity beasts would be extremely difficult-nay impossible.
Despite this dreadful challenge, in order to prevent the Wild Spirit Land from falling into grave danger again, the united empires and the spiritual race reached a consensus to exert their best efforts to fight against the calamity beasts. For the first time in history, this would be the first real cooperation between the two sides. This time, they would join hands as equals.
Soon enough, an army, which was comprised of hundreds of thousands of troops from various countries and about two thousand masters from the spiritual race, was formed. It was further divided into nine squads that would simultaneously fight against the calamity beasts in order to prevent them from causing further destruction in the Wild Spirit Land.
However, it was clear to all humans and the members of the spiritual race that it was just an ideal situation if they could really beat the calamity beasts. None of them could actually match them in terms of strength even if they combined their powers. But even so, they still chose to fight for the sake of their land and the future generation.
It was a losing battle that they had no other choice but to put their lives on the line.
Then, the time came to confront the calamity beasts. In the fierce battle, the joint army of humans and the spiritual race suffered heavy casualties on the get-go. Some groups were almost completely annihilated just within a month when the war began.
Obviously, the Wild Spirit Land was hanging by a thread. In just a short while, both humans and the spiritual race would face their extinction if a miracle didn't persist.
Meanwhile, in a town that had been recently destroyed by a calamity beast, Rocky was there, trying his best to help by healing the injured ones. However, there were countless casualties that it seemed like his tireless efforts were still negligible.
'What the hell is the Holy Lord doing at this time? All of the people are really going to die if nothing is done,' Rocky thought to himself as he looked around and saw all the injured people dying one after another. However, while Rocky was still wallowing in despair, a ray of golden light suddenly fell unto him. Then, time seemed to have stopped as all the people in his surroundings became motionless.
"At last, you finally showed up. Where is the Divine Spiritual Source?" Rocky asked without hesitation as he saw the golden light, recognizing that it was indeed the Holy Lord.
"Why? Are you planning to save this world again? But you have lost all your strength to be its savior. In fact, even if I did give you the Divine Spiritual Source, you can't do anything about the calamity beasts. It's just futile resistance, just like what the humans and the spiritual race are doing right now," the Holy Lord answered frankly.
"Yeah, I can't do it... but you can. You're omnipotent, aren't you?" Rocky said with a straight face.
"Don't be mistaken. My mission is to record the history of the world, not to interfere with it. Back then, I did the wrong thing. At the spur of the moment, I helped the Star Divine Race replace a way to prevent the world from collapsing. Consequently, the history of the Wild Spirit Land was drastically changed because of me. I don't intend to make the same mistake again," the Holy Lord said distantly.
"Then, it's all the more reason why you should get everything back on track and give the Divine Spiritual Source to the humans and the spiritual race. Am I wrong?" Rocky insisted.
"No. History will just repeat again." It was pretty evident from the voice of the Holy Lord that he had lost his confidence.
"Then, what's the point of everything I have done so far? I've sacrificed all that I had for nothing?!" Rocky shouted in exasperation.
"Every act has a corresponding consequence. You are able to survive because of the sacrifices you've done throughout your life. Well, if you want, I can send your soul back to the world that you originally came from. Would that make you feel better?" the Holy Lord asked.
"What? You can do that?" Rocky had to admit that he was quite stunned by what he heard. It was indeed intriguing and tempting. If he could return to where he was from, it meant that he could return to his original life. In his original world, there was no strife of this kind, and he didn't need to be a savior. He could just live a peaceful life, and at the end of the day, there was a warm bed that could comfort him.
"But there's no point in doing that... Even if I do go back, my heart will always yearn for the things that I will be leaving here," Rocky said with a bitter smile. He knew that his heart was already shackled into this world. At that time, he would rather stay in this damned world than return to the modern world, where he would feel like a total stranger.
The truth was he didn't regret sacrificing his life for the Wild Spirit Land one bit. But now that it was facing an inevitable demise again, he felt that everything he had done up to this point was meaningless. In the end, he still couldn't stop this world from perishing.
"Do you really want to save this world that much?" the Holy Lord suddenly asked after thinking for a moment.
"Honestly, I just want the people that I care to survive..." Rocky replied as he looked in the distance. He had been always true to himself. If he only had the power to save the world and sacrifice his life all over again, he would not hesitate to do it in a heartbeat.
"What if I tell you that I can help you regain the power to control the Divine Spiritual Source and even make you stronger than ever? Well, of course, I know what your answer will be. But you need to undergo a test first and pass it." The Holy Lord shed him some light of hope at the most crucial moment.
"What test are we talking about?" Rocky's facial expression immediately changed. His eyes lit up, like a blazing wave of flames that would consume anything that would block his way. With one last chance to save everything he had fought for, he was determined to do whatever it cost him.
